Our country is known to have a very colorful and fascinating history. This includes literary works
by our renowned authors like, Dr. Jose Rizal, Francisco Balagtas, Blas Ople, Nick Joaquin, Bob Ong and
many more. These people primarily wrote what they have experienced and what they had in mind, but,
either way, it imparted a significant role in our lives today. However, these past few months, the state of
our beloved literature is currently facing its downfall, slowly but surely -- or so we thought.
It has been recently ruled by the Supreme Court that Filipino and Philippine literature may now be
excluded from the list of core subjects in college. While many of our countrymen believe that it is just
right to do so, I think it is not yet the dead end for this matter. According to a survey conducted by
TheLasallian, the official publication of De La Salle University, many of their students have shown greater
preference on foreign books over local literary works on our country. One of the many reasons is that
they think, Filipino literature is a bit cliché or baduy. One would think that we should be the ones to
adjust in order to satisfy everyone’s choice and to remove this stigma on Filipino literature being a little
too predictable. Well, for me, it’s not entirely wrong -- but neither it is right. According to Mr. Eros
Atalia, an author, and I quote, “you can’t reach every single person with what you write”. He has a point,
though. In fact, the most recent National Book Development Board Readership survey showed that the
most read non-academic book by the participants were mostly in Filipino language. This supports the
fact that maybe, just maybe, Filipinos still do care about our literature and do not choose foreign ones
over our own, most of the time.
With that being said, I am standing here before you to assert my proposal of adding another 3-
unit Literature course to the present SHS curriculum. I believe that by doing so, students will be able to
enhance their writing skills and conceivably help improve and remove the stigma about Filipino
literature as the cliché type. By considering this proposal, we will be able to:
This will all be made possible with the help of DepEd and CHED, for the ideal age to start
enhancing writing skills is mostly on high school students and college students. With the help of these
groups, information will be disseminated conveniently. Most of all, I set out my proposal and opinions
about his matter to spare Filipino literature from being totally forgotten by the future generations.
