The female reproductive system has several jobs to perform. The ovary releases a new egg
each month, and the uterine lining gets ready in case fertilization occurs. These changes are
controlled by hormones.
Stage 1: Menstruation.
The menstrual cycle has many stages. We are going to start with Menstruation as Stage 1 because
it is the most visible stage. During menstruation, the lining of the uterus breaks down. Menstruation
happens when the egg is not fertilized (a sperm did not join with the egg).
Reading Check What happens to the uterine lining during menstruation?
_____________________________________________________
The job of the uterine blood is to supply nutrients for an embryo if fertilization did occur. The uterine
lining is controlled by the hormone progesterone. Progesterone is produced in the ovary. The
progesterone level remains high until just prior to menstruation. When it decreases, the uterine
lining is lost. Menstruation lasts approximately 5 days.
Reading Check: What is the job of the hormone Progesterone? ____________________________
Reading Check” Where is Progesterone produced? What organ does it target? _______________
Stage 2: Follicle Stage. The pituitary gland releases the hormone FSH or follicle stimulating
hormone. This hormone tells the ovary to produce an egg.
Reading Check: What produces FSH? ____________________________________________
Reading Check: What does FSH tell the ovary to do?__________________________________
As the egg matures, it produces a hormone estrogen. One of the roles of estrogen is to stop the
production of FSH. Another role of the estrogen is to start the accumulation of blood in the uterus.
The follicle stage occurs from day 5 to day 13.
Reading Check: What hormone does the egg produce? _________________________________
Reading Check: Two roles of estrogen are: 1. Stop the production of _____________. 2. Start the
accumulation of ____________ in the _______________.
Stage 3: Ovulation. Ovulation is the release of the egg from the ovary. This usually occurs around
the 14th day.
Reading Check What happens in ovulation? _____________________________________
Stage 4: Luteal Stage
After the egg is released from the ovary, the pituitary gland produces
LH or Luteinizing hormone. The job of this hormone is to stimulate
the ovary to “fill in” the open follicle with cells.
Reading Check What produces LH? ______________________________
Reading Check What is the job of LH?
_____________________________________________________
88
As these cells are produced, they release a hormone called progesterone. Progesterone signals the
pituitary gland to stop the release of LH and it tells the uterus to keep the accumulated uterine
blood. The uterine lining gets thick with nutrient rich blood for the embryo. If an embryo fails to
implant, the progesterone level decreases and the menstruation stage occurs again.
Reading Check: Cells in the open follicle of the ovary produce what hormone?
____________________
Reading Check: Two roles of progesterone are:3. Signal the ____________________ to stop the
release of _____________. 4. Tell the ____________ to keep the uterine _______________. If an
egg is fertilized, the egg will produce a hormone called Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG)
Hormone, which targets the uterus to maintain its blood supply. HCG is the “pregnancy hormone”
that is tested by home pregnancy kits to determine if a female is pregnant.
Reading Check What does HCG do?

1. Get another calendar marked by the day-to-day changes in the menstrual cycle.
2. You will be given a set of diagrams to place on the calendar. The diagrams will not be in
proper order. You may not need all the diagrams that show the uterus.
