Kirti Chakra 2019
About the award: It is awarded for valour, courageous action or self-sacrifice away from the field of
battle. It is awarded to civilians as well as military personnel, including posthumous awards. It is
second in order of precedence of peacetime gallantry awards which comes after Ashoka Chakra and
before Shaurya Chakra. It was established as the “Ashoka Chakra, Class II” by the President of India on
4 January 1952 (with effect from 15 August 1947). The statutes were revised and the decoration
renamed on 27 January 1967.
Medal design: The medal is made of standard silver and is circular in shape. The green ribbon is
divided into three equal parts by two orange vertical lines.
Awardees: Sapper Prakash Jadhav of the Rashtriya Rifles (posthumously) and Harshpal Singh, Dy
Commandant of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were awarded Kirti Chakras 2019.
Vir Chakra 2019
About the award: It is awarded for acts of gallantry in the presence of enemy, whether on land or at
sea or in the air. It was established by the President of India on 26 January 1950 (with effect from 15
August 1947). It is given only to Military personnel.

Medal design: The medal is made of standard silver with a five-pointed heraldic star embossed on it.
The star shall have in the centre a Chakra and within the Chakra shall be a domed centre piece bearing
the gilded State Emblem. The words ‘VirChakra’ is embossed both in Hindi and English on the reverse
and the two versions are separated by two lotus flowers.
Awardee: Wing Commander of Indian Air Force (IAF) Abhinandan Varthaman, who downed an
enemy jet during an aerial combat with Pakistan in February 2019 and was held captive for 3 days,
was conferred the Vir Chakra 2019, India’s third-highest war time gallantry medal.

i. About the award: It is awarded for valour, courageous action or self-sacrifice while not engaged in
direct action with the enemy. It is awarded to civilians as well as military personnel, sometimes
posthumously. It is third in order of precedence of peacetime gallantry awards and comes after the
Ashoka Chakra and Kirti Chakra. It precedes the Sena Medal.

About the award: It is awarded to members of the Indian army, of all ranks. It can be awarded for
gallantry or it can also be for distinguished service carried out by any soldier, not in the face of the

Nao Sena Medals 2019

i. About the award: It is a gallantry award for servicemen in the Indian Navy. It was established by
the President of India on 17 June 1960.
ii. Medal design: The medal is pentangular in shape, with curved sides made of standard silver. The
mounting shall is a fixed ring attached to a metal stripe 3mm wide ornamented with Ashoka leaves. It
has embossed on its obverse the Naval Crest. On its reverse, it has a trident within a circle and rope
and the inscription “Nao Sena Medal” in Hindi, embossed along the upper rim. The riband is navy blue
colour with a white thin silver stripe down the centre.

ii. Medal design: A four-armed silver star with the points shaped like lotus blooms. In the centre, the

Key Highlights:
i. The Mata Vaishno Devi shrine, a religious pilgrimage atop the Trikuta hills in Reasi district of Jammu &
Kashmir (J&K) was adjudged as best Best Swachh Iconic Place in India 2019 for overall improvement in
sanitation by undertaking initiatives such as water kiosks, reverse vending machines, installation of kill waste
machine, etc.
President Kovind bestowed the award to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB).
Other awards: In 2017, the shrine got a special award from the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation
for retaining 2nd position, behind only to the Golden Temple. In 2018, the shrine was also declared as the
cleanest religious place by the India Today Group.
ii. The Victorian-era railway station & UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organization )World Heritage Site ,the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai,
Maharashtra has been awarded the Best swachh iconic place in India 2019 under Swachh Bharat Mission
Initiative such as accomplishment of the action plan, involvement of stakeholders in execution of action plans,
fund leverage, fund utilization, cleanliness in peripheral area, etc.
The award has been received by Ministry of Railways jointly along with BrihanMumbai Municipal
Corporation(BMC) and CSR partner SBI (State Bank of India) Foundation.
iii. Indian Railways got selected as the best ministry for implementation of Swachhata action plan for 2018-19.
Shri Vinod Kumar Yadav, Chairman, Railway Board has received the award. Indian Railways had spent about
3000 crore on cleanliness campaign on its various properties during 2018-19.
As per Cleanliness Ranking Survey for 2018, three best stations Jodhpur, Jaipur & Tirupati were also awarded.
iv. Addressing the event, President stated that cleanliness as a pathway to success and also an essential
condition for success of government’s initiative ‘Jal Jeevan Mission’.
He also underscored the construction of toilets across India under Swachh Bharat Mission that helps in
maintaining dignity of women as well as their empowerment.
v. Over 1300 swachhata champions including school children, NCC cadets, volunteers from NSS and NYKS,
swachhagrahies, sarpanches, representatives from States and UTs, central government ministries and media
persons attended the event.

