INTRODUCTION
Weeds are unwanted plants which
grow in our crop fields and complete
with the useful plants for the
resources. They compete for the
space, light, nutrients and water, and
reduce the crop yield. Many of the
weeds act as alternate host for certain
diseases and thus help in
perpetuation of the diseases. Many
weeds cause allergy and other skin
ailments in human beings and are
thus hazardous to human health.
Weeds can be removed from the fields,
play grounds and lawns either by
mechanical method or chemical
method. In the latter case, certain
chemicals are used to kill the weeds.
The chemical substances which can
destroy weeds are called weedicide.
There are some synthetic auxins such
as 2, 4-(Dichlorophenoxy acetic acid)
interfere with the translocation of
carbohydrates and thus kills the
plants. Dicotyledonous and
monocotyledonous plants respond
differently to different concentrations
of 2, 4-D. Specific concentration of
2, 4-D can destroy broad leaved or
dicotyledonous plants, while the
narrow leaved or monocotyledonous
plants remain unharmed. Therefore,
2, 4-D is commonly used as selective
herbicide to eliminate broad leaved
weeds growing along with narrow
leaved useful plants. Since the
subject has a practical significance,
the same has been selected for the
present project work.
AIM
To Study the Effect of Herbicide on
Lawn Weeds (To compare the effect
of herbicide on monocotyledonous
and dicotyledonous plants).
MATERIALS REQUIRED
2, 4-D, sprayer, beakers, measuring
cylinder, cord, nails, etc.
EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE
Dissolve 10 gm. 2, 4-D in 3 ml of
ethanol. Mix this solution drop by
drop with 100 ml of distilled water.
Select an abandoned lawn in which it
was found weeds growing. Mark out a
square sized area in the lawn by
driving nails into the ground using a
cord.
Spray 2, 4-D solution over the
selected area once in a week.
Observe the marked and treated area
after a few week.
CONCLUSION
2, 4-D has killing effect on broad leaved
plants (dicotyledonous plant) and not on
narrow leaved plants (monocotyledonous
plants).
