Chapter 3
METHODOLOGY
This chapter deals with the methods of research used during the course of
study. It discusses the research design, research locale, research respondents,
research instrument, research procedure, and statistical treatment.
Research Design
The design of this quantitative research study is a descriptive method in
order to determine the level and extent of awareness, attitude and practice on
solid waste management of Alabel Public Market. Descriptive research is a
method of quantitative research which has a goal to gather quantitative
information to be used for analysis of the sample (Bhat, n.d.). The main point is
that “descriptive research seeks to describe the characteristics or behavior of an
audience.” (McNeill, 2018).
The areas used in this research are also correlated to each other; hence
this research is also correlational research. Price, Jhangiani, & Chiang (2015)
define correlational research as “a type of non-experimental research in which
the researcher measures two variables and assesses the statistical relationship
between them with little or no effort to control extraneous variables.”
Research Locale
This study will be conducted at Alabel Public Market, Alabel Sarangani
Province.

The researchers personally chose this Government place/area to diagnose
the awareness, attitude and practice in solid waste management of the owners
and vendors in respective establishments.
Research Respondents
The respondents of this study will be fifty (50) the solid waste generators
in the food service establishments and classified as bakery, eatery, food carts,
mobile vendors, market vendors, and sari-sari stores. They are the food
sellers/owners in the public market of Alabel, Sarangani Province. The
researcher will be utilized the purposive sampling technique in selecting the
respondents in the study.
Research Instruments
To conduct the research, the researchers will create a questionnaire. The
researchers will base the survey questionnaire under the Republic Act 9003.
Questions were formatted to fit the respondents involved in the study. The
survey questionnaire was then validated by experts in the field of waste
management.
The survey questionnaire will be composed of four (4) parts. Part 1 will be
the demographic profile of the respondents. Part 2 will be the level of awareness
of the owners/vendors towards solid waste management which composed of 10
items. Part 3 will be the attitude of the owners/vendors towards solid waste
management which composed of 10 items. And the part will be the practices of

the owners/vendors towards solid waste management which composed of 10
items.
Research Procedure
In order to conduct the pilot survey, a letter seeking for approval to
conduct the pilot survey will be made and given to the Alabel Public Market
Head/Supervisor. After the letter will be credited, the pilot survey will be
conducted. Once the survey will be done during free time of the respondents,
the researchers will also orientating the owners/vendors of the proposed system
in disposing of waste as part of their action towards the problem. After the
survey will be conducted, the data were then gathered, encoded and interpreted.
The instruments will be personally administered by the researchers to the
respondents one by one. As soon as the respondents were done answered the
questionnaire; retrieval will followed.
Statistical Treatment
Different statistical treatments were used in analyzing the gathered data.
In problems one to three asking about each area, the mean will be used to
determine the extent and level in the areas of awareness, attitudes, and
practices of the respondents towards solid waste management. For problems
four to six, to determine the significant relationships between level of awareness
and extent of practice, level of awareness and attitudes, and degree of practices
and attitudes, the Pearson-R will be used by the researchers. The tables below
show the basis for the interpretation of the data acquired in the survey.
