3. Product Description The ARRI EB 400/575 is part of an optimized lighting system along with all ARRI 400
W and 575 W luminaires specified for operation with the EB (see fig.1 , page 8).
It is suitable for both professional indoor and outdoor use (IP 21 protection).
The Electronic Ballast EB 400/575 meets the European Council Directive 89/336/EEC
of electromagnetic compatibility. The limits of EN 50081-1 are fulfilled.

Compared to magnetic ballasts there are a number of advantages when operating

daylight-lamps with ARRI Electronic Ballasts:
• Flicker free light
• No synchronization of cameras necessary
• Typical lightripple max. 3 %
• Light intensity increased by at least 5 %
• Constant lamp power
• Constant color temperature
• Constant light quality
• Control of electric power of the lamp between 50...100% of nominal lamp power.
• Variation in power supply voltage of 10% has no influence on the power of the lamp
(see also "Technical Data" for limits, on page 6).
• Variation in power supply frequency of 10% has no influence on the power of the
lamp
• Operating life time of the lamp increased by at least 20%
• Substantially less volume and weight compared to magnetic ballasts
• The ballast is built-in to a casing with type of protection IP 21.

4. Start-up procedure All operating controls and cable connections are arranged on the front panel
(see fig. 2, page 9).
4.1 Energizing System
• Check mains switch to be in "O"-position.
• Connect the properly checked daylight luminaire with head to ballast cable to the
corresponding connector of the electronic ballast
• Connect the electronic ballast to the power supply source.
• Set mains switch to "I"-position. The green LED "POWER" is lit, when the ballasts is
supplied with line voltage.
If lamp does not strike check if the switch at the lamp head is switched on.
• Check earth protection. If correct, the green LED "PE" illuminates if the ballast is
switched on.. If not, disconnect EB from mains (pull out line plug) and check power
supply and socket.
• The yellow LED "LAMP" on front plate is lit after successful ignition.
• The red LED "TEMP" indicates that the ballast cuts off due to overtemperature. After
cooling down, the ballast restrikes the lamp automatically. The LED "TEMP" stays lit
to indicate a temperature problem. To reset the LED the ballast must be disconnected
from mains (pull out line plug or switch off mains switch) for at least 15 seconds.
• The LED "REMOTE" is designated for ballasts with remote control and has no
function with this model.

6. Trouble Shooting 6.1 Does supply voltage correspond with ballast required voltage? Dual voltage
Guide ballasts are autoswitching.
6.2. Ensure ballast wattage matches lamp power!
6.3 Ensure correct lamp is fitted!
6.4 Re-energizing system:
Ensure main switch is in "O" position.
Set mains switch to "I". - WAIT-
After approx. 2 seconds lamp should ignite.
6.5 If lamp does not strike, the safety circuit may be broken - check if lens door is fully
shut and the lens safety switch is activated.
6.6 Is there a good power supply to the ballast?
6.7 If a ballast / head to ballast cable / luminaire does not work then all three units
should be considered faulty.
Do not try a suspected luminaire with another ballast - you may end up with two faulty
ballasts!
To check if a ballast is good, run it with a known good luminaire and known good head
to ballast cable.
6.8 If a ballast cuts out after running a few minutes there are a number of possible
failures:
l The lamp itself may be faulty or at the end of its life.
l The thermal cut-out in the ballast may have activated (Red LED "TEMP" on front
plate is lit) due to extreme ambient temperature or exposure to direct sunlight in hot
summer conditions. After cooling down, the ballast will restrike the lamp
automatically. The LED "TEMP" stays lit to indicate a temperature problem. To reset
the LED the ballast must be disconnected from mains (pull out line plug or switch off
mains switch) for at least 15 seconds.
l The ventilation might be restricted. In such a case the ballast can be used after it had
cooled down and the condition causing the overheating is removed.
l If the power supply exceeds the limits or has spikes or drop-outs the ballast switches
off to protect itself. If running on a generator the output should be regulated between
95 - 125V / 185 - 245V.
l If a ballast has cut off due to a momentary supply drop-out switch the ballast "OFF"
and "ON" again. The ballast should start up as normal.
l Earth leakage of luminaires or head to ballast cables will also cause the protection
circuit to be activated. Test the ballast with a known good luminaire. If cables are
suspect, they should be exchanged with known good cables.
If a ballast is found to be faulty ideally it should be returned together with the luminaire
and head to ballast cable to the ARRI-service location for examination.

LICHTTECHNIK Measuring Instruction EB 400/575

M1 Pre-Checks
A first examination of the EB can already take place at the closed device. For that purpose the
EB is attached only to a voltage supply (insulating transformer).
Without connecting a lamp head the following tests are executed:

M1.1. Check the internal voltage supply

Mains voltage approx. 230 V. After switching the power switch to on " power " lights up to
and, with protective ground connected, " PE " also lights up. About one second later the
charge relay closes audible.

