Publishing ICT Projects

Empowerment Technology: Chapter 4, Lesson 1

Objective

* Demonstrate how online ICT Projects for Social Change are uploaded, managed, and promoted for
maximum audience impact.

* Generate a technical report interpreting data analytics, e.g. Google, Facebook, or similar traffic data on
the general aspects of search visibility, reach, and virality.

Uploading and Publishing an ICT Project

You can upload your files using the different platforms like:

1. WordPress- is a free and open-source content management system (CMS) based on PHP and MySQL.

2. Microsoft Office Project Server- is a project management server solution made by Microsoft that allow
you to view and upload documents.

3. File Manager- is an uploading tool web interface that allows you to manage all your files.

Website Management

A website management platform is an integrated set of tools and services that allows teams to create,
design, develop, launch, manage, administer, and monitor website contents. Web building involves web
management, navigation support, homepage, layout, content writing, and design for multimedia.

Examples of Web Management platforms:

1. WordPress- is a free and open-source content management system (CMS) based on PHP and MySQL.

2. Drupal- a free and open-source content-management framework written in PHP and distributed under
the GNU General Public License.
3. Joomla- is a free and open-source content management system (CMS) for publishing web content.
Jooomla is written in PHP, uses object-oriented programming (OOP) techniques.

Hands-on: Using WordPress to Publish/ Manage ICT Contents

You can upload documents to your WordPress.com blog using the Add Media icon on your editor. The
following steps are particularly for users who wish to upload a document and add its download link to a
blog post or page.

Signing Up to WordPress

1. Enter wordpress.com on your web browser, then press Enter.

2. Select Create Website

3. Select what type of website you are creating. For example, choose Photography under Arts &
Entertainment.

4. Choose a list of my latest post as our homepage look.

5. In this part, you can pick any theme. You can change it to a different theme later.

6. Enter your domain. This is what people type into their web browser to visit your website. Select the
free option.

7. Select the Free Plan

8. Next step is to enter your email address and password. Then click Create My Account.

9. Finally, click Continue. Go to your email to confirm your email address.

10. You will be sent to your website at default theme and settings.

Uploading documents from your computer and adding a download link to the page

1. On the left side panel beside Pages, click Add.

2. Change the page title to downloads. Also add the word downloads at the end of the URL. Then press ()
to add media.

3. Select the document to be downloaded by other people, then press insert.


Note: These current files are already uploaded. To upload a new file from your computer, select Add now
and locate your files.

4. Press Publish to confirm and save your changes

5. Then press View Page.

6. On the website, you still need to place the download link on the page. On the lower right part of the
page click Customize.

7. Click on the () to edit the links.

8. On the left side panel, click Add Items, then select Downloads page to add it in the links. Last step is to
click Save & Publish.

9. In the final page, you now have the Downloads link and the link access of your file from your website.

Promotion, Traction, and Traffic Monitoring

To get more traffic and traction, you should not only be good in writing/designing, but also good in
promotion. You should combine promotion campaigns and high quality content to get more shares, more
email subscribers, higher search rankings. Promote, validate, grow your product, get, keep, and grow
customers and users.

Promotion

1. Use multimedia- there should first be a way on how the reader will encounter your post. One way is to
blend search, social, and email, created in different ways. You can create infographics, charts, diagrams,
SlideShare presentations, videos, and podcasts.

2. Use various online tools- create headlines that grab attention on email, twitter, and facebook posts.

3. Use images- create images on Pinterest, Instagram, SlideShare and YouTube that will catch the
attention of viewers.

4. Use Blog- use your blogs to frequently connect with other people and build relationships and network.

5. Collaborate- collaboration with friends, influencers, readers will strengthen your network.

6. Update- always have a fresh content and regularly update posts, news, write ups, or images.
Traction Tools

Tools for collecting validation and feedback for business to business/enterprise products and ideas.

1. LinkedIn- is a business-oriented social networking service. It is mainly used for professional networking.
It sells access to information about its users to recruiters and sales professionals.

2. Google Adwords- is an online advertising service that enables advertisers to compete to display brief
advertising copy to web users, based on cookies, keywords, predefined by the advertisers that might link
the copy to the content of web pages shows to users. Web pages from Google and from partner websites
are designed to allow Google to select and display this advertising copy. Advertisers pay when users
diverts their browsing to seek more information about the copy displayed, and partner websites receive a
portion of the income they generate.

8. Reddit- allows you to gather feedback and advice.

9. Facebook Ads- is an ad network platform to test and validate ideas.

Evaluation through User Feedback/ Interaction

After your website has been launched, you would want to keep track of how many people are visting your
site, and do an analysis of the traffic statistics and data. By doing the analysis, you will know your next
strategies, how to adjust your promotional activities, which format works best, which topics get traction,
and which keywords get clicked more.

User feedback allows you to hear and see how many people are visiting your site, what they are saying
and doing. There are many web hosting services that can supply your with detailed and timely traffic
reports, which give you information as to the number of visits to your website, page views, where they
come from, which pages they access, and other information that you need. The common method for
users to provide feedback is through e-mail. E-mail messages for comments from customers allow you to
use that information to identify and resolve technical problems quickly and improve your site or content.

An example of viewing website statistics is AWStats in cPanel. cPanel offers several built-in statistic
reports, and AWStats is one of the more popular programs. AWStats updates every 24 hours and also
instantly when you click their link. The statistics report gives details about the amount of people coming
to your website and other information.
