COMPREHENSION 1 — YOU HAVE 15 MINUTES TO COMPLETE THIS SECTION

From Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll.

Read the passage below carefully and then answer the quesons that follow

Alice was beginning to get very red of si5ng by her sister on the bank, and of having nothing to do.
Once or twice she had peeped into the book her sister was reading, but it had no pictures or conversa-
ons in it, "and what is the use of a book," thought Alice, "without pictures or conversaons?"

So she was considering in her own mind (as well as she could, for the day made her feel very sleepy
and stupid), whether the pleasure of making a daisy-chain would be worth the trouble of ge5ng up
and picking the daisies, when suddenly a White Rabbit with pink eyes ran close by her.

There was nothing so very remarkable in that, nor did Alice think it so very much out of the way to
hear the Rabbit say to itself, "Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be too late!" But when the Rabbit actually took
a watch out of its waistcoat-pocket and looked at it and then hurried on, Alice started to her feet, for
it flashed across her mind that she had never before seen a rabbit with either a waistcoat-pocket, or a
watch to take out of it, and, burning with curiosity, she ran across the field aAer it and was just in me
to see it pop down a large rabbit-hole, under the hedge. In another moment, down went Alice aAer it!

The rabbit-hole went straight on like a tunnel for some way and then dipped suddenly down, so sud-
denly that Alice had not a moment to think about stopping herself before she found herself falling
down what seemed to be a very deep well.

Either the well was very deep, or she fell very slowly, for she had plenty of me, as she went down, to
look about her. First, she tried to make out what she was coming to, but it was too dark to see any-
thing; then she looked at the sides of the well and noced that they were filled with cupboards and
book-shelves; here and there she saw maps and pictures hung upon pegs. She took down a jar from
one of the shelves as she passed. It was labelled "ORANGE MARMALADE," but, to her great disap-
pointment, it was empty; she did not like to drop the jar, so managed to put it into one of the cup-
boards as she fell past it.

Here is another extract from later in the same book.

In it, Alice has eaten a cake and has shrunk to the size of an insect. She is now trying to find her way into
a garden she saw earlier, but is lost.

Read this extract, and then answer the quesons.

"The first thing I've got to do," said Alice to herself, as she wandered about in the wood, "is to grow to
my right size again; and the second thing is to find my way into that lovely garden. I suppose I ought to
eat or drink something or other, but the great queson is 'What?'"

Alice looked all around her at the flowers and the blades of grass, but she could not see anything that
looked like the right thing to eat or drink under the circumstances. There was a large mushroom grow-
ing near her, about the same height as herself. She stretched herself up on ptoe and peeped over the
edge and her eyes immediately met those of a large blue caterpillar, that was si5ng on the top, with its
arms folded, quietly smoking a long hookah and taking not the smallest noce of her or of anything
else.

At last the Caterpillar took the hookah out of its mouth and addressed Alice in a languid, sleepy voice.

"Who are you?" said the Caterpillar.

Alice replied, rather shyly, "I—I hardly know, sir, just at present—at least I know who I was when I got
up this morning, but I think I must have changed several mes since then."

"What do you mean by that?" said the Caterpillar, sternly. "Explain yourself!"
