ESCALATOR

Services - H.V.A.C
ESCALATOR = Elevator + Scala (Steps)
An escalator is a moving staircase – a conveyer transport .

• Device for carrying people between floors of a

building.
ESCALATOR
• An escalator is a power-driven, continuous moving
stairway designed to transport passengers up and
down short vertical distances.

• Escalators are used around the world to move

pedestrian traffic in places where elevators would be
impractical.
•Nathan Ames, Of Saugus, Massachusetts, US,Invented The First
Escalator In 1859.
•He Called His Invention As A Revolving Stairs

• But In The Patent He Does not Mentioned The Type Of Material

He Would Be Using.
Historical •Jesse Reno Patented The First Endless Conveyor Or Elevator In
background : 1892. He Produced The First Working Escalator, Which He Called
The Inclined Elevator. This Escalator Was Installed Next To The
Old Iron Pier On Coney Island, New York, In 1896.

•The Escalator Was Later Re designed By Charles Seeberger In

1897 Who Created The Name ‘Escalator’ From The Word ‘Scala’,
Which In Latin Means Steps And The Word ‘Elevator’ Which Had
Been Already Invented.
Historical
background :
APPLICATIONS BENEFITS
Principal areas of usage include

• Airports • Capacity to move large numbers of

people .
• Shopping malls
• Departmental stores • Can be placed in the same physical
Applications • Public buildings space as stairs.
• Stadiums • Have no waiting intervals, except
• Arenas during very heavy traffic .
• Hotels
• Transit systems
•The core of an escalator is
a pair of chains, looped
around two pairs of gears &
an electric motor runs it.
•The motor and chain
system are housed inside
the truss, a metal structure
How Escalators extending between two
floors.
Work •As the chains move, the
steps always stay level.
•At the top and bottom of
the escalator, the steps
collapse on each other,
creating a flat platform. This
makes it easier to get on
and off the escalator.

Escalators
FLOOR PLATE OR LANDING PLATFORM
•Flush with the finished floor .
• In front of the escalator shall be a minimum of 1m space.
• The top platform contains the motor assembly and the main
drive gear, while the bottom holds the step return idler
sprockets.
Escalators
TRUSS –
•The truss is a hollow metal structure .
•That bridges the lower and upper landings.
• The ends of the truss are attached to the top and bottom landing
platforms .
Escalators
•Steps - Each step has two sets of
wheels, which roll along two separate
tracks.
•The upper set (the wheels near the
top of the step) are connected
to the rotating chains.
•The other set simply glides,
following behind the first set.
•Each step has a series of grooves in
it, so it will fit together with
the steps behind the tracks.
•Tread shall not be less than 400 mm
•Riser shall not be more than 220 mm
Escalators
Handrail :
•The handrail width not more than 75mm.

Balusters :
• Height 900 mm vertically above the nose
line of the steps.

Deck Board :
• These are used for preventing clothing
from getting caught and other such problems.

INCLINATIONS STANDARDS

• Designed on an incline of 27.3, 30, 35 degrees.

• If the height is more than 6m than incline of 27.3 should be given .
• 30° inclination
Escalators This inclination provides the highest traveling comfort and maximum safety
for the user.
Specifications
• 35° inclination
The 35° escalator is the most efficient solution as it requires less space and can be
implemented more cost-effectively.
•However, this inclination is perceived as too steep if rises exceed 5 m – particularly in
downward travel .

Interrupted arrangement
(one-way traffic)

•While relatively
inconvenient for
the user, for the owner of
the department store it
provides the advantage that
Arrangements due to the spatial
separation of the upward
and downward directions,
customers have to walk past
specially placed
merchandise displays.
Parallel, interrupted
arrangement (two-way traffic)

•This arrangement is
used mainly in department stores
and public transportation buildings
Arrangements with heavy traffic volumes.

•When there are two or more

escalators it should be possible to
reverse the direction of travel
depending on the traffic flow.
Crisscross,
continuous
arrangement
(two-way
traffic) Crisscross, continuous arrangement
(two-way traffic)

•This type of installation is the one used most

frequently as it allows customers to travel quickly
to the upper floors without any waiting time.
Applications
Moving walkways – Travellator

•A slow moving conveyor mechanism

that transports people across a
horizontal or inclined plane over a
short to medium distance.
•Can be used by standing or walking
on them.
•An incline up to a maximum of 15
degree.

•are built in one of two basic styles:

Pallet type — a continuous series
of flat metal plates join together to
form a walkway. Most have a
metal surface.
Moving belt — these are generally
built with mesh metal belts or
rubber walking surfaces over metal
rollers.

• TIE all shoelaces.
• KEEP FEET AWAY
FROM THE SIDE
