Absolute Value of A Number

The document outlines a lesson plan on teaching absolute value to 7th grade students. It includes objectives, content, learning tasks, and a reflection section. The lesson introduces absolute value and representing it on a number line. Students work in groups to find the distance of numbers from 0 on a number line. They then practice finding the absolute value of different numbers. The lesson aims to help students understand and appreciate the real-life applications of absolute value.

I. Objectives:
At the end of 60 minutes, 80% of the learners are expected to:
1. define what is absolute value of a number;
2. represents the absolute value of a number on a number line as the distance of a
number from 0; and
3. appreciate the use of absolute value in real life.

The teacher will ask the students to find the distance (steps) of the following:
 from chalkboard to the teachers table.
 from student A to student B.
 from chalkboard to the CR
Ask students to measure the distance in meters from Valencia National High School

Group Activity
 The teacher will group the class into four.
 The teacher will show the number line.

Ask them to find the distance of following values from 0.

Group 1 Group 2
Values Distance from 0 Values Distance from 0
1.) 5 _______ units 1.) 7 _______ units
2.) 3 _______ units 2.) 10 _______ units
3.) -2 _______ units 3.) -3 _______ units
4.) -1 _______ units 4.) -7 _______ units
5.) -6 _______ units 5.) -5 _______ units

Group 3 Group 4
Values Distance from 0 Values Distance from 0
1.) 8 _______ units 1.) 4 _______ units
2.) 6 _______ units 2.) 2 _______ units
3.) -10 _______ units 3.) -3 _______ units
4.) -8 _______ units 4.) -4 _______ units
5.) -9 _______ units 5.) -5 _______ units

4.) 8 4.) 4
5.) 9 5.) 5
D. Explain
 The students will explain their individual output.
 The teacher will then explain that the distance is the absolute value.
E. Elaborate
 The teacher further emphasize that absolute value of a number is the distance
between that number and zero on the number line.
 The teacher further elaborate the symbol of absolute value
The absolute value of a number, denoted "| |" is the distance of the number
from zero.
