Tourist Destinations in Fiji
“Tourism is an essential part in the Fiji’s economy as it earns the most amount of GDP before
sugar industry. Fiji has become a popular tourist destination in the world. Tourist destinations
comprises of the five A’s which are attractions, amenities, activities, accommodation and access.
This are also called destination mix. Thus, the destination mix plays a very vital role in the
increasing number of tourist every year. Hence, these destination mix has caught the eye of
tourists and has become a vacation idea. This essay will show the arrival of visitors from the
most common countries. Therefore, this essay will also discuss the examples and explanations on
the tourist attractions, amenities, activities, accommodation, and access, and wedding
destination, capital city as a tourist destination, vacation destination and with relevant
recommendations on how the nation has improved the tourism industry facts. ”

As stated above tourism has become the largest contributor to the Fijian economy, this past few

years has lead the tourism industry to another level and has recognized Fiji throughout the
world.”

Visitor Arrival by Country 6 Months to January 2017 And 2016

Above shows the arrival of visitors by countries coming to Fiji for the past six months.
“To begin with, tourist attraction is a place that people visit for the cultural inherent and built in
beauty. Thus, cultural inherent which is man-made where fire walking in beqa, takes place and
traditional art performance, example a Fijian warrior will escort the tourists to the village
meeting house (bure). Experience age-old customs and traditions, a customary welcome yagona
(kava) ceremony which will be performed for the tourists. This sacred ceremony is only
performed to visiting high chiefs or very important visitors which is mostly viewed in resorts.
Secondly, built in beauty are those that are naturally built by nature, for example, hot water
springs in sabeto, nadi and waterfalls. These tourist attractions which has increased the number
of tourist visiting Fiji every year. For instant as stated in the Fiji Times, (2017), ”

“The first part of the report deals with the primary strengths of Suva as a tourism destination as
identified by participants of the workshop. The following reflect the primary strengths identified
by the workshop attendees:
 Heritage including the museum, state house, churches, Thurston gardens;
 History associated with Suva as the capital city of Fiji.
 City life and the variety of available shopping, dining and night-life experiences.
 Recognizing Suva’s position as the major urban hub of the south pacific including its
multiculturalism, its major part facilities and being the regional hub for a variety of
international organization (i.e. the UN and many NGO’s): and
 Its major sporting infrastructure and its ability to host larger sporting and cultural events. ”

Moving on, amenities are those extra features available in hotels and resorts. Few of these
amenities has also been an attraction as it makes communication and transportation easier with
the use of roads, Wi-Fi, airport and rental services. These amenities helps to give a comfortable
environment and good services to the tourists. Amenities makes life more pleasant and
comfortable for people living in a hotel or resorts as the general services are provided. For
instance, according to the Fiji Times (2016),
“As one of Fiji’s premier companies providing unique products and amenities to the major hotels
and retail outlets locally as well as exporting their Fiji made products internationally, it is
particularly important that pure Fiji strives to be innovative and to incorporate inventive ways of
doing business.
Hence, the importance of E-commerce to drive business growth in existing and new markets
both locally and internationally.
An indication of this success is the recent announcement of two new awards which will be
released shortly”.
“Furthermore, tourist activities that are available in Fiji helps to engage tourists in various
activities which helps them to manage their time. Travelling is one effective way to see the
world, experience new cultures and meet local people at the same time. For many tourist
experiencing the local activities which are available are important as they get to spend time with
their families and met local [people and also interact with other tourist from different countries.
Few examples are the outdoor activities which includes Sigatoka River Safari, Dive way Fiji, Big
Bula Waterpark, Sleeping Giant Zip Line and the jewel of Fiji – day tours. Also they are some
indoor activities such as Museum Fiji, spa, Casino in the Grant Pacific Hotel and lastly cooking
classes organized by the hotels, like the one in Denarau Island Industrial Pack. These activities
gives a better idea to tourist as they will be able to comprehends he activities and see how
suitable it, is for they family.

“Moving on, accommodation are refers to where hotels and bures and villas which accommodate
tourist for day that they are in a particular country. Tourists often opt for villas as they travel
with their families and feel of the environment which is more comfortable as the facilities are
available. Some of the accommodations includes bures, and classified villas such as family villas
and couple villas and not forgetting the pleasure of the hotel rooms which are also classified in
many ways such as presidential suites where more amenities are available compared to the
normal suite.”

