PROJECT TOPIC: Study the role of any one national / international

organization mentioned in the book and write about the work done by that
organization in environment protection.

1) Selection of the topic:-

I have selected BNHS as an organization working in the area of environment

conservation. The Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS), a pan-India wildlife
research organization, has been promoting the cause of nature conservation
since 1883. Its headquarter is in Mumbai and has one regional centre at
Wetland Research and Training Centre, near Chilika Lake, Odisha. The BNHS
specializes in the conservation of nature and natural resources as well as
organizing education activities and exploration of natural history. Interesting
specimens are exhibited in the Bombay Natural History Museum (BNHS).
Naturalists, ornithologists and other qualified scientists within the country and
all over the world, make visits to this museum in order to conduct their
researches and observations.

The reason why I have selected this topic is I feel strongly about environment
protection. Not only I am a great lover of nature but also a lover of human
race. That means I am concerned about the dangers hovering over the
mankind and the environment viz. Global warming, pollution, species
extinction, deforestation, mangrove destruction etc. The more we exploit and
destroy our environment, the more ecological imbalance we create; ultimately
putting the very human existence at risk.

Every species is dependent on other species for survival, be it directly or

indirectly. Human beings are the ones who depend on maximum number of
species for their survival and their other needs. Any threat to ecology means a
direct threat to human race. Man induced natural disaster, will lead to
ecological imbalance and environmental degradation for which we cannot
forgive ourselves.

A reason for selecting BNHS as an organization is I have in the past visited one
of their exhibitions held in town. It was a well organized exhibit of
photographs, postcards of various flora and fauna. Some rare specimens were
also kept there. I was amazed by their collection.
2) Objectives:-

 To understand the importance of environment protection

 To study the role of agencies involved in environment conservation
 To sensitize people towards protection of plant and animal species

3) Awareness about the topic:-

Environmental protection can be defined as the prevention of unwanted

changes to ecosystems and their constituent parts. The objective of protection
is to ensure the maintenance of a stock of renewable resources that is being
exploited for human purposes.

The Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) since its inception in 1883 has
been involved in the study of flora and fauna of the Indian subcontinent. What
started as just a monthly meeting of eight naturalists to exchange notes,
exhibit interesting specimens and otherwise encourage each other in the field
of natural history in 1883 has slowly become one of the finest collections of
natural history in Asia. Currently the BNHS collection is one of the finest
natural history collections in Asia having 1, 20,000 faunal specimens. The logo
of BNHS is inspired from the great hornbill named William.

Main Functions

BNHS works closely with its stakeholders (government, academia, corporate,

research institutes and general public) to continue its conservation mission.
Some of its major functions are given below:

Natural History Collection

Conduct research on various species and habitats

Conservation of seascapes and landscapes

Provide information related to the environment to researchers, academicians,

scientists, etc.

Wildlife Publications

Extensive awareness programs through education, Communication

Cooperate with international agencies on various conservations projects and

issues
4) Relevance of the topic:-

In recent decades, many environmental problems have increased as the result

of human activities and unplanned management of the technological
development those which interfere ecosystems. It is critical to protect the
environment so as to reduce the destruction of eco-systems. Air and water
pollution, global warming, smog, acid rain, deforestation, wildfires are just few
of the environmental issues that we are facing right now. It is everyone’s
responsibility to take care of the environment to make this planet a wonderful
place to live and also ensuring we leave a healthy planet for the next
generation.

Our forests remove carbon dioxide and other pollutants from the air we
breathe and also cool our air temperatures, reducing the formation of ground-
level ozone, a pollutant that can cause heart and lung problems to worsen; our
wetlands store storm water and recharge our aquifers (where most of us get
our drinking water) with these filtered waters; and the dune systems on our
beaches form natural barriers to storm waves and provide important habitat
and travel ways for wildlife.

Environmental protection should be implemented due to warm climate

changes and floods which heighten the risks of spread out pests and vector
diseases. Some infectious diseases such as malaria, dengue, cholera and
encephalitis can also spread out rapidly throughout the whole area by
mosquitoes, flies and other insects those usually adapt to live in warm weather
region.

Take for example: The recent case of Aarey tree cutting. Mumbai's Aarey
Colony is a green belt in suburban Goregaon that has more than five lakh trees
and is home to a wide variety of bird and animal species as well as 27 tribal
villages. The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) cut down 2,141
trees in Aarey Colony hours before the Supreme Court ordered a stay on
further cutting till its next hearing on October 21. The top court's ruling came
after the Maharashtra government said it had already cut down the trees it
needed to for its plan to clear 33 hectares of Aarey land for the construction of
a Metro car shed and depot. This was done hours later after the Bombay High
Court cancelled four petitions seeking to declare the area a forest. This
resulted in precious part of ecosystem being lost to greedy needs of the
mankind.
Environmental Conservation is important because when we protect the
environment, we are not protecting some distant entity but ourselves. Right to
Life and Right against Exploitation are Fundamental Rights of all organisms
dwelling on Earth. A clean environment is essential for healthy living. The
biggest reason of all to save environment is because we are part of the
environment. We are not some separate entity to it, what affects the
environment affects us all.

