WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A GREAT LEADER?

According to the speaker Roselinde Torres, who had evaluated leadership development
programs run by various corporates to understand the impact of such programs in grooming
the leaders to steer the organizations in to the dynamic future. She scavenged through
hundreds of cases of leadership failures at organizations which caused erosion of enterprise
value, despite of the organization’s readiness to culminate the leadership. Roselinde have
distilled her 25 years of research and outlined how great leaders have exhibited 3 distinctive
traits which are unique to very few visionaries;

1. Ability to anticipate the change while peeping in to the corners of the world through
people, travel, books, projects and take decisions to change the course of
organizations
2. Diversity of their network to draw diverse perspective on decisions and outcome
3. Courage to question the status quo and take unconventional approaches rather than
counting on legacy and past

According to the speaker, 21st century leadership is not all about leading the people from
the front, rather being bold, futuristic and diverse to create a larger impact and create
sustainable enterprise value.

According to me, aspiring leaders shall exhibit the following traits to manage the team
dynamics;

1. Shall communicate the vision and purpose of the organization effectively across the
organization to have a buy-in from the team in order to take-up the ownership
2. Should lead by example in demonstrating key organizational values and set the tone
for cultivating the desired organizational culture
3. Being accessible and trustworthy in order to respond to the people’s problems and
give them the confidence of being the reliable shoulder in tough times
4. Empower their teams with required skills, knowledge and resources in order to meet
their common goals
5. Entrust bigger responsibilities to create the playground for learning and leadership
development
6. Take charge of risk in case of failures and pass on the rewards to his team
7. Make sure that teams are accountable and responsible for the projects/tasks
assigned
8. Be a source of motivation and
9. Constantly monitor their progress and offer constructive feedback which shall cause
professional development for team members
10. Not to practice micromanagement which may team destroy team dynamics and also
dismays capacity building
11. Ability to foster creativity and innovation among team members to deliver strikingly
different products, services, processes and outcomes.
