Installation Procedure
Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before assembly, thoroughly clean all parts in cleaning fluid.
Allow the parts to air dry. Do not use wiping cloths or rags to dry parts. Lint may be deposited on the
parts which may cause trouble. Inspect all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new parts for
replacement. Dirt and other contaminants can damage the precision component. Perform assembly
procedures on a clean work surface. Keep components covered and protected at all times.
Note: Check the O-ring seals, the gaskets, and the seals for wear or for damage. Replace the
components, if necessary.
NOTICE
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

The 300 family excavators have been well-received by customers worldwide. A Series machines created a
breakthrough, and the B and C series successfully introduced new technologies and maintained the tradition
initiated with the A Series. The D Series incorporates innovations that have been introduced to improve the
competitiveness of Cat® Hydraulic Excavators. International marketing, design and manufacturing teams
developed D Series excavators based on the surveys of customer needs and market and product-trend research.
Caterpillar® is pleased to introduce the 320D as a direct replacement of the 320C. Since the introduction
of the 300 family excavators, they have become the industry standard for a large variety of applications.
The new 320D builds upon and further enhances the attributes that the C Series excavators delivered.

Better Serviceability
The 320D is equipped with the C6.4 Engine with ACERT Technology. The C6.4 replaces the 3066 TA
found in the 320C. The ACERT Technology introduces a series of evolutionary, incremental improvements
that provide breakthrough engine technology. The building blocks of ACERT Technology are fuel delivery,
air management and electronic control. ACERT Technology optimizes engine performance while meeting
the US EPA Tier 3 engine emission regulations for off-road applications.
Engine Performance
Net power for the 320D is 110 kW (148 hp), which represents a 7% increase in power. The additional
power can provide faster cycle times, particularly in tough digging conditions.
The ADEM A4 electronic control module manages fuel delivery to get the best performance per unit of fuel
consumed. The engine management system provides flexible fuel mapping, allowing the engine to respond
quickly to varying application needs. It tracks engine and machine conditions while keeping the engine
operating and peak efficiency.
With the increases system pressure and the geometry changes to the stick, the 320D offers up to 5% more
force than the 320C. The additional forces can lead to faster cycle times when digging in tightly compacted
materials or soil.
The 320D offers additional lift capacity over the 320C because of three main contributors:
• Increased system pressure from 34.3 Mpa (4,974 psi) to 35 Mpa (5,076 psi).
• Addition of Heavy Lift, which increases pressures an additional 3% to 36 Mpa (5,220 psi).
• Geometry changes to the stick that gives the 320D better leverage at certain lift points.
Improved Controllability
The 320D offers a new generation main valve stem that improves combined movements. This leads to:
In order to compare the true capabilities each machine, the 320C and 320D were put through a series of
trenching and truck loading tests conducted in October 2006 at the Peoria Proving Grounds.
Test Descriptions
• A trenching test was conducted by digging a single bucket-wide, 1219 mm (48 in), trench approximately
2.9 m (9 ft 6 in) and approximately 30.5 m (100 ft) long. Depths of the trenches were measured at several
intervals to ensure accuracy of the trench depths.
• Truck loading tests consisted of trenching from compacted soil loading on-highway tandem axle dump
trucks. Two truck loading tests were conducted, one at 90° to the machine, same level, and the second
swing 180°, also same level loading.
• Cycle times were recorded using a computer program that was specifically designed for productivity
tests.
• Fuel was measured using portable day tanks that were weighed prior to the test and upon completion
of the test. All results are based on 60-minute work hours.
• The material was a well-compacted mixture of topsoil and clay with a material density of 1100 kg/m3
(2,400 lb/yd3).
• Machines were alternated after each run to ensure consistency of the field.
• Each machine was similarly equipped — Reach Boom with R2.9 (9 ft 7 in) Stick.
• The same bucket was used on each machine in order to ensure a fair comparison of machine capability.
• Caterpillar expert operator was used to conduct all tests.

