PRODUCT DESIGN ASSIGNMENT ON APPLE INC
Introduction
Apple Inc. is an American multinational technology company headquartered in Cupertino, California, that designs, develops, and
sells consumer electronics, computer software, and online services. It is considered one of the Big Four tech companies along
with Amazon, Google, and Facebook.
The company's hardware products include the iPhone smartphone, the iPad tablet computer, the Mac personal computer,
the iPod portable media player, the Apple Watch smartwatch, the Apple TV digital media player, the AirPods wireless earbuds
and the HomePod smart speaker. Apple's software includes the macOS, iOS, iPadOS, watchOS, and tvOS operating systems,
the iTunes media player, the Safari web browser, the Shazam acoustic fingerprint utility, and the iLife and iWork creativity and
productivity suites, as well as professional applications like Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, and Xcode. Its online services include
the iTunes Store, the iOS App Store, Mac App Store, Apple Music, Apple TV+, iMessage, and iCloud. Other services
include Apple Store, Genius Bar, AppleCare, Apple Pay, Apple Pay Cash, and Apple Card.
History
Apple Computers, Inc. was founded on April 1, 1976, by college dropouts Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, who brought to the new
company a vision of changing the way people viewed computers. Jobs and Wozniak wanted to make computers small enough for
people to have them in their homes or offices. Simply put, they wanted a computer that was user-friendly.
Jobs and Wozniak started out building the Apple I in Jobs' garage and sold them without a monitor, keyboard, or casing (which
they decided to add on in 1977). The Apple II revolutionized the computer industry with the introduction of the first-ever color
graphics. Sales jumped from $7.8 million in 1978 to $117 million in 1980, the year Apple went public.
Wozniak left Apple in 1983 due to a diminishing interest in the day-to-day running of Apple Computers. Jobs then hired
PepsiCo's John Sculley to be president. However, this move backfired and after much controversy with Sculley, Jobs left in 1985
and went on to new and bigger things. He founded his own company NeXT Software and he also bought Pixar from George
Lucas, which would later become a huge success in computer animation of such movies as Toy Story, A Bug's Life, Monsters, Inc.,
and Finding Nemo.
Through the rest of the 1980s, Apple was still doing well and in 1990 it posted its highest profits yet. This was, however, mostly
due to the plans that Jobs had already set in motion before he left, most notably his deal with a tiny company by the name of
Adobe, creator of the Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF). Together the two companies created the phenomenon known as
desktop publishing.
Back in 1985 Sculley turned down an appeal from Microsoft founder Bill Gates to license its software. This decision would later
come back to haunt him because Microsoft, whose Windows operating system (OS) featured a graphical interface similar to
Apple's, became their toughest competition in the late 1980s and throughout the 1990s.
Over the course of a few years, Apple's market share suffered slowly after its peak in 1990 and by 1996, experts believed the
company to be doomed. It was not until 1997, when Apple was desperately in need of an operating system, that it bought out
NeXT Software (Jobs' company) and the board of directors decided to ask for some help from an old friend: Steve Jobs. Jobs
became an interim CEO, or iCEO as he called himself (Jobs was not officially the CEO until 2000). Jobs decided to make some
changes around Apple. He forged an alliance with Microsoft to create a Mac version of its popular office software.
Not long after this decision was the turning point for the company. Jobs revamped the computers and introduced the iBook (a
personal laptop). He also started branching out into mp3 players (iPod) and media player software (iTunes). This was Jobs' best
move yet. While computers are still an important part of Apple, its music related products (i.e. iPod and iTunes) have become the
company's most profitable sector. Apple has also recently released the iPhone, a cellular phone, and the Apple TV. While Steve
Jobs died October 5, 2011, Apple continues on with his legacy.
Apple Inc. has pioneered its way through the computer industry—not once, but multiple times throughout its existence. It believes
in pushing the limits of creativity in order to produce interesting and valuable products for society. After more than 30 years, it is
undeniable that Apple "has had a profound impact on technology, innovating and influencing not only how we use computers but
the activities for which what we use them.

Market segmentation is the identification of different portions of a market to satisfy the needs of all the potential customers.
Market segmentation allows a company to drive complete, unified solutions that are in agreement with customer outreach,
messaging and channel strategies for supporting and selling to customers. Apple Inc understands the need for market segmentation
and thus operates in different market segments. Apple Inc applies the strategy of studying the market and then targeting specific
user experiences. The company then builds a product around the experience accordingly. There are two types of market
segmentation. These include Psychographic and behavioral segmentation. Psychographic segmentation is the grouping of
customers as per their lifestyle. Interests, activities, and opinions are a good way of measuring lifestyle. Behavioral segmentation,
on the other hand, is the actual behavior of the customer towards the company’s products. Some of the variables in this
segmentation method include usage rate, brand loyalty, sought benefits, readiness to buy, and user status. For different segments
to be practical, they must be accessible, identifiable, substantial, unique, and durable. The market segmentation of apples includes
demographical bases, geographical bases, behavior bases and psychographic bases.
The demographic market segmentation of Apple is successful in that the company develops products based on lifecycle, age, and
occupation of the customers. The products are supplied to different areas while categorizing the PCs on family size and age (Al-
Refaie & Bata, 2016). A good example is a PC with more games for kids and a PC with latest software and features for
professionals. In addition, the younger generation is more into fun as compared to the older generation. A phone with a high
graphic resolution is favored by the young people while a digital watch with the capability to monitor one’s pulse rate would be
favored by the older generation.
Another market segment is based on geographical areas. Apple has established itself all over the world. The company’s brand is
known all over the world. Apple Inc has retailed stores in 45 states out of the 50 states in the United States of America. It also has
stores in more than 18 countries all over the world. In addition, the company’s products can be accessed from the online retail
stores from anywhere in the world. In recent times, the company has chosen to apply a vertical growth strategy.

