Intrinsic Elements of the short story “Little Red Riding Hood” by Charles Perrault

a. Theme

The theme of the short story “Little Red Riding Hood” is about deception and naive, as portrayed
by the wolf deviant behavior and the little girl’s character that is trusting too much

b. Character and Characterization

- The Girl (Little Red Riding Hood): The girl is the protagonist of the story. She is innocent and
naïve as she does not know the danger of talking to a stranger which leads to the conflict of the
story. She contributed the most to the story as she is the one carrying a basket of cake and butter
to be delivered to her grandmother, and upon her journey encountered with the wolf (which is the
main plot of this short story)

- The Wolf : The wolf is the antagonist of the story. The wolf is deceiving and cunning, and at the
same time is also violent, signified by his immediate intention to eat a little girl and also to
spontaneously eat her grandmother immediately. The wolf is the main cause of the conflict of this
short story with his intention to eat the little girl upon their first encounter.

-The Mother: The mother is a minor character but her role to the story is important because she
is the one who tell Little Red Riding Hood to go visit her grandmother in the first place.

-The Grandmother: The grandmother is also a minor character, and she is good hearted, trusting,
but also she’s old so she cannot clearly distinct who is knocking on her door. Her condition (being
sick) is also contributing to the story because it is also the reason why the mother asks Red Riding
Hood to visit her.

- The Woodcutters: A very minor character(s), their role to the story is only to appear as a
distraction so that the wolf did not eat the little girl upon meeting, but rather waited at the
grandmother’s house.
c. Plot :

- Orientation : Once upon a time there lived in a certain village a little country girl, the prettiest
creature who was ever seen. Her mother was excessively fond of her; and her grandmother doted
on her still more. This good woman had a little red riding hood made for her. It suited the girl so
extremely well that everybody called her Little Red Riding Hood.

- Conflict : One day her mother, having made some cakes, said to her, "Go, my dear, and see how
your grandmother is doing, for I hear she has been very ill. Take her a cake, and this little pot of
butter." Little Red Riding Hood set out immediately to go to her grandmother, who lived in
another village.

-Climax : As she was going through the wood, she met with a wolf, who had a very great mind to
eat her up, but he dared not, because of some woodcutters working nearby in the forest. He asked
her where she was going. The poor child, who did not know that it was dangerous to stay and talk
to a wolf, said to him, "I am going to see my grandmother and carry her a cake and a little pot of
butter from my mother."

-Anti Climax : . Little Red Riding Hood, hearing the big voice of the wolf, was at first afraid; but
believing her grandmother had a cold and was hoarse, answered, "It is your grandchild Little Red
Riding Hood, who has brought you a cake and a little pot of butter mother sends you." The wolf
cried out to her, softening his voice as much as he could, "Pull the bobbin, and the latch will go
up." Little Red Riding Hood pulled the bobbin, and the door opened. The wolf, seeing her come
in, said to her, hiding himself under the bedclothes, "Put the cake and the little pot of butter upon
the stool, and come get into bed with me." Little Red Riding Hood took off her clothes and got
into bed. She was greatly amazed to see how her grandmother looked in her nightclothes

-Ending : this wicked wolf fell upon Little Red Riding Hood, and ate her all up.

d. Setting
 Place:
- In the little red riding hood’s house, not mentioned but the fact that her mother just made a cake
signifies that they were at their home at that moment.

- In the woods, as mentioned in the line “As she was going through the wood”

- Grandmother’s House, as mentioned in the line “It was not long before the wolf arrived at the
old woman's house.”

 Time

In the afternoon, it is not mentioned explicitly but we can conclude that it is in the middle of
daylight from the line “and the little girl took a roundabout way, entertaining herself by gathering
nuts, running after butterflies, and gathering bouquets of little flowers”

 Atmosphere

Thrilling. Implied in the exchange between the wolf and the little red riding hood at the end of the
story, when the wolf is about to eat her.

e. Moral Value :

Children, especially attractive, well-mannered, innocent young girl should never dare to trust
complete stranger, or else there might be dire consequences.
