Hemingway uses symbols to express his point of view and the situation in
which the characters are put in. Manelin symbolizes Santiago’s youth. When the
old man is tired he says, “I wish the boy was here.” And “I wish I had the boy”.
The boy is infact a lost youth of old man. When he expresses his desire to have the
boy with him he musters up his courage. But when he realizes that he is alone, he
cries, “You have not got the boy…”
Man stands for the courage and determination. Man fights against she
adverse circumstances and eventually succeeds whether the victory is physical or
moral. According to him, “Man can be destroyed but not defeated.” The sea
symbolizes “Life” and the waves of the sea symbolize the hardships and
difficulties of man. “The Fish” in the novel is man’s desires who is always after
them to fulfill. “The sharks” in the novel symbolize the natural faces who always
try to deprive the man the fruit of his efforts. They also symbolized the adverse
circumstances, which are on the way towards victory. The recollections of
DiMaggio and the memories of his hand wrestling also serve a symbolic purpose.
A man has to fight the battle of life alone but there are certain props he needs in
his cbb of life. “Birds flight” before the skiff and over the certain part symbolizes
the beam of hope and hope for achieving goal.

island? (Words=250)
Ans: The dreaming of lions is great significance in the old man’s adventurous life.

adventure. In his old age the dreams of lions revived in him the same adventurous
spirit and youthful energy:. In his dream lions coming to seashore as he sat on his
village bed. They served him as a symbol of pride, power, energy and action. They
reminded him his brutish power, he once possessed by which he had defeated the

his confidence. The writer tells that in his old age he did not dream of storms, big