Conclusions
• Due to the higher horsepower (+7%) and greater breakout forces (+5%), the 320D was able to show a
6% advantage in the trenching tests.
• Cycle times for the 320D were 4% slower in these tests, which was due to the 320D spending more time
in the cut and having an 8% greater fill factor.
• Fuel consumption on the 320D was 4% higher than the 320C, but overall efficiency was a 2% advantage
mor the 320D. This means that for every unit of material moved per unit of fuel consumed, the 320D
was able to outperform the 320C.

Conclusions
• The 320D L was able to show a 6% productivity advantage over the 320C L. As this test consisted of
trenching from compacted soil, the higher horsepower and breakout forces attributed to the production
advantage for the 320D L.
• Cycle times showed for the 320D L were 5% faster than the 320C L. The biggest impact on the cycle
time was in the load portion where the 320D L was able to get through the cut quicker and was able to
carry 3% more material.
• Fuel consumption measured in this test was approximately the same for both machines. This led to an
overall fuel efficiency advantage of 6% for the 320D L over the 320C L.
Operator Comments
• “The 320D L was very quick and responsive, yet very controllable.”

Conclusions
• The 320D L was able to show an 8% productivity advantage in this test over the 320C L, again
attributable to the higher power and increased forces.
• The 320D L exhibited 8% faster cycle times than the 320C L, with a majority of the cycle time advantage
coming in the load portion of the cycle.
• Fuel consumed in this test was nearly identical, which led to an overall fuel efficiency advantage of
7% for the 320D L over the 320C L. The ACERT Technology on the C6.4, with its electronic control
for the fuel injection has optimized fuel consumption for the 320D L.
Operator Comments
• “The improvements made on the 320D L give it a noticeable performance advantage that you can feel,
in all applications.”
ACERT Technology
The Caterpillar long–term emission solution is one of the most tested and proven technologies. It has been
tested in thousands of on-highway trucks logging hundreds of millions of miles as well as being proven on
thousands of off-road equipment models in grueling applications all over the world.
Because of the increased forces offered on the 320D, the power link has been redesigned to be more durable
and robust. The power link now includes an integrated lift eye that makes using a proper sized shackle
when lifting objects easier. Lifting from this position gives you the best lift performance because it lowers
the load point, allowing more use of the boom cylinders.
The pin sizes on the Mass Excavation Configuration have been increased from 80 mm to 90 mm at the
bucket to stick pin joints. Because forces have increased by 8%, the pins were increased to meet the
additional stress created.

Mass CB2 90/90 386 (15)
The difference between the B1 linkage for the 320D and the B linkage for the 320C is the increased stroke
of the stick cylinder. B Family buckets that were compatible with the reach configuration on the 320C will
be able to be used on the 320D.
The function of this system is to relieve track tension when excess material builds up between the sprocket
and the track. Excess tension can lead to final drive or idler breakage as well as undercarriage frame bending.
To address this, the stroke of the system has been increased by 26%, which allows for sufficient clearance
between track and sprocket, preserving undercarriage components.
Straight Bearings
In order to better absorb the stresses put on the front linkage, the bearings for the boom foot and boom to
stick have been replaced with straight bearings. This allows more surface contact area and allows less pin
movement while under loaded conditions.
There are four hydraulic auxiliary options can be ordered factory installed:
• Single-function circuit — ideal for tools that require one-way flow and two pump output, such as
hammers, vibratory plate compactors. Control of the tool is by a foot switch located on the left side of
the cab floor. Flows can be set through the monitor.
• Double-function circuit — ideal for tools that require two-way flow and one pump output, such as
thumbs and non-rotating shears or grapples. Two control options are available, either modulated foot
pedal (right-hand side) or joystick controls (on/off, no modulation). Flows can be set through the monitor.
• New Tool Control System without medium pressure — this system allows you to choose between one
or two-way non-rotating tools, one or two pump flow. Controlled through a four-button joystick. Flows
and pressures can be set through the monitor.
• Tool Control System with medium pressure — this system can run all of the tools listed above as well
as rotating tools, and is controlled through a four-button joystick with modulated slider switches. Flows
and pressures can be set through the monitor.
• Choice of preset Cat Work Tools — saves time setting up flows and pressures.
Auxiliary hydraulic kits distributed through Cat Work Tools have been redesigned to mirror factory-installed
options, including the Tool Control System. This also includes upgradeable kits, which can upgrade your
hammer or thumb circuit to the Tool Control System.
More Attachments
The 320D offers the most options available to equip your 320D to best match your customer’s application

