Adolescent Discussion
In comparison, the adolescent and adult exam are very similar. It is suggested that a
head to toe physical exam be conducted alone, without the parent, that ends with a
quick, thorough assessment of the genitals (Jarvis, 2020).
Acne is a common skin finding for adolescents due to changes in sebaceous gland
function. Assess the severity, duration and at-home treatment for the adolescent’s acne.
Even skin tone, that is smooth, warm and dry to the touch, with good turgor is a normal
finding (Jarvis, 2020)
Nails should be smooth and curved or flat. Appropriate hygiene is observed with clean
nail edges. Capillary refill with 2 seconds demonstrates normal circulation (Jarvis, 2020)
New hair growth is expected in the pubic and axillary areas, (Marshall and Tanner,
1970).
Eczema is a common skin lesion noted in children. Eczema causes great itching and
may affect sleep and mood (Jarvis, 2020).
TANNER STAGING
Males are staged by growth of pubic hair and genital development. A physical
assessment is required to see where this particular patient falls (Marshall & Tanner,
1970).
