Abstract
Software training is one of the requirements to be fulfilled in order to obtain the Bachelor’s
degree in technology. Each student needs to do software training in a recognized company of
their respective domain. The students are compulsory to do training for duration of 2 months
which is intended for their exposure to the software industry. A well planned, properly
executed and evaluated software training helps a lot in developing a professional attitude. It
develops an awareness of software approach to problem solving, based on a broad
understanding of processes. Besides software training build self confidence among students
and let students know the technical knowledge and professionalism.

During industrial training at AUTODESK, most of the theoretical knowledge gained during
the course of studies was put to test. Various efforts and processes involved in designing of
components was studied and understood during the training. In our training, I undertook
courses of AutoCAD and CATIA.

The training gave me good experience from the view of implementing my theoretical
knowledge in practical aspects. It gave me first hand experience of working as an
engineering professional. It helped me in improving my technical, interpersonal and
communication skills, both oral and written. Overall, it is a great experience to have
industrial training in such a reputed firm and I believe that it will help me in building a
successful career.

1.2 History of company

CADD Centre, the world’s largest training network in CAD/CAM/CAE/Project

Management has trained over 1.4 million students in 30 years of its presence. And now its
arrives in bangarapet to train its professionals and students in the latest modules in
engineering design education. To upgrade our skills sets in a range of
CAD/CAM/CAE/PPM software tools and achieve levels of mastery while
complementing our existing engineering skills. Starting around the mid 1970s as
computer aided design systems began to provide more capability than just an ability to

Department of Mechanical Engg. Dr.TTIT, KGF Page 1

Computer Aided Mechanical Drawing 2019-2020

reproduce manual drafting with electronic drafting, the cost for companies to switch to
CAD became apparent. The benefit of CAD systems over manual drafting are the
capabilities one often takes for granted from computer systems today; automated
generation of Bill of Material, auto layout in integrated circuits, interference checking,
and many others. Eventually CAD provided the designer with the ability to perform
engineering calculations. During this transition, calculations were still performed either
by hand or by those individuals that could run computer programs. CAD was a
revolutionary change in the engineering industry, where draftsmen, designers and
engineering roles begin to merge. It did not eliminate departments, as much as It merged
departments and empowered draftsman, designers and engineers. CAD is just another
example of the pervasive effect computers were beginning to have on industry.

1.3 Objectives
 To add skill to the young generation and make them profitable and productive for
the nation.
 CAD enables designers to layout and develop work on screen, print it out and save

About The Department

2.1 Introduction

Software Training in CADD Includes several modules and combination of

packages like AutoCAD, Solid Works, CATIA, PTC Cero, Siemens NX CAD/CAM
etc.

Fig 2.1 Different CAD Software Tool

When we think of Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD), certain

questions arise that we never think of while working on the drawing board. We
do not use the essential drawing board tools: paper, pencil, T-square, compass,
eraser or scale, yet still have to design or make a drawing. When even one of
these tools is missing we know how aggravating it can be. With CADD we don’t
need even one of them. Computer-aided design (CAD) is the use of computer systems
to assist in the creation, modification, analysis, or optimization of a design. CAD software
is used to increase the productivity of the designer, improve the quality of design,
improve communications through documentation, and to create a database for
manufacturing. CAD output is often in the form of electronic files for print, machining, or
other manufacturing operations.

Computer-aided design is used in many fields. Its use in designing electronic

systems is known as electronic design automation, or EDA. In mechanical design it is
known as mechanical design automation (MDA) or computer-aided design (CAD), which
includes the process of creating a technical drawing with the use of computer

Department of Mechanical Engg. Dr.TTIT, KGF Page 3

Computer Aided Mechanical Drawing 2019-2020

software.CAD software for mechanical design, uses either vector-based graphics to depict
the objects of traditional drafting, or may also produce raster graphics showing the overall
appearance of designed objects. However, it involves more than just shapes. As in the
manual drafting of technical and engineering drawings, the output of CAD must convey
information, such as materials, processes, dimensions, and tolerances, according to
application-specific conventions.

CAD may be used to design curves and figures in two-dimensional (2D) space
or curves, surfaces, and solids in three-dimensional (3D) space. CAD is an important
industrial art extensively used in many applications, including automotive, shipbuilding,
and aerospace industries, industrial and architectural design, prosthetics, and many
more.CAD is also widely used to produce computer animation for special effects in
movies, advertising and technical manuals, often called DCC digital content creation.

2.2 USES

Computer-aided design is one of the many tools used by engineers and

designers and is used in many ways depending on the profession of the user and the type
of software in question.

CAD is one part of the whole Digital Product Development (DPD) activity
within the Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) processes, and as such is used together
with other tools, which are either integrated modules or stand-alone products, such as:

 Computer-aided engineering (CAE) and Finite element analysis (FEA).

 Computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) including instructions to Computer
Numerical Control (CNC) machines.
 Photo realistic rendering and Motion Simulation.
 Document management and revision control using Product Data Management
(PDM).

CAD is also used for the accurate creation of photo simulations that are often
required in the preparation of Environmental Impact Reports, in which computer-aided
designs of intended buildings are superimposed into photographs of existing
environments to represent what that locale will be like, where the proposed facilities are

Computer Aided Mechanical Drawing 2019-2020

allowed to be built. Potential blockage of view corridors and shadow studies are also
frequently analyzed through the use of CAD.

CAD has been proven to be useful to engineers as well. Using four properties
which are history, features, parameterization, and high level constraints. The construction
history can be used to look back into the model's personal features and work on the single
area rather than the whole model. Parameters and constraints can be used to determine the
size, shape, and other properties of the different modeling elements. The features in the
CAD system can be used for the variety of tools for measurement such as tensile strength,
yield strength, electrical or electro-magnetic properties. Also its stress, strain, timing or
how the element gets affected in certain temperatures, etc.

3.1 AutoCAD

3.1.1 Introduction to AutoCAD

AutoCAD is the combination of two words Auto + CAD. The word Auto stands
for name of the firms that is Autodesk and CAD is stands for feature of the software that
is Computer Aided Designing or Drafting.

AutoCAD is a commercial software application for 2D and 3D computer-aided

design (CAD) and drafting — available since 1982 as a desktop application and since
2010 as a mobile web- and cloud-based app marketed as AutoCAD 360.

Developed and marketed by Autodesk, Inc., AutoCAD was first released in

December 1982, running on microcomputers with internal graphics controllers.Prior to
the introduction of AutoCAD, most commercial CAD programs ran on mainframe
computers or minicomputers, with each CAD operator (user) working at a separate
graphics terminal.

3.1.16 Dimensioning

You use dimensions on drawings to convey size and specifications. Most

drawings are not complete until you have added dimensions. When dimensioning a
drawing, you need to consider the final output scale of the drawing, the placement of
dimensions, and how the dimensions should appear. In this chapter, you learn how to
create, edit, and manage dimensions in a typical design environment.

Types of dimensioning:-

 Use dimension styles to manage dimensions.

 Create and edit multilayer styles and multilayers.
 Use different commands and methods to edit dimensions.

Department of Mechanical Engg. Dr.TTIT, KGF Page 13

So above mentioned are the features of AutoCAD in 2D. It also offers modeling
in three dimensions. The 3D modules also have many features. First of all a 2D sketch
is formed and then with the help of features present in AutoCAD, it is converted
into a 3D object. This module of 3D modeling is not explained here due to its
complex city.

3.2 Catia

3.2.1 Introduction

Initially CATIA name is an abbreviation for Computer Aided Three-dimensional

Interactive Application .The French Dassault Systems is the parent company and IBM
participates in the software’s and marketing, and catia is invades broad industrial sectors,

Department of Mechanical Engg. Dr.TTIT, KGF Page 16

and has been explained in the previous post position of CATIA between 3d modeling
software programs. CATIA was started in 1977 by French Aircraft Manufacturer Avions
Marcel Dassault System.

Fig 3.2.1 Logo of Catia

CATIA is classified under the following software packages:

 CAD (Computer Aided Design)

 CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing)
 CAE (Computer Aided Engineering)

Version that most of the people works on it now is CATIA V5 or fifth version, which is a
rewriting and revision the code of the fourth edition. For the fifth version, there are
versions from 1 to 20, for example, CATIA V5 R17, it Means CATIA fifth edition
version seventeenth, While years system was adoption in the sixth edition, for example,
CATIA V6 2011 means CATIA sixth edition version of Year 2011.

3.2.2 CATIA Modules

a. Sketcher: This module is responsible for the implementation of two-dimensional
shapes, in preparation for make a three-dimensional command on it.
b. Part Design: This module is responsible for converting two-dimensional graphics to
three dimensional objects which is most famous in Catia and is closely linked with
sketcher module. The part design Module it is considered from most important
modules, that used by the designer to get the additional advantage from cad programs,
which is stereotaxic drawing or three-dimensional drawing.
c. Wireframe and Surface Design: With this module surfaces can be drawing with
zero size and weight and has its uses in the aerospace, automotive, ships and Mold
Design.

Department of Mechanical Engg. Dr.TTIT, KGF Page 17

Computer Aided Mechanical Drawing 2019-2020

d. Generative Sheet Metal Design: This module is responsible of converting two-

dimensional graphics to thin sheets or walls having a particular ratio between
thickness and its radius.
e. Assembly: This module is responsible for assembling the parts previously produced
in Part Design, and it is most important for those who work in the field of machinery
design or design in general, because it is the one who shows the inter-relationships
between the parts of the machine or any mechanical establishment.
f. Drafting: This module is responsible, for converting what you see on the screen to
standard engineering drawings can be traded in the workshop for manufacturing or
save them for documentation.

