Astrid S Rosebud 2
Astrid S Rosebud 2
Astrid S Rosebud 2
by Cath Ward
This crescent shaped shawl is knitted in one piece from the centre top down and has a knitted on
border. The main body of the shawl uses a rosebud mesh, while there are more bunches of roses on
the outer edge and a string of roses in the border lace. Astrid ‘helped’ a lot, so this shawl is named
for her.
Requirements:
Circular needles - 2.75mm, 3.00mm, 3.25mm
100g of lace weight yarn. 1 skein of Circus Tonic Handmade Hoshuku Lace 80% extra Fine Merino,
20% Silk (600 metres/100g) in Grey Whistler used here with about 10g left over.

Astrid’s Rosebud Shawl
Instructions:
Cast on 5 stitches with 2.75mm needles and work through Shawl Body chart rows 1- 27.
Repeat rows 20-27 3 times more. With each repeat of these 8 rows you are also adding one repeat of
the motif to each side of your work.
Repeat rows 20-26 once more. Change to 3.00mm needles for row 27. You should have 7 repeats of the
pattern from the centre back down the shawl (7 centre ‘beads’).
Continue repeating rows 20-27 for 3 repeats with 3.00mm needles then switch to 3.25mm needles for 4
more repeats.
Work rows 28 -52 to complete the main body of the shawl. This will give you 15 ‘bunches of roses’
around the edge of the main body of the shawl.
Without breaking the yarn, cast on for the border lace with the string of roses and Vandyke edging.
Complete the shawl with a good blocking and sew ends in.

Border Lace
Note: on the purl rows the 2nd p2tog purls one border stitch together with one shawl body stitch. If you
can work the purl rows with the right side facing you, backwards as it were, then it’s that much easier. It
takes a bit of thought and practise, but it’s worth it.
Also, there is a bit of fudging needed to make the border fit the shawl. Apologies to the purists! There
are 6 stitches too many on the shawl body for the border lace to fit exactly, so these stitches need to be
‘absorbed’. Place six stitch markers evenly around the long edge of the shawl and when you come to
them as you knit the border make that 2nd p2tog actually a p3tog, picking up 2 body shawl stitches
instead of just one.
