THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Sun rises up but still in a deep slumber, feeling tired to get up to go to school. A

part of the student behaviour on consecrate things to be done as early as they can. New

lessons that some of them do not want to encounter for some reason that end up on losing

their interest on it. Somehow it deals with the hectic schedule for them to be late. In other

situation there are cases of involving themselves on their hobbies that spend a lot of time

until the Middle Watch of the clock.

Students are tardy for a variety of reasons but being late to class can become habit

that can have positive and negative effects on their success. Lateness may reflect on the

student personality on how they manage to be a responsible one. Being punctual helps to

accomplish things better, because our “Time is Gold”, and should not be wasted.

Background of the Study

A school is primarily an established institution that aims to educate learners

(Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary, 2010). School designed with the purpose of

bunging children from different families in the same roof or classroom, for them to learn.

Faces learning problems that may result from late to school such as truancy and inability

to read and consulting the tardiness can viewed as an outcome of laxity or system

breakdown (Prevetemode, 1991).

Being late may contribute to affect the academically performance of the students.

This may be the cause for them to be fail because seeing punctual especially to their first

subject really helps a student to complete the whole day learning. In this case lateness

violates the principles of punctuality and of it is not checked at the onset may become a

habit of the students with the individual involved that may have negative consequences.

Education is important to increase our ability skills and critical thinking to be like the

past society that we have, more of them are on the front rank of the world civilization

when it comes to education. From this educational system can be seriously harm as a

result of late-coming of the student especially in junior and senior high schools. In most

developing countries, tiredness and late is a major and continuous administrative problem

among high school learners (Egbule, 2004, Dafiaghor, 2011).

In some cases the factors that affect the students punctuality is transportation.

Transportation leads students to come late in school because of the distance and traffic

that is uncontrollable. In the other hand we can also consider the school activities

materials, projects that the students work overtime that cause them to sleep late and of

course to wake up late. In the present curriculum offer continuity and progression of

students learning but when they are late constantly they considered as absent that can

affect their academically performance. Not just tiredness, school works and transportation

will be the factors you can consider the hobbies of the students, example in social media

online gaming and etc. That makes them tired to get up for school. This study aims to

know and investigate the factors of students especially the selected students of Crecencia

Drusila Lopez Senior High School about being late on their first subject.
Theoretical Framework

To understand why the average middle/secondary school student is

chronically tardy, we must understand what the student is experiencing or expressing by

performing the tardy behaviour. According to some theorists the behaviour could be

conditioned upon stimuli prior to or resulting from the behaviour, while others may

suggest that it is based upon a lack of sleep, anxiety, low self-esteem or even depression.

There are many theorists with several varying theories. A few are discussed here.

Of course reasons for being late to class and other factors affecting the punctuality

of a student vary. There have been some theories that pointed out that tardiness is caused

by the person. Santillano (2010) stated that psychological theorists considered some

personality traits, including low self-esteem and “anxiety”, as triggering factors of

tardiness.

Oghuvbu collected the data from a sample size of 17, 417 Nigerian respondents

from 2005 - 2006. The sample was made up of 20 principles and 50 students and teachers

data.

The study revealed that the causes of lateness among the secondary students in

Nigeria were going late to bed because of watching films and home movies, resulting in

waking up late. Another factor that could affect the punctuality of a student is the

response of the teachers to tardy students Sprick and Daniels (2007) stated that the range

of the teachers them to office. These variations lead students to become tardy.
Research Paradigm
Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine how the following factors affect the tiredness of the

students.

1. Profile of the respondents

a. Sex

b. Age

c. Distance in kilo meter between residential and school

d. Hours allotted in sleeping

Hypothesis

Null - Frequently late of students will fall to be successful with their jobs.

Alternative - Being frequently late is not a basis for being successful in jobs.
Scope and Delimitations of the Study

This study focuses on preventing tardiness among all selected students of

Technical Vocational Livelihood students, in Crecencia Drusila Lopez Senior High

School. The researchers choose them as a subject because half of the population of

Technical Vocational Livelihood students are late especially on flag ceremonies, and also

on their first subject. All of the Grade 11 and 12 Academics students are not included for

this research. The researchers wanted to study the factors (Traffic, Too much involved on

their hobbies, Fear, and tardiness)

This research was started on July of SY. 2019-2020 and is expected to be finished

by October. This researcher used Quantitative research and the design is a Descriptive

research is defined as a research method that describes the characteristics of the

population and phenomenon.