M1.2. Checking the safety loops

Warning! The electronic ballast does not operate separated from mains, i.e. all contacts of
the sockets can be connected to mains.

M1.2.1 At the 575 W-socket insert a bridge from pin A to E.

Switching of relays is to be heard from the inside of the device.
Remove bridge.

M1.2.2 At the 400 W-socket insert a bridge from pin D to F.

Switching of relays is to be heard from the inside of the device.
Remove bridge.

M1.3. Check of the output voltages

M1.3.1 575 W: Bridge as under M1.2.1. For the measurement of the lamp voltage connect
AC-Voltmeter to pins D and C. After inserting the bridge resp. after
switching on of the device a square wave voltage of 370 Vrms, 200 cycles
per second, will appear between D and C for approximately 3 seconds. For
the measurement of the ignition voltage connect AC-Voltmeter to D and F
of the socket. A load of approx. 1500 ohms / 10 W connected in parallel is
necessary (e.g. incandescent lamp 230 V 40 W). After inserting the bridge
resp. after switching on of the device a square wave voltage of 200 Vrms,
200 cycles per second, will appear between D and F for approximately 0.7
seconds.
M1.3.2 400 W: Bridge as under M1.2.2. Measurement of the lamp voltage between B and
E. Proceedings and values are the same as in M1.3.1. This socket does not
output ignition voltage.

Essentially three values of the lamp voltage are to be expected:

1. U = 370 V: This value corresponds to the normal output voltage. The electronic ballast can
have been disturbed by a defective light or by a defective cable. Lamp head
and cables have to be replaced by previously checked equipment.

2. U = 180 V: Due to missing half waves of the lamp voltage, possible defect in the output
bridge or the LF control. With 180 V at least one power switch in the output
bridge has failed.

3. U = 0 V : Faults possible within different areas.

LICHTTECHNIK Measuring Instruction EB 400/575

M2 Opening the device

M2.1 Opening the device
The electronic ballast consists of an upper and a lower housing shell, either fitted with a
printed circuit board together with a heat sink. The housing shells are linked by the front and
back plate.
To open the device remove the upper two screws of the front plate attachment (see page 11),
after that remove all four screws of the back plate. When removing the back plate unplug the
fan from it's connector on the HF/LF-Converter Board as well as the protective ground plug
on the back plate.
If the device is equipped with a remote control, then the appropriate printed circuit boards are
installed on the back plate. The ribbon cable connection is to be taken off from the plug on the
HF/LF-Converter Board.
After this, as shown on page 11, the upper housing shell can be lifted somewhat and turned
around to be stored beside the lower housing shell. The cables between the shell halves are to
be led across the edges without mechanical stress. First measurements can be executed
already in this way.

M2.2 Disassembling the printed circuit boards

For further dismantling detach the heat sink of the HF/LF-Converter Board from the housing
shell. For this the two screws at the exterior of the housing shell must be removed. Heat sink
and HF/LF-Converter Board form a unit. After loosening of protective grounds from the heat
sink and from the protective ground distributor the upper housing shell can be taken off
towards the ballast's rear side.
The heat sink in the lower housing part forms a unit with the Base Board. To detach the
housing, at first remove the two lower screws of the front plate. The connections from the
front plate to the Base Board and to the protective ground distributor are left in their place.
Then the heat sink of the Base Board has to be detached from the housing shell. For this the
two screws at the exterior of the housing shell must be removed. After loosening of its
protective ground from the protective ground distributor the lower housing shell can be taken
off towards the ballast's rear side.

M2.3 Closing of the device

The closing the electronic ballast takes place in reverse order. The cables are to be laid as
found. It is to be noted that the components installed on the printed circuit boards of the upper
and lower housing shells are fitting into each other.
Doing the rear wall assembly, prevent protective ground and fan cables from coming into the

M3 Examination of the power semiconductors

For examination first the power semiconductors T1 to T8 as well as the diodes D1 and D2
(see page A3.0 and A4.0) are to be checked. The check takes place with a digital multimeter
set to "diode measurement" range. In this range the semiconductors can be measured in-
circuit.

The values measured between Drain (D) and Source (S) of the MOSFET-Transistors T1 - T4
(STH15NB50FI, STW20NB50 with isolating foil) as well as between Collector (K) and
Emitter (E) of the IGBT-Transistors T5 - T8 (IRG4BC40S) result in the following:

Transistor not damaged: Approx. 400 mV in one direction,

" OL " in reverse direction.

Transistor damaged: Short-circuit (2-3 mV) or

G D S " OL " in both directions.
G K E

The values measured between Anode (A) and Cathode (K) of the diodes D1 and D2
(STTA3006PI or RURG3060 with isolating foil) result in the following:

Diode not damaged: approx. 400 mV in a direction,

" OL " in reverse direction.

Diode damaged: Short-circuit (2-3 mV) or

K A " OL " in both directions.