LARGER THAN GDP OF NETHERLANDS APPLE IS VALUED ABOVE 1 TRILLION NOW.
In entire 2018, 217.72 million iPhones were shipped worldwide. Apple typically releases at least one new version of its iPhone
each year, a strategy which has helped the company consistently pull in quarterly sales figures in the tens of millions.
SALES were of 266 USD billion in 2018 which comprises of all products.
Apples already crossed 237 Billion USD for this year and hopes to better its last years record sales.
Even though there was a slight less consumer spending this year due to uncertainities, ahead of festive times Christmas
black Friday, new years apple hopes to break its record of 270.
STRATEGY
They know the product will sell itself without relying on pomp and circumstance. With stripped down content and simple
advertising, they’ve gone on to sell more than 1.5 billion products.
The logo is a perfect example of their simplicity – a simple apple shape with a chunk missing. There are no clever words to
accompany it – none are necessary. Why rely on words when visuals will suffice?
According to CEB, the most effective way to sell a product to a consumer isn’t through complicated advertisements, flashy
websites, or hyper-inflated ad copy. You reach them by simplifying the decision making process.
Part of Apple’s narrative is how they overcame the challenges in the early days of the startup, and how Steve Jobs and his team
led Apple to greatness through innovation. That’s the kind of narrative that people relate to – one that pulls at their heartstrings
and connects them to a brand.
Consistency, from product to core values, reinforces the beliefs of an audience. It tells a customer they can always rely on you to
deliver on your promise.
And THEY HAVE ANNOUNCED CHEAP PRICED PHONES IN THE RANGE OF LESS THAN 600 USDS COMING
NEXT YEAR.
CUSTOMER REVIEWS
There are lots of reviews on net for XR, I would give just quick points based on my experience of XR 128 GB.
Pros:
1). Perfect size for a phone for playing game, consuming social media and entertainment.
2). Probably best battery ever in iPhone. I use to charge it once in 2 days despite all day calls, music and YouTube usage. Though
I don’t play much games on it.
3). Superb loudspeaker and call reception. Very clear sound quality.
4). Fantastic build quality with Glass back providing wireless charging.
5). Super camera at back and it does the job more than satisfactory. 12 MP processor has been utilised at utmost level. Don’t go by
merely MP numbers, apple image processor is superb even at 12 MP. Front camera gives very nice portrait shots. It just does the
job without much of beautification processing like in other android devices.
6). Awesome face recognition even in pitch dark condition. It works in collaboration with multiple sensors and front camera
unlike other contemporary phones which are purely dependent on front camera. Which results into 100% safe locking. And also
it’s very fast under any situation. Just tap on the screen and the phone is ready to work instantly. You don’t even realise that there
is a lock/unlock processing.
7). Fantastic screen with smoothest interface. iOS works magically on XR. Though there are some negative reviews on net for the
screen but I don’t feel an iota of issue in this marvellous screen. Yes you can’t count pixels in it. It’s just perfect screen. Watching
YouTube is perfectly fine on this device.
8). XR is a Monster in speed and processing. It surely miles ahead of its android counterparts.
10). With current discount of 17 K plus HDFC cashback this is undoubtedly a value for money product.
11). Considering the trend this phone will take at least 4-5 iOS update which means it will be in mainstream product line even
after 3-4 years which is not the case for any Android device.
12. It’s perfect package and best option against XSMax. No overheating, No lag in app switching, It just bang on.
Cons:
1). No headphone connector for 3.5 mm jack though it comes with lightning headphone instead of 3.5 mm jack. It’s not cool as
considering the price apple should have given the connector. Original connector cost 900 INR
2). No fast charging adapter. It comes with 5wt charger which takes almost 3 hours for complete charging. Though it support fast
charging. Apple should have given a fast charger in packing.
3). Though I am ok with notch, many people might not like the cut. However Once you get use to it, this becomes unnoticeable.
4). Slightly thick bezels and heavy weight which is again not a deal breaker. As you hold this device you feel the sturdy and
quality product Fromm Apple.
5). Finger print scanner is gone and people might miss it in this mobile. However after a week usage I am now much more
comfortable with this departure.
Verdict:
With current Apple discount, XR 128 GB is a perfect buy. If you have the budget, don’t think twice just go for it. Considering the
price gap between XR and XSMax I would say XR is a better buy in every aspect with same Camera, Hardware and build quality.
It has an advantage of future iOS update over its android competitors.
Above all this, XR is IP67 certified which means now you need not to worry about splashes and dust. It’s safer, stronger and
better iPhone in every sense. -Sanjeev
iOS 13 is a failed attempt from apple. The phone doesn't have a smooth wifi or network connectivity. Its worse than some other
phones half the cost. Absolute disappointment. Even older phones like 5s and 6s don't show network issues while the iPhone XR
has these issues. Apple support is clueless and can't solve the issue. Disappointed with this apple product. All else is good just that
the phones connectivity which is the most important thing for a phone is atrocious. Avoid if u can.- Ankita Jhamb
Up until today I have recommended Apple products to everybody, unfortunately this has now changed due to the way Apple
Support has treated me. My wife’s series 3 watch cracked for no reason, Apple accept that there is a problem with the series
3 screens but the crack on my wife’s screen does not meet the criteria by Apple. So a watch that cracks for no reason has to
crack the way Apple say it does to be a valid claim for repair. Don’t buy anything Apple in the future. –Paul Gloster
Apple totally bricked my iPad with this update. They won’t accept liability and now want to charge me £306 to fix it. I will
never buy another Apple product again. Very let down.