A researcher-made a questionnaires they developed by the researchers and has

validated by the research adviser. After validation of the questionnaires will be then given

to the respondents to answer data, will then be collected, tallied and later analyzed.
Significance of the Study

This research aims to give relevance to the following:

STUDENTS. This research will hopefully raise awareness to the students and

help them realize the impact of tiredness on themselves.

ADMINISTRATION. The result of this study will serve as the basis for the

institutions to plan and implement programs in tiredness. This will be their guide to

create techniques on minimizing tiredness among students.

EMPLOYEES. This study will also motivate them to wake up early because

being punctual is very important to accomplish things to make their job efficient.

COMMUNITY. The enlightenment of many researchers will benefit not only the

learners but also the community as well. Putting all these findings can raise awareness to

the people. The community can also implement programs.

FUTURE RESEARCHERS. This research hopefully will open doors for more

students that will inspire other researchers who studying and finding solutions to the

existing dilemmas in an institution especially the tiredness of students.

Chapter 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

The review of related literature focused on the tardiness of the students of

Southern Christian College. Being always late in class can affect the learning of a student

as well as she / he can disturb other students and also the teacher who are having a class.

According to breeze et al. (2010) lateness is synonymous to “Tardiness”, which implies

being slow to act or being slow to respond, thus not meeting up with proper or usual

timing. Habitual tardiness can also be learned from other members of the family

especially from the older ones. Film watching at night can also affect the tardiness of a

students.

According to Nakpodia and Dafiaghor (2011), waking up late in the morning are

one of the most factors of lateness why they go to school late is because of heavy traffic,

household chores, vehicle breakdowns and lack of responsibility are some reasons why

students arrive late to class. One of the most recurring and most “Frustrating problem”

that the school nowadays are having tardiness (Sprick and Daniels, 2007). if a student

asleep late at night she / he forget that on the next day she / he need to be on the school.

Parents that untimely tasks and commands are also reasons that a student come

late to school. The distance between the student’s home from school or the school’s

location is also considered as the cause of tardiness. Lack of firm and consistent policy

can also encourage the students to come late at school since there is no consequences

attached to lateness or tardiness. A student is considered tardy when she / he is not

present when the school bell ring when the teacher start to give instruction for the first

subject in the morning class.

According to Weade (2004), defined tardiness “being late for any measurable

length of time past the stated or schedule start the school. Our study intends to find out

the tardiness of the Senior High School students in Southern Christian College and the

reasons and factors that may influence this tardiness.

Being always present in class and getting to school on time are two of the crucial

determining factors of a student’s success, not just as a student but as a person who will

be managing his/her own life in the future. Given the importance of being punctual, this

study aims to explore and find out the factors that affect the punctuality of UP students.

In this chapter, we will be discussing about the background of our study.

It includes facts about the tardiness, the different factors that causes it and its

effect to the students as students and as bearer of their own lives in the future. From

reliable research materials like online journal and research papers, we will provide some

facts and theories from authors, teachers and notable people in order to have a concrete

justification of our study.

First, we will give a definition of tardiness and present some theories and facts

about it. Next, we will give a discuss he various factors that causes the students to come

to school late, the psychological theories, the observation of the teacher and personal

reasons of the students. Lastly, the effects of tardiness to students, not just to

himself/herself but studies, sometimes, it’s not also the act of the student that leads to

his/her tardiness. The heavy traffic, the teachers, the school surroundings and policies

may also serve as influence to the tardiness of students. Many studies have also shown

the effects of tardiness on the students, the teachers, the school and the society.
According to these studies, the tardiness of a student consumes his/her learning

time as well as disturbs other students and teachers. The tardy student also poses as a

threat to the school as an educational and professional institution and the student may be

one of the less productive members of the society. A lot of studies as well gave

testimonies to effective remedies on tardiness. These studies promoted integration of

personality development and interdisciplinary programs into school curriculum to aid

students enhance positive behaviour and personality leading to the decrease of tardiness.

Our study intends to find out the tardiness of UP Cebu students and the reasons and

factors that may influence this tardiness.
