    CHAPTER 1

    THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

    This chapter consists of the Background of the Study, Statement of

    the Problem and Hypothesis, Conceptual Framework, Significance of the

    Study, Scope and Delimitation and Definition of terms.

    Background of the Study

    The use of organic chemicals has been still widely relevant

    nowadays. People use chemicals to repel or kill insects and pests more

    especially in plants. One example of it is chili as the main ingredient

    together with other somponents which has the same property of chili.

    Chili is small hot-tasting pod of a variety of a capsicum, a special

    type of pepper. Insecticide on the other hand is a substance used for

    destroying insects or other organisms harmful plants or to animals.

    Chili as the main ingredient of pesticide would not kill an insect

    but the spray will repek most insects and other pests that eat garden

    plants. The capsaicin that gives chili powder its hot flavor is distasteful

    for insects and they do not like plants with strong odor or taste.

    The purpose of the researchers to conduct the study is to know the

    effectiveness of spicy property of chili as main ingredient and alternative

    to insecticide.

    Statement of the Problem

    This study aims to know how effective chili is, as an organic

    pesticide. This study seeks to answer the following question:

    1. What are the contents of the made chili natural insecticide?

    2. How effective is chili extract as an alternative to conventional

    insecticide in terms of:

    a. the insect’s lifespan after having exposure with the chili natural

    insecticide;

    b. amount of chili extract in the solution;

    c. type of plant?

    3. Is chili natural insecticide more convenient than conventional

    insecticide?

    Hypothesis

    The researchers formulated hypothesis of the possible outcomes of

    the experiment.

    Ha: Chili as a main ingredient is an effective alternative to conventional

    insecticide.

    Ho: Chili as a main ingredient is not an effective alternative to

    conventional insecticide.

    Significance of the Study

    The result of the study is beneficial to the following:

    Gardeners. In this study, gardeners can use this research product to

    protect plants from insects without using synthetic chemicals.

    Community. The study will be beneficial for the community to grow

    plants properly by repelling insects which are the threats on plants' life.

    Scope and Delimitation

    The study was conducted in Dagupan City 2400, Pangasinan. It

    aims to find the effectiveness of chili as the main ingredient in making an

    alternative to conventional insecticide.

    The materials used in the study were oregano, lemon grass and

    garlic which have the same insect-repelling characteristics.

    Definition of Terms

    For better understanding of this study, the following terms are

    defined:

    Chili.

    - Conceptually, a type of fruit plant with a hot-tasting quality from

    the genus Capsicum

    - Operationally, used as the main ingredient for producing

    alternative to conventional pesticide due to its repelling property

    Repellent.

    - Conceptually, a substance that deters insects or other pests from

    approaching or settling

    - Operationally, the main property of chili insecticide that keeping

    insects away from plants

    Capsaicin.

    - Conceptually, an active component of chili peppers

    - Operationally, it is an irritant for insects, and produces a sensation

    of burning in any tissue with which it comes into contact.

    Natural Insecticide.

    - Conceptually, insecticide made from naturally occurring

    substances or self-made mixtures

    - Operationally, chili pesticide for example is made up of natural

    substances like chili

    Capsicum.

    - Conceptually, any of a genus of pepper plants of the nightshade

    family, with fleshy, usually red pods, including the hot peppers

    - Operationally, chili, the main ingredient, belongs to this group

    which exhibits the same components and properties
