k r Dapitan City Ecotourism: Status, Potential and Option for Inclusive Local Development

1) Identify areas for ecotourism in the selected coastal and inland barangays of Dapitan City as to
be elicited by the inhabitants.

Among the many barangays which has a potential for ecotourism development the researcher
selected 3 areas for the study site, that has abundant natural resources that has a potential for
ecotourism development, to name the following;

Barangay Sinonoc- this barangay has seven smallest political units called purok, These are
Purok Sampungan, Busay, Kindes, Sinangkapan, Lubi, Summer Bridge and Nangka. All this purok
have their own natural resources that can be develop, like in Purok Sampungan is basically a cliff
that circumscribe the baragaya adjoining barangay talisay where Rizal Park is situated, the local
residents of this purok takes pride of their skills in making rice cake and cassava and some of the
residents in this area collects tuba. Tuba or Coconut Wine is is an alcoholic beverage created
from the sap of various species of palm tree such as the palmyra, date palms, and coconut

purok holds one of dapitans finest water resources called sinonoc falls as describe by the
resident the falls had been their washing and bathing area since they could remember. Many
stories of mystery were told by folks, and according to some of the inhabitants in this area the
falls is called busay enkantada. Aside from mythical stories present in this areas for sure tourist
visiting the place would love to indulge themselves in some of the barangays local delicacy the
salbaro a locally-made bread without yeast content, which is a common snack sold in the area.
Purok Sinangkapan- this purok is endue with entrepreneurial activity. Specifically, these includes
aquatic area devoted for fishponds, an oyster farm and a piggery. Cockfighting farm is also
present in this purok. Among others this purok also manage to make yema balls that is being
labeled and distributed in some of the local stores and groceries in dapitan, suman is also
famously made in this barangay specially in this purok. Purok Lubi-this purok got its name from
the coconut tree since this area has plenty of coconut trees and men in this purok are tuba
gatherers. Purok Summer Bridge- this purok is where we can find the so called Kampo-ung Cliff
or One inhabitant narrated that Kampu-ong is short hand for Kampo sa mga Unggoy or Camp of
the Monkeys. In this purok we can also find a firing range, some residents of this area are
government employees others are fishers, carpenters, and tuba gatherers. In this purok the
barangay hall is located fronting the hall is the sinonoc elementary school. Barangay Nangka-
most residents in this purok are workers in the labor industry other than farming.

Saging.the names of the puroks are derived from a plants name since this barangay has plenty
of talisay tree, bombil, lumboy and sanging. Purok Lumboy- this purok is often the envious
among the beaches in dapitan, white sand beaches untouched nature in its surrounding a cave
that is waiting to be explored for those travelers that seeks adventure, aside from the adrenalin

2) Compute cost effective ecotourism programs among alternatives and:

In the matrix shown below are the assessment or planned intervention of the local residents of
the barangay which has potential ecotourism development, this planned are what the residents
suggested to make or create, put up in the area so as to develop the natural resources in the
area and provide sustainability in the barangays natural resources. For Barangay Sinonoc

For barangal baylimango langub ka-bikbik ranked top 1 and the local residents said that it only needs
some essential caving gears and equipment for the tourist. For the expensive part of this area as well is
the installation of pathway along the mangroves which actually ranked last again, since the local
residents can not spend much for the development of the area so they need the help of the local LGU,
The researcher then asked the help of engineer Clyde Padao for the costing of the infrastructure to be
place in the said areas. As for the total amount to be place for budget.

3) Develop a framework to make relevant policy measures for the development of ecotourism in
Dapitan City.

Carefully planned and operated ecotourism sites, especially if it is village-based and includes
local participation .As for the local residents of the selected barangays of dapitan city, together
with JRMSU and the local LGUs, aim to conserve the resources, especially biological diversity,
and maintain sustainable use of resources, which will bring ecological experience to travelers,
conserve the ecological environment and gain economic benefit,