It goes without saying, that multimeters of different manufacturers are apt for this test. The
correct Ohm-value then has to be evaluated by measuring a FET or IGBT which works
properly.

Since the transistors T1 and T2 as well as T3 and T4 are connected in parallel, it is

recommended to replace these two transistors always in pairs. With replacing transistors also
their Gate-Resistors and the Zenerdiodes of the gate circuit have to be replaced.
Base Board:
Transistor T1 T2
Resistor R16 R20
Diode D15 D16

HF/LF-Converter Board
Transistor T3 T4 T5 T6 T7 T8
Resistor R16 R20 R18 R2 R15 R4
Diode D15 D16 D4 D5 D3 D6

Replacing a defective diode a STTA 3006 PI may not be replaced by a RURG 3060. A
defective RURG 3060 can be replaced however by a STTA 3006 PI.

M4.3.3 Check of HF-Converter and current control

Additionally connect pin C and D at the 575 W-socket, monitor current in the
short circuit C - D on the oscilloscope by means of a current probe.
Connect variable isolating transformer to the ballast's mains input, set the
transformer output to 0 V, switch on the ballast's Main Circuit Breaker.

Measure the DC voltage across C1 with voltmeter: Connect voltmeter ground to

heat sink of IC 5, measure voltage at Cathode of D 8 (page A3.0).
Slowly increase output voltage of the transformer: Output current is shaped
rectangular and rises to approximately 15 A with 100 V at C1.

At 100 V at C1 remove Jumper

1ms
J 1 from the control board: The
DIV
ballast does not switch off.
Increase transformer output
voltage, until voltage at C 1 10 A
reaches 350 V: The current DIV
rises up to approx. 18 A.

Set the transformer output to 0 V.

M4.3.4 Check of the Active Line Filter

The Active Line Filter is located on the Base Board.
Remove short-circuit between pin C and D at the 575 W-socket.
Oscilloscope: Connect ground to M 1, connect probe to that pin of Jumper J 8
which is pointing to the Control Board (page A4.0).
J 8 must not be bridged during this measurement!
Slowly increase output voltage of the transformer: From 80 to 100 V at C1 gate
drive pulses appear:

5µs
Rated value of the switching DIV
frequency: 45 kHz ± 2 kHz,
can be adjusted with P 2 on the
5V
Control Board.

M4.3.5 Adjustment of output power

Connect a 575 W light head, check input current and lamp current with current probe and
oscilloscope.
Further measure voltage at C1. Dependent on the mains input voltage the voltage at C1 takes
two different values, which are to be adjusted as follows: switch on the electronic ballast with
100 V input voltage and adjust the voltage at C 1 to approx. 266 V with P 1 on the Control
Board (page A1.0).
Set Dimmer to "max" position and adjust the lamp power to 575 W ±5 W with P 5 on the
Control Board.
Note that the measurement of lamp voltage and current can be taken only with RMS
voltmeters with sufficient frequency response.
Set Dimmer to "min" position, the lamp power should be in the range of 270 to 305 W.
Check the input current for sinusoidal shape.
Set the input voltage to 230 V. With P 3 on the Control Board adjust the voltage at C 1 that
power output at "max." position results in the same value, as in the case of 100 V input
voltage.
The voltage at C 1 should not exceed 375 V, otherwise the adjustment procedure must be
executed again. In that case start with 260 V at C 1 at 100 V input voltage and repeat
adjustment.

Turn Dimmer to "min" position, check that indicator "Lamp" on the front plate is still lit.

Check switching point of voltage regulation at C 1: With input voltage at 150V ± 10 V the
voltage at C1 changes between approx. 266 V and 370 V.

Check output power at the 400 W socket: 400 W ±12 W, 200 W ±12 W. These values are not
adjustable separately.

M4.3.6 Miscellaneous function tests

Earth current detection:

Operate the ballast at an isolating transformer.
At the 575 W socket bridge terminals A and E.
Briefly connect a resistor of abt. 27 Ohms between lamp socket C or D and one terminal of
the main circuit breaker: The Ballast must switch off immediately.

Idle Shut down

At the 575 W socket bridge terminals A to E. Switch on the ballast.

After about 3 seconds the ballast will shut off (LED’s 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8 will go out).

PE-LED:
Set the isolating transformer output to 100 V, attach a resistor of abt. 27 Ohms between the
housing and one terminal of the main circuit breaker. On the front plate the indicator "PE"
must light up.

Overtemp protection:
Either block the cooling of the electronic ballast (wrap up ballast hermetically and run it at
low mains voltage), until LED "Temp" lights up and the ballast switches off.
Or briefly connect IC 2 pin 13 on the Control Board to ground (M 1): "Temp" lights up. The
indication of "Temp" is only reset when the internal ±15 V voltage supply is interrupted.

Minimum input voltage:

Device must still run with 80 V input voltage.

Overvoltage protection:

The main circuit breaker trips at an input voltage in the range of 270..290 V.