Fiji has accommodated many tourist but the most countries Fiji has had tourists from are
Australia and New Zealand as stated in the first half of the essay. For instance, according to the
Fiji Times (2014),
“It’s said Australia continued to provide Fiji with the most tourism flows, accounting for 48
percent of all arrivals over the past 5 years
“New Zealand id the second largest sources of visitors at a 16 percent shares”, it said.
“However, the report said there were structural changes occurring to the makeup of the Fiji
tourism sector, and those were likely to accelerate over the coming years”.
Secondly, advertising helps in accommodating tourist as it attracts tourists through the
advertisement. For example, online advertisement that includes packages deals, special price a
showing the amenities and the activities available at a particular hotel or resort.
In addition, the right or privilege to approach to a tourist destination, products and services are
accessible to all tourist regardless of their age or physical limitations, also the access to a
particular website or place and access to money exchange firms. Accessible tourist is about
making it easy for the tourist and others to enjoy tourism experience many researches show the
evidence that making basic adjustment to facility providing accurate information and understand
the need of tourist service and increase their quantity of enjoyment of all tourist both local and
international.
Thus few example of accessible websites are bookme.com where it provides many packages and
on particular service provided by different resorts and hotels and tripadvisor.com where it shows
features and reviews of tourist thus I give a better idea about the particular activity or resort and
hotel. Transportation helps tourist to travel from one place to another by the use of boats, cars,
and planes.
Access has played a very vital role in the tourism industry as it has given access to, any tourists
and local and also the many websites which has definitely increased the number of tourist
visiting Fiji every year.
To add on, Fiji has also became a wedding destinations for, any soon-to-be newlyweds. Thus,
most visit Fiji for great deal for the tourist. For instance, in Fiji Times (2015),

“According to tourism Fiji global public relations manager Patricia Mallam, many resort had also
capitalized on this idea, offering guests wedding or honeymoon packages to all to the auspicious
occasion
As a popular wedding destination Fiji has an abundance to a spectacular venues-from something
:

traditional to a spectacular venues-from something traditional to a gorgeous outdoor wedding in

an exotic garden.
Fiji is famous for its beachside ceremonies, providing the ultimate backdrop of white sand, Blue
Ocean and stunning given islands”.
Hence, Suva the capital city of Fiji is known to be a tourist destination where it has the largest
port. Thus, it is big enough for larger crew ships which leads tourists visiting the city. Due to this
tourists get attracted to the tropical country and some tourists also get attracted by the lovely
food that Fiji has to offer. When tourists visit the capital city, they get to find quality, affordable
and wide range of things which are usually available in the local shops such as handicrafts made
in Fiji which signifies the traditional culture in Fiji.
On the other hand, vacation destination are those that families often take a holiday every year.
Many tourist take vacation trips depending on their time and budget. Most tourists are from
Australia and they often spend the time in resort rather than hotel as they find resort more
peaceful and those sandy beaches with are the most common reason for visiting Fiji. As the
country has been ensuring that the tourist industry keeps on growing and developing as this has
bought a large growth in the GDP and also tourist has been a reason for development around Fiji
today. As the country is growing the development has also had a negative impact on country as
some of the negative impact are cultural exploitation and pollution. And yet it has increased the
economy of the nation.
Thus, Fiji has launched new travelling app to encourage more tourists to visit Fiji where this
helps tourists to view the packages and the activities provide my the country as a tourist
destination it also give a better idea to the Fiji government to see the response from the app and
also know how many people are interested in visiting Fiji. The Fiji times has shown more about
the app in the article. For instance the Fiji times (2016),”

"Fiji is more than just sun, sand and sea. We offer an array of world-class and unique activities
— from floating restaurants in the middle of the ocean on Cloud 9, to swimming with tiger
sharks in the Beqa Lagoon, or jet boating up the Sigatoka River visiting traditional Fijian
villages.
"Our research shows, what makes a destination is not just the 'room and bathtub' but more
importantly the enriching, unique and inspiring activities, the destination offers the international
visitor."
Chief Guest at the launch, Tourism Fiji CEO Matthew Stoeckel described the launch of the app
as an important tool for promoting Fiji as a tourist destination.
"Tourism Fiji commends Rosie Holidays, a Fijian family business, for developing the Feejee
Traveler mobile app, which embraces new technologies to make it easier for consumers to
purchase products," he said.
"It provides an exciting new platform to reach potential visitors and enhance the customer
experience of booking a holiday in Fiji."
The Feejee travelled app can review and browse a wide range of half-day and full-day activities,

car rental services and hotel transfers. Each activity also features a short video clip where
potential tourists can view, book and pay instantly with e-ticketing and receipt confirmation via a
secure payment gateway”.
To conclude, it is vital to realize the importance that tourism can present the country in terms of
the tourist destinations which is usually the five destination mix which include tourist attraction,
amenities, activities, accommodation and access. Tourist destinations are very important to
implement as this helps to attract tourists to the country and as a result the country’s economy
also rises as tourism is the major component in a country’s economy. The tourist destinations
should not be ignored as its extent and impact provides an advantage for the country as a whole.
People are able to know more about the country and the available destinations that are located in
the country that would increase the level of tourists coming to the country. Over the years, the
number of tourists visiting Fiji has shown an increase, according to the figures for 2010 up by
15% on the previous year. Looking at the official statistics, it can be said that the trend has been
up, and this trend can continue going up. The numbers for the first six months of 2011 are up by
around 10% on the first 6 months of 2010 (302,000 compared to 277,000 tourists which have
visited Fiji). People should take tourism seriously as this would help in improving the tourism
sector in the country as a whole.”
