THE CREATION OF IMPROVISED INSTRUMENT TO

MEASURE WIND SPEED
KESSER JOHN S. SIBONGA and JUVY S. JUAREZ
Master of Arts in Education major in Physical Science

I. INTRODUCTION
Philippines as one of the countries facing the Pacific Ocean experience a number of
atmospheric phenomena. Changing weather, enormous raindrops and wind with varying speed
and direction, are common in the country. With this, measuring wind speed is of high value for the
locals to understand and prepare to endure typhoons and monsoons. In this scientific inquiry, we
are going to develop an improvised instrument that can make measuring wind speed available
locally for the leaners on their research and academic undertaking.
II. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
This inquiry aims to answer the questions:
1. How does an improvise anemometer is created?
2. What is the wind speed of the wind from the wind simulation setup?
III. MATERIALS
● Lighter
● Hard Straws
● Plastic Cups
● Candle
● Stick Glue

III. PROCEDURE
A. CREATING THE ANEMOMETER
1. Connect 4 hard straws forming perpendicularly connected segments (cross).
2. At the tip of every straw paste the plastic cup with the aid of the gluestick.
3. Create stand and connect the stand to the base, make sure that your
anemometer can freely move/rotate. Indicated below is the picture of the
finished instrument.

B. MEASURING WIND SPEED
1. Put a mark on one of the cups in your anemometer
to serve as your reference point in counting the
number of rotations made.
2. Prepare the setup, put the electric fan on the top of
the table with a distance of about 2 feet from the
base of the anemometer.
3. Set a timer of a 1 minute time frame. Figure 1.3: Reference Mark
4. Start the fan (level 1), count the number of rotations made for 1 minute.
5. Record your data on the table provided below (result section).
IV. RESULT AND DISCUSSION
Data Table
Trial No. Time No. of Rotations Performed By
1 1 minute 43 Mr. KJS Sibonga
2 1 minute 42 Ms. JS Juarez
3 1 minute 43 Mr. KJS Sibonga
4 1 minute 43 Ms. JS Juarez
5 1 minute 44 Mr. KJS Sibonga
The condition in the inquiry is; the improvised anemometer was exposed to
the fan that was set on level one. The time is bounded at 1 minute. The trials was performed by
the different persons to secure the exactness of data and to keep the inquiry from bias. As shown
in the table, the average rotation made by the anemometer in one minute across the 5 trials is 43
trials.

V. CONCLUSION

The improvised anemometer is created out of common, available and cheap

materials from the community to encourage learners to engage in scientific inquiry to nature with
the use of self-constructed and improvised scientific instrument. Furthermore, as to the data
gathered in the inquiry, the wind speed recorded averages 43 rotations/ minute across trials and
repletion.

VI. RECOMMENDATION

The researchers recommend the use of this instrument for research and
academic inquiry conducted by the learners and science teacher sin the public school setting
where resources are limited and instruments are not available. the researchers also encourages
the improvisation and instrumentation of science equipment out of the materials available in the
local setting to promote cheaper and meaningful science – inquiry based learning. Further
replication, improvement and studies is encourage by the researchers to improve this inquiry
study.