a significant theft deterrent. You can also program the hours that the machine can be operated.
Product Link
Both the PL121 and PL321 are available as factory installed attachments.
PL121 gives you Asset Watch, which includes the following features:
• Engine hours
• Machine location
P321 gives you all of the features listed for PL121, plus the ability to include Health and Maintenance Watch.
— Health Watch:
• Fuel level
— Maintenance Watch:
• Overdue PM notification
• PM history recording
Due to better filtration, the service interval for the hydraulic return filter has been extended from 1,000 to
2,000 hours. All other maintenance intervals remain the same as found on the 320C.
ACERT Technology
The Caterpillar engine solution to meet the EPA Tier 3 emission regulations. This technology utilizes many
proven components. Testing on competitive solutions has shown that ACERT Technology shows less internal
wear by not introducing exhaust gas into the combustion chamber, which has shown to build up soot,
leading to increased iron wear. The bottom line benefit to the customer is that ACERT Technology, in most
instances, will lead to lower overall owning and operating costs as compared to some of the competitive
Tier 3 emission solutions.
Power Management
This features is accessible through the monitor and is password protected. This feature slows the engine
rpm from 1,980 to 1,800, but retains 100% engine torque. The intended use of this feature is to be used in
light-duty applications where full power is not required, which would potentially reduce fuel consumption.
When “STD HYD POWER” is selected, the green gas tank icon will be visible on the monitor (as shown
above). If this icon is not visible, the machine is in HIGH HYD POWER.
The optional high ambient cooling capability of the 320D is 52° C (125° F), but the cooling fan is now an
electronically controlled viscous clutch fan with a variable speed control that manages fan speed to provide
optimized cooling. Optimum fan speed is based on target engine speed, coolant temperature, hydraulic oil
temperature and actual fan speed. With this system, the fan speed operates at fewer rpm than before, resulting
in less parasitic loss of power or more available power for other functions. This can potentially lead to
lower fuel consumption in lower ambient conditions.
Improved Layout
The 320D features a redesigned cab, now common with the 324-330D. The frequently used switches have
been relocated to the right front wall where access is more convenient and allows the operator to focus on
the task at hand.
Improved Ventilation
Ventilation has been improved from the 320C by placing the air duct near the monitor higher to allow more
airflow to the face of the operator. The airflow from behind the operator now includes circular air vents that
allow the operator to maneuver the flow of air to meet their needs.
New Monitor
The 320D features a new monitor, also common with the 324D-385, which enhances the functionality that
was brought with the 320C. The main screen of the monitor displays the following information:
— Gauges
• Fuel level
— Time
Main Menu
Language Capability
To meet the growing needs of a diverse workforce, the monitor on the 320D has the capability of displaying
one of 27 different languages. This allows operators to understand the display of the machine in their language,
increasing the likelihood that they will understand the messages and take the recommended action.
The 320D has two seat options. The mechanical suspension seat offers good comfort and adjustability. The
new air suspension seat includes a seat heater and provides a new level of comfort, keeping the operator
comfortable all shift long.
Consoles on the 320D have been repositioned to maximize the effective seating area, keeping the operator
more comfortable.
The engine oil filter on the 320D is now accessible at ground level via the pump compartment on the right
side of the machine. The 320C engine oil filter was accessible through the upper frame engine compartment.
Anti-Skid Plating
The anti-skid plating on the D Series has been enhanced to reduce slipping and easier to clean. The former
series anti-skid plating had holes that allowed debris to fall into the compartment below. The new anti-skid
plating is also easier on technicians’ knees and hands.
C6.4 with ACERT™ Technology. ACERT™ Technology works at the point of combustion to optimize

