Final Reflection Paper

I had the privilege of completing my internship at West Valley Medical Center in

Caldwell, Idaho. I've had ties with West Valley ever since I was a senior in high school. I took a

career class and we were assigned internships based on several different personality tests. I was

assigned to West Valley, but the timing was difficult. We had to go to our internship class during

our regular class times and it was only about an hour, so by the time I drove myself to the

hospital, I had very little time left. I wasn't able to do much because of timing and because I was

a junior volunteer so I was a little restricted on the things that I could and couldn't do. I decided

to return to West Valley to complete my internship because I have always loved the atmosphere

and the people there are great.

Upon returning to West Valley for my internship, I was able to do many more things.

Some of these things include: running labs to and from different buildings, assisting patients into

wheelchairs, and delivering newspapers. I am glad that I was able to have more interactions with

patients. I feel like I am a people person and having those connections and talks with patients

means a lot to me. When I started delivering newspapers, it was a bit intimidating for me because

although I am a people person I am still shy at the beginning and it takes me a little to warm up

to people. Because of my shyness delivering papers was a little difficult at first because I had to

know on patients’ doors and then go into their rooms. Sometimes I would stay with the patients a

few minutes and chat with them about their day or how long they have been at the hospital and

their experiences. Volunteering at the hospital has really humbled me and made me even more

grateful for my health.

Seeing the patients there being ill and not being able to do activities of daily living such

as walking or dressing themselves is really sad to see. I enjoyed talking to them because some of

the patients were very lonely and didn't have many people to talk to. I also learned that when

talking to older people you sometimes have to be louder than usual. This might be common

sense but I didn't grow up having grandparents or older people around. This was a new concept

that I had to adjust myself to. This internship did influence my future career choice because it

made me want to be in the healthcare field even more. I have always wanted to be in the

healthcare field and I was never really sure about what I wanted to do, but now I know that the

patient interaction is very valuable to me and that is something that I want to do in the future.

While I would do lab runs I sometimes watched people get their blood drawn and to me it was a

very neat experience. I enjoyed watching the phlebotomist make conversation with patients and

then draw their blood. I don't get squeamish over blood like a lot of people do, I actually enjoy

observing these kind of procedures.

I want people like myself to have a role in the healthcare system. I want to see more

doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and phlebotomists that look like me. I notice that a lot of times we

are underrepresented and I often stop and ask myself why this might be. Even while volunteering

at the hospital and working at the front desk there would be people who would ask me if I knew

Spanish and when I said yes they would get extremely happy and I was also very happy that I

was able to help them out by using my Spanish. I am grateful for this internship and the fact that

it did have a positive influence on my future career choice. I felt encouraged and inspired to

study and work hard to get to where I want to be and to live that American dream like my parents

once envisioned for myself.
