CHAPTER:-1

INTRODUCTION
1.1 PROBLEM SUMMERY/INTRODUCTION/ABSTRACT:

A wind turbine is a device which converts the kinetic energy of wind into the
mechanical energy. There are two types of wind turbine: Horizontal Wind turbine and
Vertical wind turbine.

Horizontal axis wind turbine:

Horizontal axis wind turbines are convectional wind turbines and horizontal axis turbine
are not a unidirectional. As the wind changes direction, horizontal axis wind turbine are
must change direction with it. They must have some means for orienting the rotor with
respect to the wind. In this turbine the generator converts directly the wind which is
extracted from the rotor. The rotor speed as well as the power output can be controlled
by pitching the rotor blades along their longitudinal axis. An important advantage for
horizontal axis wind turbine is that blade pitching acts as a form of protection against
extreme wind conditions and over speed. Also the rotor blades can be shaped to achieve
maximum turbine efficiency by exploiting the aerodynamic lift to the maximum.

Small wind turbines may be used for a variety of applications including on or off-grid
residences, telecom towers, offshore platforms, rural schools, remote monitoring and
other purposes that require energy where there is no electric grid, or where the grid is
unstable.

NATIONAL RRENEWABLE ENERGY LABORATORY defines small wind turbines

as those smaller than or equal to 100 kilowatts. Small units often have direct drive
generators, direct current output, aero dynamic blades, lifetime bearings and use a vane
to point into the wind. New technologies of Small scale wind turbines installed within
the built environment is classified as micro generation technology. Small scale wind
turbines can be classified as horizontal axis wind turbines and vertical axis wind turbines.

To secure energy supply issues and address climate change, reductions of Greenhouse
Gas emission, development of new renewable technology, energy conservation, and
improve the efficiency of this renewable technology.

Among the renewable resources, wind energy is a relatively more important technology
with enormous potential for commercialization and mass production. The major
application of wind power is electricity generation from large grid-connected wind
farms. With the expansion of the power grid and the reduction of electricity scarce areas,
small-scale wind turbines are now being applied in some countries and in many fields,
such as city road lighting, mobile communication base stations, etc. New technologies of

 THE ARCHIMEDES WIND TURBINE:
The first thing is to what is Archimedes wind turbine and how its work. So, we first
explain the Archimedes rotor.

 PROBLEM SUMMERY:-
The Archimedes rotor blade turbine consists of several parts. A rotor or spiral shape
blade, which converts the straight movement of wind into the rotary movement. The
position of yawing system is most favourable. Generator, which converts the kinetic
energy of rotor into electric energy.

The Archimedes spiral wind turbine, which concept of a new horizontal axis wind speed
turbine, was designed using the Archimedes spiral principles. In conventional horizontal
axis wind turbine which is used the lift force to take power from wind energy, the
Archimedes spiral wind turbine uses both the lift and drag force and also the Archimedes
spiral wind turbine can utilize the kinetic energy from wind energy. The special design of
this spiral based blade will improve aerodynamic characteristics for small scale wind
turbines.

The advantages of the Archimedes spiral structure will be more in many circumstances,
such as around buildings, because the wind turbine operates at low wind speeds. The
wind direction in an urban environment changes constant but the Archimedes wind
turbine follows the wind direction automatically with the help of the yawing system by
passively controlled the drag force. Other advantages include low noise because of the
relatively low rotational speed. The disadvantage of the Archimedes wind turbine is the
high thrust force compared to a propeller-type conventional wind turbine.

 Archimedes spiral:-

Archimedes spiral is a transcendent curve that occurs when the point starts from the
origin, uniform visiting origin and uniformly moving away from him; distance of a point
from the origin of Archimedes coil is proportional to the associated pitch angle.

Abstract:
The present invention is a more simplified and efficient design of a turbine. The use of a
logarithmic curve pattern for blade design and an aerodynamic profile allows the present
invention to not only be versatile in its uses, but also much more efficient at gathering
forms of energy for different purposes.