Productivity
The trenching test was conducted by digging a single bucket, with side cutters, wide – 1378 mm (54.25")
trench that was approximately 3.0 m (10'0") deep and 30.5 m (100'0") long. Cycle times were recorded
using a computer program that was specifically designed for productivity tests. Depths of the trenches were
measured at several intervals to ensure accuracy of the trench depths. Fuel was measured using portable
day tanks that were weighed prior to the test, and then weighed upon completion of the test. All results are
based on 60-minute work hours.
The material was a well-compacted mixture of topsoil and clay with a material density of 1100 kg/m3
(2,400 lb/yd3). Machines were alternated after each trenching run to ensure consistency of the field.
The same bucket was used on each machine in order to ensure a fair comparison of machine capability.
In order to give the Komatsu PC200LC-8 maximum performance, the machine was tested with the operator
continually activating the pressure up button.
The same Caterpillar expert operator conducted the tests for each machine run.
6 TEJB9302 Cat 320D L and Komatsu PC200LC-8 Hydraulic Excavators February 2007
Productivity
In this trenching exercise, the 320D L was able to out produce the PC200LC-8 by 21%. Faster cycle times
for the 320D L (approximately 14% quicker) and a better fill factor (+5%) led to this advantage. Overall
fuel efficiency showed a 7% advantage for the 320D L.
The main contributor to the faster cycle times was in the load segment, where the 320D showed a 21%
advantage (7.41 sec vs. 8.97 sec), which is attributable to the higher breakout forces (stick and bucket).
This allowed the 320D L to get through the cut quicker and to get a better load in the bucket.
February 2007 TEJB9302 Cat 320D L and Komatsu PC200LC-8 Hydraulic Excavators 7
Productivity
The truck loading tests were conducted by trenching compacted soil, with a density of 1100 kg/m3 (2,400 lb/yd3),
the width equivalent to the width of the undercarriage, then same level loaded an on-highway dump truck
by swinging 90°. The depth was approximately 3.05 m (10'0"). Each run consisted of each machine loading
6 trucks. Machines were alternated between each run to ensure the consistency of the material between runs.
Cycle times were taken using a computer program specifically designed for truck loading tests. Fuel was

8 TEJB9302 Cat 320D L and Komatsu PC200LC-8 Hydraulic Excavators February 2007
Productivity
The 320D L was able to show an overall 14% productivity advantage in this truck loading test over the
PC200LC-8. The 320D L was able to cycle quicker (approximately 10% faster) and carried 6% more
material. Fuel efficiency for the 320D L reflected a 5% advantage over the PC200LC-8.
As this test also involved trenching in compacted material, the 320D L showed a significant advantage
(14% quicker) in the load segment of the cycle. One of the strategies that Komatsu maintains is to put
smaller diameter rods in their bucket cylinder, which makes it quick without a load, but under load, the
surface space is less than Cat and makes it slower while under a load.

10 TEJB9302 Cat 320D L and Komatsu PC200LC-8 Hydraulic Excavators February 2007
Productivity
In this test, the 320D L was able to demonstrate a 23% productivity advantage due to the faster cycle times
and higher fill factor. The 320D also boasted a 9% fuel efficiency advantage over the PC200LC-8.
Even though the two machines have the same horsepower, and the PC200LC-8 shows more hydraulic flow
capability, one of the main reasons the 320D L is able to demonstrate such an advantage is its greater
breakout forces and better multi-function capability. The 320D L had noticeable cycle time advantages in
the load segment as well as the swing loaded and return to dig, all of which are requiring multi-function
movement.

