COMEDIC HORROR

With plenty of memorable moments and characters, HANTU KAK

LIMAH BALIK RUMAH is an incredible joyride while it lasted but
suffers from a predictable ending.

A good comedy movies will make you want to laugh out loud. A good horror movie
will make you want to scream out your lungs. In both respect, HANTU KAK LIMAH
BALIK RUMAH will not disappoints. The horror scene is intense and the comedic
scene is, well, punchy. This movie is definitely a must watch Malay movie of the
year 2010. This horror / comedy movie is directed by Mamat Khalid whom is known
for his comedic prowess and if Hantu Kak Limah Balik Rumah is any indicator, he
still hasn’t lost his touch.

Hantu Kak Limah Balik Rumah is a sequel to Mamat’s own Zombi Kampung Pisang,
set in the same misfortune village in Perak, 3 years after the event of the zombie
outbreak in Kampung Pisang. This time around, it wasn’t zombie that terrorize the
poor denizen of Kampung Pisang, but the spirit of a deceased local called Kak Limah
(Delimawati).

The main plot of Hantu Kak Limah Balik Rumah revolve around the same
protagonist from Zombi Kampung Pisang, Husin (Awie) who just gotten back from
Singapore three years after he broke a wedding engagement with Cik Nin (Ummi
Nazeera). Husin resolve to take Cik Nin hand in marriage is however delayed with
the problem surrounding his dead neighbor, Kak Limah whom spirit causing panic in
Kampung Pisang.

The movie follows Husin and some other Kampung Pisang resident including village
chief Pak Abu (Zami Ismail), Husin’s close friend Abi Hurairah (Johan Raja Lawak)
and Usop (Syed) in their unsuccessful attempts to exorcises the soul of Kak Limah.
How the resident of Kampung Pisang interact with the ghost of Kak Limah and the
various exorcism attempts is definitely the standouts of the movie.

Other standout of the movie is definitely the character of Hantu Kak Limah Balik
Rumah themselves. All characters show genuine emotion; acting and reacting like a
human being normally would. There’s a slight exaggeration here and there, but you
can not but like the lovable citizen of Kampung Pisang. Syed who played the wheel-
chaired Usop and Delimawati who played Kak Limah, the ghost both played their
character perfectly.
But Hantu Kak Limah Balik Rumah is far from perfect. The sub-plot twist near the
end of the story is predictable and at some point, making some character behave in
a totally unrealistic behaviour; an unnecessary addition to a rather great main plot.
While the sub-plot twist is still acceptable, the main offender of the sin of simply
being unnecessary is the character called Ayu (Ava Vaanja). She doesn’t advances
the plot, only appearing about 4 times throughout the movie, and finally destroys
the ending. Is the ending suppose to be a cliffhanger or what? Well, that is for
Mamat Khalid to answer.

All in all, Hantu Kak Limah Balik Rumah is a very entertaining horror / comedy with a
great production value. Kampung Pisang resident charm and idiosyncrasies is
definitely the main course for this wonderful buffet of goodness; which makes it a
perfect ingredient for another sequel. Hantu Kak Limah Balik Rumah will be
premiering in cinemas this coming December 9, 2010. It’s a movie that can and
should be enjoyed for everyone even with it’s glaring flaws towards the end.