Pune headquartered Bajaj Finance overtook SBI in market capitalization

On October 1, 2019 Bajaj Finance Ltd based at Pune, Maharashtra, has surpassed India’s largest bank, the State
Bank of India (SBI) for the first time, in terms of market capitalization. The market capital of Bajaj Finance stood at
Rs 2.32 lakh crore while it was Rs 2.28 lakh crore for SBI.
President of India presented “VayoshreshthaSamman – 2019” to Senior Citizens & Institutions in New Delhi
On October 3, 2019 the president of India Shri Ram NathKovind presented “VayoshreshthaSamman – 2019” in
New Delhi, as an honour to senior citizens and institutions for their services towards the cause of the elderly persons
to mark the October 1 annual commemoration of ‘International Day of older Persons’, at a function organised by the
Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment presided by Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Shri
ThaawarchandGehlot.

i. VayoshreshthaSamman: Instituted by the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, this scheme of awards
gradually upgraded to National Awards status, for institutions. The Awards are given to institutions /organisations /
individuals from any part of the country with nominees invited from from governmental as well as non-

Shiv Nadar from HCL tops EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2019
According to the Edelgive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2019 which was released on October 14, 2019, by Hurun
India, HCL (Hindustan Computer Limited) Technologies Chairman Shiv Nadar emerged as India's most generous
philanthropists who contributed Rs 826 crore during the financial year 2018-19 (FY19). As per Companies Act 2013,
it is mandatory for entities having net worth of rupees five hundred crore or more, or turnover of rupees one
thousand crore or more or a net profit of rupees five crore or more during any financial year, to devote 2 percent of
their profit to CSR (Corporate social responsibility).
Kerala's nun Mariam thresia receives the title of 'Saint', 93 years after her death
Indian nun Mariam Thresia Mankidiyan of Kerala and four others (English Cardinal John Henry Newman, Swiss
laywoman Marguerite Bays, Brazilian Sister Dulce Lopes and Italian Sister Giuseppina Vannini) declared Saints by
Pope Francis (head of the Catholic Church) at a grand ceremony at the Vatican City, a city-state surrounded by Rome,
Italy. The title was conferred on Thresia 93 years after her death. Born in Thrissur, Kerala on 26 April 1876, Sister
Thresia died on 8 June 1926 at the age of 50.

Health minister Harsh Vardhan, felicitated 2018-19 Kayakalp awards in New Delhi
Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare(MoHFW) felicitated the 2019 Kayakalp awards in
New Delhi during the national felicitation ceremony of Kayakalp awardees (2018-19). All India Institute of Medical
Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi won the first prize of Rs 3 crores under the government’s Kayakalp scheme for 2018-19 in
central government hospitals ‘A’ category.Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research
(JIPMER), Puducherry was the runner up and was awarded Rs 1.5 cores. The Kayakalp award is felicitated to public

24th Busan International Film Festival for 2019 held in Busan, South Korea
24th Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) was held at Busan Cinema Center in Busan, South Korea from October
3- 12, 2019. A total of 299 films from 85 countries were screened (118 world premieres and 27 international
premieres) at the event. 18 films from India were screened at the festival.

PV Sindhu ranked 13th in Forbes list of world’s highest paid women athletes for 2019; Serena Williams tops
In the Forbes list of the highest-paid women athletes 2019, Indian badminton player PV (Pusarla Venkata) Sindhu
was ranked 13th with a total earning of $5.5 million, comprising total prize money of $500,000 and endorsements
worth $5 million. She is India’s most marketable female athlete having endorsements with Bridgestone, JBL,
Gatorade, Panasonic, and more. The list was topped by Serena Williams (Tennis- America) with earnings of $29.2
million followed by Naomi Osaka (Tennis- Japan) and Angelique Kerber (Tennis- Germany).
US astronauts Christina Koch and Jessica Meir creates history by embarking on the first ever all- female
spacewalk
The United States (US) Space agency, National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) astronauts Christina
Koch (40) & Jessica Meir (42) have created history by taking a walk outside the International Space Station (ISS).
This is the 1st time that only a team of women astronauts has walked outside the ISS. The spacewalk is known as
extra-vehicular activity (EVA).
Delhi students’ “Rakshak” and “VisionAir” apps won 2019 Marconi Society’s Celestini Programme awards
A team of students from Bharti Vidyapeeth College of Engineering, Delhi, won the 2019 Marconi Society’s Celestini
Programme awards for their innovative solutions for addressing challenges of women’s safety and air pollution. The
team won first prize of $1500 for the app “Rakshak” that sends an SOS (save our souls) alert based on audio snippets
in case of an emergency. Another team from the same college has won the second prize of $500 for the app
“VisionAir” that uses photos of the horizon taken from a smartphone to estimate the air quality.

festival 2019 held in Wales, UK
Nawazuddin Siddiqui (45), an Indian actor, known for his works in Hindi cinema , has been awarded the prestigious
Golden Dragon Award at the Cardiff International Film Festival (CIFF ) 2019 held in historical Pierhead Building in
the heart of Cardiff Bay, Wales, UK (United Kingdom) from 24th - 27th October, 2019. Siddiqui was given this award
by counsel general of Wales, UK, Mick Antoniw, for his commendable contribution to the cinema world.
