Note from the teacher:

March 20, 2020

Dear Families,

Thank you for sharing resources you’ve found and pictures on what they’ve been up to.
During this crazy time, I want to do my best to keep the class connected. I will continue
to post and share resources that I come across to help you find what works for your child
and family. I know they can easily get “bored” or become couch potatoes playing the same
video game all day. My friend’s son is 3 and dad just taught him how to change oil in a car
because he ran out of ideas haha. Please don’t feel that you need to check everything out.
There are a lot of great resources out there as everyone is pitching in during this time.
Many sites that usually require membership are waiving their costs. So definitely take
advantage!

We want to try to keep the learning fun and engaging. And to make sure it doesn’t take up
their whole day or add more work/stress for you. Some kind of routine is key. Make a daily
schedule with your child that they can follow. I have one posted on the back wall of the
classroom and the days I don’t get a chance to update it in the morning I notice a
difference. Make sure it is balanced with some educational time, creative time, family
time, life skills, and physical exercise. [Oh and don’t forget to include some of those live
videos (i.e. Michigan Science Center FB, Cincinnati Zoo FB, etc.).] There’s a sample
schedule in the 4th grade district packet (page 3).

I’m hoping this document will help organize all this information and decrease the amount of
messages I send in the upcoming weeks. As always, feel free to message me any questions.
I’m here to help. And most importantly, take advantage of all this family time.

By the way, great time to look through pictures on the class site (‘pictures’ tab) and save
any that you’d like. To Save: Click image, then right click the image, choose save image as.

Idea: Maker Space

Maker Spaces provide hands-on, creative ways to encourage students to design,
experiment, build and invent as they deeply engage in science, engineering and tinkering.
They provide a space and time for students to build, explore, fail and retry, and share
their ideas with others.

To get started: just gather random supplies from the house and let them start creating.
Could be leftover craft supplies, recycled items, broken pieces or extra pieces from games
they don’t use. Throw them in a box or on a table and let their creativity run!

Reading/Writing Ideas:
Reading 20 minutes a day ideas:
*Read under the table.
*Make a blanket fort and flashlight read inside.
*Read out loud to someone at home or a stuffed animal.
*Read out loud in your silliest voice. Think teeny-tiny mouse voice, deep giant voice, or a
robot voice.

Reading Passages- TFK or Scholastic (‘Educational Links’ tab)

*Read a passage each day. Talk about it with your family. What did you already know
about the topic? What did you learn?
Try this-
*1st time reading passage: Find and underline any unknown words. Use a dictionary, the
footnotes or a family member to help you.
2nd time reading the passage: What was the main idea of the passage? What evidence can
you find to support the main idea?
3rd time reading the passage: Why is this information important? What do you want to
learn more about?
*Create an illustration or diagram with information from the passage.
Try This:
Create a building. Use Legos, craft materials, or recyclables. Then, write about your
creation.
*Write an Informational essay teaching your readers “how-to” build a structure.
*Write a Narrative story. Tell the story of the people who live in your structure.
*Write a Persuasive essay. Convince the mayor of the town not to demolish the building.
Share 3 convincing reasons with evidence that your building should remain standing.

Try the 30 Day LEGO Challenge! No LEGOS at home? Use other craft materials or
recyclables. (*Maker Space)
