Assignment #2: Initial Program Design Components

1. Goals

Some goals for my novice patient is to strengthen their core and structural power through

body weight exercises and some machine workouts. My patient is novice because they

are just starting to workout 3 weeks ago and has trouble going to the gym everyday

because they have stated that they have been going around 2 times a week. They stated a

couple of their own goals that are to move from body weight training to light resistance

training by the end of the year and they want too be more self confident. They also want

to be considered intermediate by the end of the year oof training.

2. Assessment

To assess my patient I will use body weight exercises to see a baseline of their physical

ability. To do so I will make them do push-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups, and body-weight

squats.

3. Analysis of needs

The patient has good mobility and but has had a few injuries in his past. He broke his

wrist do to his sport and broke his ankle. Since recovering from them from years ago he

hasn’t had any problems with them. His injury potential was tested with a couple of

resistance exercises and he has low injury potential due to his scores and his ability top

complete the exercises.

4. Recommendations of acute program variables

a. Physiologically the patient needs muscular endurance priorities first and then needs

strength and power priorities second.

b. Should be working out 2-3 times per week, we will be using around 65% of their 1

RM because we will be focusing on muscular endurance first and will going for 12 of

more repetitions for 2-3 sets, but since they’re a new patient we will be sticking or

body weight and machine workouts to get form down.

c. The exercises our novice patient will be doing is a forward step lunge, box jumps, leg

extensions on a machine, leg curls on a machine and calf raises. The reason I choose

these workouts is because they are specific to his sport and they are some easy

exercises to get some basic movements down and most of them can be used with

body weight of even with weight on a bar after my patient gets the correct movements

down to move to more weight.

5. Special Population

A special population that I would look at is older adults, because this plan would chance

ever so slightly. The only thing I would change is probably more cardio exercises such

as the bike, a walk outside or even on the treadmill. I would have to consider all the

medications the patient is taking such as blood pressure medicines. If my patient is on

any form of medication that can change their heart rate or the thinness of their blood I

would have them ask their doctor if it’s ok for them to workout on such medicines and if

they can it would be light intensity and mostly cardio exercises because I don’t want to

put too much stress on their body and have a series health problem while they are

working out.
