Task 2 Writing Prompts
IELTS WRITING SELF-REFLECTION
Evaluate your writing based on the following criteria.
IELTS band 7.5
Task 2
More and more companies produce goods in factories located in different countries
other than the location of the head office. Does this development have more
advantages or disadvantages?
A vast number of corporations across the globe have opted to produce their goods in
foreign countries. While there are some advantages of foreign production, there are
also some drawbacks to be taken into account. From my point of view, overseas
manufacturing can bring about more benefits for businesses than problems.
Despite the drawbacks, opening a production facility in a foreign country is
advantageous because companies can benefit from economies of scale and reach
new markets. With regards to the former, firms can lower labor costs which allows
them to channel more funding towards marketing, research and development, or
any other area that can help improve the company’s bottom line. Another main
benefit of overseas production is that businesses can expand their products to new
markets where competition might be low, resulting in an increment in sales and
market share. In other words, the demand of new products in new markets might be
high due to the lack of competition and supply. The iPhone, for example, is
manufactured in China where the local market lacks local smartphone suppliers.
Admittedly, there are some issues involved with foreign production. It brings
unemployment and backlash which might end up on strikes. For instance, Ford
employees wend on strake last week when the company announced to the media
plans to open a new production facility in the north of Mexico. Moreover, companies
which produce overseas can face instability and uncertainty in different business
areas over those that do not. In other words, a company will experience uncertain
political, cultural, and economic situations if they decide to manufacture abroad.
In conclusion, despite the fact that foreign production has some drawbacks, I believe
that opening a production facility abroad gives a company the opportunity to benefit
from economies of scale and new market expansion, which far ought weigh the
disadvantages.