We live in the environment and the environment sustains us. We are the
environment!
5) Review of Literature:

A literature review is a text of a scholarly paper. Literature reviews provide you

with a handy guide to a particular topic. If you have limited time to conduct
research, literature reviews can give you an overview or act as a stepping
stone.

A study on Non-Governmental Organization’s (NGO’s) in Protecting The

Environment- Dr Prakash Vaibhav

Hypotheses

NGOs have played an active role in the protection of environment in India.

These NGOs have been successful in protecting the environment to a great
extent, which has resulted in better environmental management in the past
few decades.

NGO’s have a very important role in protection of environment through social

services. The NGO’s from past five decades have witnessed the difficult
problems encountered in providing health care services to our poor people;
spread the awareness to public protection of wildlife, forest, human right,
Women and Children etc.

“A non-governmental organization (NGO’s) is any non-profit, voluntary

citizens’ groups which are organized on a local, national or international level.
NGOs perform a variety of service and humanitarian functions, bring citizens
concerns to the government, advocate and monitor policies and encourage
political participation through provisions of information. Some are organized
around specific issues, such as human rights, environment or health.

Environmental Law and Policy in India: Cases, Materials, and Statutes

published by Tripathi Publishers have been referred to understand the role of
the NGOs vis-à-vis the judiciary in environmental protection. Environmental
Law published by Eastern Book Company to comprehend the nature of work
done by the NGOs.

In recent years, there has been a sustained focus on the role played by the
higher judiciary in devising and monitoring the implementation of measures
for pollution control, conservation of forests and wildlife protection. Many of
these judicial interventions have been triggered by the persistent incoherence
in policy-making as well as the lack of capacity-building amongst the executive
agencies. Devices such as Public Interest Litigation (PIL) have been prominently
relied upon to tackle environmental problems.

It can be assessed by the above discussion that the very existence of NGOs and
the role played by them in the protection of the environment is not only
important but also necessary because no government alone with any amount
of laws and acts can achieve the objectives of environment protection without
individual and public participation which can be achieved only through a
network of motivated and dedicated voluntary organizations, like the NGOs.
The hypothesis thus stands true.

SUGGESTIONS

Some suggestions that can be made towards protection of environment could

be made in the following areas where NGOs could play an effective role with
the assistance of the governmental agencies for achieving the ultimate goal of
healthy and blissful environment:

 Empower the NGOs to educate the students about the pollution problem
and the harmful effects of pollution.
 Minimising the use of plastic for different purposes.

 To support the NGOs financially which are rendering service to the Health
and Environment Sector

 To support the initiatives taken by central and state government in

protecting our environment.
6) Methodology data collection:

Data collection is defined as the “process of gathering and measuring

information on variables of interest, in an established systematic fashion that
enables one to answer queries, stated research questions, test hypotheses,
and evaluate outcomes.”

Some of the most common data collection techniques include open-ended

surveys and questionnaires, interviews, focus groups, observation, case
studies, and so on.

In this project I have used direct observation (visit to a exhibition conducted by

the organization) and case study method in the form of a research article
mentioned in the previous topic.

7) Analysis:

BNHS as an organisation has done commendable work in the field of

environment conservation, protection of wildlife. BNHS is a chief point of
attraction for all tourists who ensure to visit all the sections of the museum
and the various galleries as well. More than 30 countries are active members
of this organization. This organization also publishes a quarterly journal known
as 'The Journal of the Bombay Natural History Society" and a quarterly
magazine called 'Hornbill". Today, nature enthusiasts from around the globe
present and hand in rare specimens to the society. BNHS also received
International Awards for its commitment to nature. Truly an organisation for
nature lovers.

Trivia And Achievements

 The well-known 'Purple Frog', the first Indian Canopy Frog and the first Asian
Leaf Folding Frog are exhibited at BNHS.
 The IBA program in India was first launched in BNHS.
 Conducted the ecological and behavioural study of the critically endangered
'Forest Owlet'.
 Conducted research on the dramatic loss of vultures in India and Siberian
Cranes.
 BNHS organized the conservation and education campaign for the 'Great
Indian Bustard'.
8) Conclusion

As discussed earlier environment protection is the need of the hour of

everyone living on the planet earth. In our busy lives, we need organizations
like BNHS to achieve this objective and thereby help the mankind and prevent
them from destroying the ecological habitat. If it weren’t for such NGO’s then
our world would be a concrete jungle and soon planet Earth would be wiped
out completely. So in order to live longer, save the environment. And
Remember don’t wait for others to take action, start from yourself.