In this test, each machine was put through the various portions of the cycle, in a single movement, without load.
As the chart above indicates, the overall total times, were slightly faster for the Cat 320D L over the Komatsu
PC200LC-8. As the bucket cylinder rod circumference is 15 mm (0.6") less [255 mm (10") vs. 270 mm
(10.6")] for the PC200LC-8, they are able to move the cylinder quickly. As seen in the trenching tests,
when the machine is under load, the smaller cylinder rod has less effective area, slows down the movement,
and lengthens that portion of the cycle time.

The machines were put through a traveling test, on flat ground in order to measure the speed of each machine
in both the highest setting (rabbit) as well as the lowest setting (turtle).
The chart above reflects that the 320D L in High setting has a 14% speed advantage over the PC200LC-8,
and a 7% advantage in the Low setting.
A major contributor to the overall speed, ability to climb slopes, spot turning, and general performance in
all underfoot conditions is dependent upon the amount of drawbar force of the excavator. The 320D L has
206 kN (46,311 lb) versus the 178 kN (40,120 lb) for the PC200LC-8. This gives the 320D L a 16%
advantage, which is clearly demonstratable.

offers a combined hydraulic kit as optional. With the 320D, four options are available:
• Hammer (single function) circuit – for tools requiring one-way flow, two pumps, such as hammers,
compactors and mowers.
• Thumb (double function) circuit – for tools requiring two-way flow, one pump, such as thumbs, tilt
buckets and non-rotating grapples or shears.
• Tool Control System – Two Options Available. Capable of running tools that require either one-way or
two-way flow, one or two pumps, without the medium pressure circuit. Allows pressures and flows to
be set from and settings to be stored in the monitor, which can include preset Cat Work Tools.
When equipped with medium pressure, the system is capable of running tools that require either one-
way or two-way slow, one or two pumps, and includes the medium pressure circuit for tools that rotate
(grapples, shears, multi processors). Allows for pressures and flows to be set from the monitor and
settings for up to 10 tools to be stored in the monitor.
Main Benefit: The ability to equip your excavator, directly from the factory, according to your customer’s
needs and application requirements. Tool Control offers the customer the most versatility by not only
handling a host of work tools, but saving them time by having the pressure and flows set and stored in the
monitor, getting them back to work quicker.
Komatsu allows for flows to be set through the monitor, but requires manual pressure adjustment, plus
settings are not stored in the monitor for future use. They need to be reset every time tools are changed.

Versatility
The Cat 320D offers a more optional attachments than Komatsu. These attachments can help optimize the
performance and life of the excavator. These options can assist in job-site management, operator comfort
and the overall durability of the machine.
Machine Security System – A theft deterrent that prevents unauthorized use of the excavator. Komatsu
does not offer this feature.
Product Link 321 – Even though Komatsu offers their Komtrax as standard, the total system functionality
is only a fraction of what can be provided by Product Link 321/Equipment Manager. There is more
diagnostic and maintenance management capability with Product Link.
Quick Coupler (Pin Grabber Plus) – Factory Installed Option – specifically designed for Cat excavators.
This coupler allows the customer to change buckets without having to leave the cab.
Cold Weather starting kits – includes 2 additional maintenance free batteries, heavy duty starter motor
cable, and jump start receptacle.
Fine Swing (Standard) – when precise starting and stopping control is required.
High ambient cooling – when equipped with this option, the demand fan senses when additional cooling
is needed and speeds up. When additional cooling is not needed, the fan speed is slower, allowing for power
to be redirected and less fuel consumption.
Lower Windshield Wiper – keeps the lower windshield clear during inclement weather, allowing for better
visibility to the job site.
Vandal guards – protects the customers investment.
Electric Refueling Pump – allows you to spend less time refueling. Refuels at a rate of 100 L/min
(26 gal/min) and is equipped with an automatic shut-off function.

