Broaching and Broaching Machine

-What is broaching?

 Broaching is a machine process that uses a toothed tool, called a broach, to remove material.
 Broaching is similar technique to shaping with a long multiple-tooth cutter.
 Broaching is a machining process for removal of layer of material of desired width and depth
usually in one stroke by a slender rod or bar type cutter having a series of cutting edges with
gradually increasing protrusions as indicated.

Horizontal Broaching

- Are designed for pull broaching, surface broaching, continuous broaching, and rotary
broaching.

Vertical Broaching

- Designed for push broaching, pull-down broaching, pull-up broaching, or surface broaching.

Continuous broaching (Video)

-used for mass production of small work pieces.

-rotary or horizontal type of the movement can be provided.

-In rotary machine, rotary tables is used. W/P is indexed and broaching is done.

-In horizontal machine, conveyer continuously moves and broach remains steady.

Design and construction considerations

 Material to be broached
 Size and shape of cut
 Quality of surface finish
 Part tolerance
 Production rates
 Type of machine
 Work holding method
 Strength of the work piece
Material of Broach

 Based on cutting tool material properties

 Mostly made up of HSS. Ceramic are not used as low speed
 Cemented carbide segments or replaceable inserts are also used specially for CI and
steels. TiN coating provide high life.

Product of Broaching
 Turn broaching

 The workpiece is rotated between centers, and the broach passes tangentially across
the bearing surfaces and remove material

 Broaching Machines

 Either pull or push the broaches and are made either horizontal or vertical.

 Forces required depend on workpiece material, total depth and width of cut, and
cutting speed.

 Broaching process parameters

 Cutting speeds range from 1.5m/min for high strength alloys to 15m/min for Aluminum
alloys

 Ceramic inserts may be used for finishing operations

 Design Considerations for Broaching

 Parts should be designed such that they can be clamped securely

 Blind holes, sharp corners, dovetail splines, and large flat surfaces should be avoided

 Chamfers are preferred over round corners
