FRAMEWORK FOR STUDY

Scope and limitations:

I. The case is developed considering that Amanishah Nallah will be rejuvenated as per Tata Consultancy Services
proposal.
II. Thesis will not question the Tata consultancy proposal and it is assumed that the Environmental and ecological
concern has been taken care off.
III. The thesis will focus on study the edge conditions of the Amanishah Nallah and propose urban design solutions
and guidelines for development along waterfronts.
Aim:
Aim of thesis is to redefine the notion of public space by turning the city edges along Amanishah Nallah into important
social and environmental forecourts for urban development through urban design interventions . The thesis also aims
to find out answer to Question.
How can the water channels/watercourse be converted as a prime feature and focal area of urban development?
Objectives:
I. To study behaviour of city edges along Nallah and its immediate surrounding
II. To strengthen and reconnecting people with water edges.
III. To demonstrate design solution for selected site creating blueprints for future developments.
IV. To make design strategies and guidelines for development/redevelopment of city edges along Nallah or water
channel/watercourse.

CHANGING CITY EDGES ALONG WATER STREAM AND ITS IMMEDIATE SURROUNDINGS
1. Changing city edges along watercourses due to human interventions:
Physical interventions
• land fill
• encroachment
Degradation of Quality of water
• Dumping the Industrial waste
• Dumping of city waste
Resultant:
• Change in flood ways ( increase chances of disaster)
The floodway is the channel of a water channel or stream and the overbank areas that must remain
open to carry the deeper, faster moving water during a flood.
• Blocks natural water stream flow, increase chances of floods in city
• Becoming backyards for building and used as dumping yards to dispose of city waste
• Valuable lands of city along the Nallah due to smell remain unoccupied or became prone to
encroachments activity
• People settled in the beds of water stream became prone to disaster risk

WATER SYSTEM

The water bodies that form a major component

of the ward in terms of its area are also
important at the city level. While one is the
Ghazipur Drain, which is a city level drain, the
other is the Hindon Canal, which
originates from the Hindon River and flow
towards the Yamuna River The third water body
is the Ganga Water Channel, which is a fresh
water supply channel.
