Position Paper - Violence Against Women
GRADE 11 – ABM 3
Violence against women is, collectively, violent acts that are primarily or exclusively
committed against women. It is also known s gender-based violence. This can also be said as
a part of gender inequality because this type of violence targets a specific group with the
victim’s gender as a primary motive. This type of violence are committed against women
expressly because they are women. The UN Declaration of the Elimination of Violence
Against Women states that “violence against women is a manifestation of historically
unequal power relations between men and women.” It also stated that “violence against
women is one of the crucial social mechanisms by which women are forced into a
subordinate position compared with men.”
Many people, including the writer of this position paper, have been wanting to stop
and recommend measures to prevent and eliminate violence against women. Many people
have also been wanting to eliminate gender inequality and once it has been eliminated,
violence against women being stopped is highly possible. Inversely, if violence against
women was stopped, then the country will be one step closer to gender equality. And having
gender equality will mean having less women hurt, physically and emotionally. The
stereotypes that men and women have will disappear and gender will mean nothing regarding
to status.
In conclusion, violence against women is something that not just one person or one
group can stop. For violence against women to be stopped, we all need to fight for it,
especially the women because they are the ones involved. They are the ones who gets hurt.
The pain of being hit is not the only one that hurts. Being degraded just because a person is a
woman brings more pain than being hit. And this is why violence against women should be
stopped.