Durability
Durability
Caterpillar incorporates many designs that increase the overall durability of the excavator that many of our
competitors don’t put into their machines. In addition to the design of the structures and the quality of the
steel that Caterpillar uses in their excavators, Caterpillar pays attention to the details that further enhance
the durability of the 320D:
• Robotic Welding – Up to 95% of the structures on the 320D utilize robotic welding, which provides up
to 4 times as much penetration versus manual welding. Increased penetration adds to the overall durability
of the structures.
• Main Cartridge Filter – a encapsulated filter that is located outside of the tank. This design helps keep
debris out of the tank, preserving performance and reliability of the hydraulic system.
• More S•O•SSM Sampling Ports – provides an easy method to obtain oil samples without having to crack
open lines, lessening the possibility of contamination. Sampling ports are located in many keys areas,
providing the ability to pinpoint the exact location of any contamination.
• Case Drain Filter – The oil from the travel and swing motors is filtered before returning to the system,
something Komatsu doesn’t offer.
• Pre-Start Fluid Check – The 320D goes through a check of the critical fluids (Engine Oil, Hydraulic
Oil, Engine Coolant) before the engine is cranked, and warns you if a fluid level is low. This helps to
prevent any damage caused by lack of fluids in the system.
• Industrial Grade Electrical Wiring – The 320D uses this high quality wiring that resists dust, water and
vibration during the entire life of the machine. Plus the navy-type electrical braiding over the wiring is
flame resistant, adding extra protection to the electrical system.
• Circuit Breaker – Provided to protect the electrical system from any power surges, something the
PC200LC-8 does not have on the excavator.
24 TEJB9302 Cat 320D L and Komatsu PC200LC-8 Hydraulic Excavators February 2007
Durability
Boom Foot
The boom foot width (where the end attached to the boom tower) of the 320D is approximately 9% wider
than the PC200LC-8 boom foot. This translates into greater durability because the wider the boom foot,
the greater the area over which it can spread forces that are transmitted through the front linkage.
Another advantage is the overall design of the boom base. The 320D incorporates a tapered design as
compared to the two piece design for the PC200LC-8. Cat’s tapered construction is stronger as it doesn’t
contain any joints and forces are spread over the tapered area. The PC200LC-8 design can result in significant
stress at the point where the boom foot bushing connects to the boom fabrication.
Main benefit: Being able to spread forces over more surface area, this creates less overall stress on the
320D boom. Less stress has the potential to lead to longer life for the 320D boom.

Durability
Stick
Measurements show that the 320D R2.9B1 (9'7") Stick has a cross section area that is more than 17% larger
than the PC200LC-8 Stick – 2.9 m (9'7").
Main Benefit: A large stick cross section is a major contributor to overall stick durability. Another design
benefit is that the 320D uses internal baffling to help strengthen the rigidity, and increases the ability to resist
torsional (twisting) forces.

Serviceability
Serviceability
Caterpillar has designed the 320D with the service technician in mind. Emphasis has been given to placing
service items close together as well as maximizing the amount of service/maintenance items that can be
accessed ground level.
Main Benefit: By providing easy access to service and maintenance components, the likelihood is increased
that the operator/service personnel will perform those required functions.

Service Intervals
The above chart is a comparison of service intervals as outlined in each manufacturer’s Operation and
Maintenance Manual for general applications, and after initial break-in period. Please note that time spent
for each task has not been taken into consideration. That will be done separately in a serviceability audit.

Standard Safety Features
The Caterpillar 320D incorporates many features found as standard into its design that you won’t find on
other manufacturer’s excavators.
• Full Firewall between engine compartment and pump compartment – if there is any problem is the pump
compartment, it stays isolated to that compartment.
• Ground Level Engine Shut off – Shuts off the fuel supply to the engine.
• Rear window – can be used as a secondary escape route and does not require the use of a hammer to break
window. Simply pull the rubber seal around the window (by pulling the provided O-ring).
• Anti-skid plating – provides excellent traction (as compared to other anti-skid plating or sand paper –
which wears over time) when access to the upper frame is required.
• Front windshield is made of laminate glass. This type of glass is considered shatter-proof as compared
to tempered glass, which can shatter upon impact, that other excavator manufacturers utilize on their
machines.
