organization mentioned in the book and write about the work done by that
organization in environment protection.
The reason why I have selected this topic is I feel strongly about environment
protection. Not only I am a great lover of nature but also a lover of human
race. That means I am concerned about the dangers hovering over the
mankind and the environment viz. Global warming, pollution, species
extinction, deforestation, mangrove destruction etc. The more we exploit and
destroy our environment, the more ecological imbalance we create; ultimately
putting the very human existence at risk.
A reason for selecting BNHS as an organization is I have in the past visited one
of their exhibitions held in town. It was a well organized exhibit of
photographs, postcards of various flora and fauna. Some rare specimens were
also kept there. I was amazed by their collection.
2) Objectives:-
The Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) since its inception in 1883 has
been involved in the study of flora and fauna of the Indian subcontinent. What
started as just a monthly meeting of eight naturalists to exchange notes,
exhibit interesting specimens and otherwise encourage each other in the field
of natural history in 1883 has slowly become one of the finest collections of
natural history in Asia. Currently the BNHS collection is one of the finest
natural history collections in Asia having 1, 20,000 faunal specimens. The logo
of BNHS is inspired from the great hornbill named William.
Main Functions
Wildlife Publications
Our forests remove carbon dioxide and other pollutants from the air we
breathe and also cool our air temperatures, reducing the formation of ground-
level ozone, a pollutant that can cause heart and lung problems to worsen; our
wetlands store storm water and recharge our aquifers (where most of us get
our drinking water) with these filtered waters; and the dune systems on our
beaches form natural barriers to storm waves and provide important habitat
and travel ways for wildlife.
Take for example: The recent case of Aarey tree cutting. Mumbai's Aarey
Colony is a green belt in suburban Goregaon that has more than five lakh trees
and is home to a wide variety of bird and animal species as well as 27 tribal
villages. The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) cut down 2,141
trees in Aarey Colony hours before the Supreme Court ordered a stay on
further cutting till its next hearing on October 21. The top court's ruling came
after the Maharashtra government said it had already cut down the trees it
needed to for its plan to clear 33 hectares of Aarey land for the construction of
a Metro car shed and depot. This was done hours later after the Bombay High
Court cancelled four petitions seeking to declare the area a forest. This
resulted in precious part of ecosystem being lost to greedy needs of the
mankind.
Environmental Conservation is important because when we protect the
environment, we are not protecting some distant entity but ourselves. Right to
Life and Right against Exploitation are Fundamental Rights of all organisms
dwelling on Earth. A clean environment is essential for healthy living. The
biggest reason of all to save environment is because we are part of the
environment. We are not some separate entity to it, what affects the
environment affects us all.
We live in the environment and the environment sustains us. We are the
environment!
5) Review of Literature:
Hypotheses
In recent years, there has been a sustained focus on the role played by the
higher judiciary in devising and monitoring the implementation of measures
for pollution control, conservation of forests and wildlife protection. Many of
these judicial interventions have been triggered by the persistent incoherence
in policy-making as well as the lack of capacity-building amongst the executive
agencies. Devices such as Public Interest Litigation (PIL) have been prominently
relied upon to tackle environmental problems.
It can be assessed by the above discussion that the very existence of NGOs and
the role played by them in the protection of the environment is not only
important but also necessary because no government alone with any amount
of laws and acts can achieve the objectives of environment protection without
individual and public participation which can be achieved only through a
network of motivated and dedicated voluntary organizations, like the NGOs.
The hypothesis thus stands true.
SUGGESTIONS
Empower the NGOs to educate the students about the pollution problem
and the harmful effects of pollution.
Minimising the use of plastic for different purposes.
To support the NGOs financially which are rendering service to the Health
and Environment Sector
7) Analysis:
The well-known 'Purple Frog', the first Indian Canopy Frog and the first Asian
Leaf Folding Frog are exhibited at BNHS.
The IBA program in India was first launched in BNHS.
Conducted the ecological and behavioural study of the critically endangered
'Forest Owlet'.
Conducted research on the dramatic loss of vultures in India and Siberian
Cranes.
BNHS organized the conservation and education campaign for the 'Great
Indian Bustard'.
