Chapter 1: Introduction

Chapter 1: Introduction
This guide will detail the process necessary for launching an Advanced Analytics (AA) or Data Lake
(DL) instance in a virtual machine (VM).
We will cover:
l The sizing specifications of your VM instance
l The VM prerequisites
l The set up process

2
Chapter 2: Specification Table

Chapter 2: Specification Table

These are the minimum sizing specifications needed for setting up your product on VMware . If you
follow these guidelines and use the minimum specifications, you will get nearly the same
performance levels as on the Exabeam appliances.
We do not support hybrid deployments (e.g. where some nodes are physical hosts while others
are virtual hosts). If you choose to deploy Exabeam products in a virtual environment, all
nodes must be deployed on the same virtual platform.
vCPU should not be confused with the number of CPUs or Cores for the processor. A vCPU is
typically equal to the number of threads in the processor.
Required configurations for storage:
l HDDs and SSDs must be local (RAID 10) or connected through an iSCSI 10+ GB backplane
l Do not use NFS or VMFS with extents spread across multiple drives and managed by ESX
l The SSD drive files MUST be put on an SSD backed data store, otherwise performance will be
impacted
l Disk storage is required to be configured with thick provisioning (eager zeroed recommended)
l Network card must support paravirtualization (VMXNet v.3 adapters)

Required CPU and memory allocation :

l We do not recommend sharing the host with any other product or resource
l The table below details the CPU and memory allocation of the Exabeam OVA. These values
are required for Exabeam products to operate optimally. However, you should also allocate
additional RAM and vCPUs to the hypervisor (i.e. not allocated to any other VM).
l We recommend additional 4 core to any VM for the OS/hypervisor

l We recommend allocate 10 GB of RAM to any VM

NOTE: The Advanced Analytics instances below match or slightly exceed the specifications of the
Exabeam hardware. As such, the number of nodes for your AA deployment should be the same
whether you deploy with physical hardware or in a virtual environment.

Node Type in
OVA
Exabeam Cluster

AA Master Node vCPU: 40 (Intel Xeon Ivy Bridge or newer processor)

and EA Node Memory: 256 GB
(equivalent to Storage

EX4000) 3 x 960 GB (SSD)
6 x 2 TB (HDD)

vCPU: 16 (Intel Xeon Ivy Bridge or newer processor)

AA Worker Node Memory: 128 GB
and IR Node
Storage:
(equivalent to 1 x 150 GB (SSD)
EX2000 fully
loaded) 3 x 960 GB (SSD)
6 x 2 TB (HDD)

Please make sure that you follow the sizing direction provided by Exabeam for your cluster.

NOTE: For Data Lake deployments in a virtual environment, Exabeam determined that the optimal
size of virtual instances differs from the physical hardware specification. Memory is less in a
virtual host (128 GB instead of 192 GB physical) as well as the size of its HDD is half as small (9 x 2
TB instead of 9 x 4 TB in physical). Therefore, Data Lake virtual deployments will likely include
more instances than in a physical environment.

Chapter 3: Supported Hypervisor Version

Chapter 3: Supported Hypervisor Version

Exabeam recommends deploying the products on VMware ESXi 6.5 or later.
Other hypervisor versions have not been tested with the Exabeam products.

Chapter 4: Deploying on Virtual Environments (OVA)

Chapter 4: Deploying on Virtual Environments (OVA)

We recommend using ESXi VSphere Web Access for this installation process. Note that you have an
updated version of the VSphere Web Access GUI; otherwise, the OVA may fail to deploy.
Instantiate Your Virtual Machine
Step 1: Import the OVA into your hypervisor and follow its installation instructions. Select thick
disk provisioning.
Step 2: Select thick eager zeroed disk provisioning. Make sure a VMXNet v.3 adapter is bound to
your Virtual Machine.
Step 3: Follow the installation steps to complete the process.
