Exercises for QUIZ 3

Do all problems, to be submitted during the quiz. I will give the assignments (who and
which to solve) in a separate mail.

1. A random sample of size 70 is taken from a population that has a variance of 49 and
unknown mean µ.
The sample mean is 90.4.
a. What is the point estimate of µ?
b. Construct a 94% confidence interval for µ.

2. A candy company fills a 20-ounce package of Halloween candy with individually

wrapped pieces of candy. The number of pieces of candy per package varies because
the package is sold by weight. The company wants to estimate the number of pieces
per package. Inspectors randomly sample 120 packages of this candy and count the
number of pieces in each package. They find that the sample mean number of pieces
is 18.72.
a) Assuming a population standard deviation of .8735, what is the point estimate of
the number of pieces per package?
b) Construct a 99% confidence interval to estimate the mean number of pieces per
package for the population.

3. A random sample of 15 items is taken, producing a sample mean of 2.364 with a

sample variance of .81. Assume normally distributed and construct a 90% confidence
interval for the population mean µ.

4. Use the information about each of the following samples to compute the confidence
interval to estimate p.

a. n = 44 and ṕ=.51 ; compute a 90% confidence interval.

b. n = 300 and ṕ=.82; compute a 95% confidence interval

5. Use the data given to test the following hypotheses.

H0:µ = 1200 vs Ha: µ> 1200

x́=1215 , n=113 , σ=100 , α =0.10
a. Give the test statistic for this test and compute its value
b. Give the critical region, provide also a drawing.
c. Give your decision (reject Ho or do not reject)
d. Compute the p-value of the test.

6. A random sample of size 20 is taken, resulting in a sample mean of 16.45 and a

sample standard deviation of 3.59. Assume normally distributed and use this
information and α=0.05 to test the following hypotheses.

H0:µ = 16 vs Ha: µ≠16

a. Give the test statistic for this test and compute its value
b. Give the critical region, provide also a drawing.
c. Give your decision (reject Ho or do not reject)

Problems 7 is for submission of all

7. Make a list of 20 people you know. Include men and women, various ages, various
educational levels, and so on. Number the list and then use the random number list in
Table 7.1 to select six people randomly from your list.
a. How representative of the population is the sample?
b. Find the proportion of men in your population and in your sample.
c. How do the proportions compare?
d. Find the proportion of 20-year-olds in your sample and the proportion in the
population. How do they compare?

8. Use the random numbers in Table A.1 of Appendix A to select 10 of the companies
from the 30 companies listed in Table 7.2. Compare the types of companies in your
sample with the types in the population. How representative of the population is your
sample?

9. A city’s telephone book lists 100,000 people. If the telephone book is the frame for a
study, how large would the sample size be if systematic sampling were done on every
200th person?

10. Find the probability in each case.

a. n = 60, µ=75, σ = 8, solve P ¿)
b. n = 39, µ=108, σ = 3.46, solve P ¿.