3.2.3 Toolbars in sketcher

a. Profile Toolbar: The Profile toolbar contains 2D geometry commands. These

geometries range from the very simple (point, rectangle, etc...) to the very complex
(splines, conics, etc...). The Profile toolbar contains many sub-toolbars. Most of
these sub-toolbars contain different options for creating the same geometry. For
example, you can create a simple line, a line defined by two tangent points, or a line
that is perpendicular to a surface. Profile toolbar Reading from left to right, the Profile
toolbar contain the following commands.

b. Constraint toolbar: Constraints can either be dimensional or geometrical.

Dimensional constraints are used to constrain the length of an element, the radius or
diameter of an arc or circle, and the distance or angle between elements. Geometrical
constraints are used to constrain the orientation of one element relative to another.
For example, two elements may be constrained to be perpendicular to each other.
Other common geometrical constraints include parallel, tangent, coincident,
concentric, etc... Reading from left to right:

b. Operation on Shape Geometry: Generally, the surface models are a combination of
various surfaces. You need to join, trim, split, or translate the surfaces to manage
multiple surfaces. CATIA provides a number of such operation tools that can be used
on the surfaces created using the tools discussed earlier in this chapter. Some of these
operations are discussed in the following section.

3.2.7 Assembly Design

This module is responsible for assembling the parts previously produced in
Part Design, and it is most important for those who work in the field of machinery design
or design in general, because it is the one who shows the inter-relationships between the
parts of the machine or any mechanical establishment. Assembly modeling is the process
of creating designs that consist of two or more components assembled together at their
respective work positions. The components are brought together and assembled in
Assembly Design workbench by applying suitable parametric assembly Constraints to
them.

Types of Assembly Design:

In CATIA you can create assembly models by adopting two types of

approaches. The first design approach is the bottom-up approach, and the second one is
the top-down approach. Both these design approaches are discussed below.

1. Bottom-up Assembly: The bottom-up assembly is the most preferred approach for
creating assembly models. In this of approach, the components are created in the Part
Design workbench file. Then the product file is started and all the previously created
components are inserted and placed in it using the tools provided in the Assembly
Design workbench. After inserting each component, constraints are applied to
position them properly in the 3D space with respect to other components.
2. Top-down Assembly: In the top-down assembly design approach, components are
created inside the Assembly Design workbench. Therefore, there is no need to create
separate part files of the components. This design approach is completely different
from the bottom-up design approach. Here you have to start the product file first and
then, one by one, create all components. Note that even though the components are
created inside the product file, they are saved as individual part files and can be
opened separately later.

a. Product Structure Tools Toolbar: This first task shows how to insert new
component, new part and existing component.

Other common geometrical constraints include parallel, tangent, coincident,
concentric, etc... Reading from left to right:

Reflection Notes

4.1 Butterfly Valve Assembly:

A butterfly valve is a valve which can be used for isolating or regulating flow.
The closing mechanism takes the form of a disk. Operation is similar to that of a ball
valve, which allows for quick shut off. Butterfly valves are generally favored because
they are lower in cost to other valve designs as well as being lighter in weight, meaning
less support is required.

A butterfly valve is from a family of valves called quarter-turn valves. The

"butterfly" is a metal disc mounted on a rod. When the valve is closed, the disc is turned
so that it completely blocks off the passageway. When the valve is fully open, the disc is
rotated a quarter turn so that it allows an almost unrestricted passage of the fluid. The
valve may also be opened incrementally to throttle flow.

Butterfly valve consists of following components:

Chapter 5

Conclusion

By accepting CAD software tool, engineers can do the designing work

faster than the conventional drafting, therefore the industry’s overall requirement of
the number of designers get reduces. Thus CAD software tool is able to carry out
the changes in the products faster and bring them into the market faster before the
competition. According to the various survey carried out on increase in productivity
of the industries due to CAD software tool, it has been found that at lower ends
the increase in productivity is in the ratio of 3:1 and in many cases it is 10:1.
This increase in productivity is measured against the conventional designing process
in which most of the calculations are done by manually and drafting is done by
using the drawing boards. There are some cases where the increase in productivity
is in the ratio of 100:1, but this is not the general figure. There are number of
reasons which decide the increase in productivity by using CAD software
compared to using conventional designing process. These reasons are:

1) To make complicated and complex engineering drawing : For highly

complicated and complex drawings the conventional drawing process consumes lots
of time.

2) Detailing required in the drawing: If more details are required, it can be done
much faster with CAD software tool.

3) Repetition of parts in the drawings: There is a feature of saving the repeated

drawings In CAD software and they can be used in other drawing without having
to draw them again.

4) Symmetrical drawing: The symmetry feature in the CAD software helps

drawing symmetrical parts faster.
