Welcome to AWS Solutions Training for Partners: SAP on AWS (Business).

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

In this course, you will learn how to effectively engage customers to position Amazon
Web Services (AWS) for SAP workloads. You will learn how to identify an SAP
opportunity, explain the services offered by AWS for SAP, and articulate the benefits
of running SAP on AWS. Customer engagement models and case studies are used in
the course to enhance your learning experience.
Welcome to Module 1, Introduction to SAP on AWS.
This module covers foundational information about SAP, the benefits and motivators
for choosing an SAP on AWS solution, and the value of the AWS Partner Network, or
APN.
To get started, this section provides an overview of SAP and the benefits of leveraging
SAP solutions to run customer businesses.

Running critical SAP workloads on AWS enables your customers to be more agile,
cost-effective, and secure than in an on-premises environment. AWS provides cloud-
native services that streamline the ability to adopt emerging technologies, enabling
greater innovation and faster time-to-value.

There is a seismic shift within SAP customers to consider operating SAP via cloud
solutions versus buying, maintaining, and operating on-premises systems.

SAP is the market leader in enterprise application software, helping organizations of
all sizes and industries track customer business interactions. SAP is considered the
system of record for manufacturing, finance, procurement, customer orders, billing,
and human resources. Generally, the SAP system is known as enterprise resource
planning (ERP).

You can position SAP on AWS by highlighting some of its accomplishments:

• The company serves over 425,000 customers in more than 180 countries.
• 77% of the world’s transaction revenue touches an SAP system. Based on market
capitalization, they are the world’s third largest independent software vendor, or
ISV.
• SAP customers include 92% of the Forbes Global 2000 companies, 98% of the 100
most-valued brands, and 100% of the Dow Jones top-scoring sustainability
companies.

AWS offers your customers the experience and innovation to run SAP workloads in
the cloud. With more than 50% market share in public cloud solutions, the movement
to cloud presents AWS and our partners with a significant opportunity to help our
customers and grow our businesses.

Increase speed
For instance, AWS helps customers to quickly provision environments, removing the
complexity of infrastructure considerations. Customers can:
• Initiate a large, mission-critical SAP environment in under an hour and start
exploring immediately
• Adjust their AWS environments as data requirements change over time

Innovate faster
By operating SAP in the AWS Cloud, SAP customers can focus their energies on
optimally implementing and using SAP without the distraction of managing the
infrastructure itself. This frees resources, time, and energy to be applied to more

AWS clears the path for customers to innovate faster by:


• Simplifying deployments with a Quick Start that deploys fully functional SAP
systems on the AWS Cloud
• Easily scaling infrastructure resources, allowing customers to add a new cloned
environment, upgrade it to the latest SAP version, and explore new functionality—
all in a highly secure environment
• Offering a number of SAP-certified instances and databases—61 instances and 7
databases as of Q2 in 2019
• Deploying SAP on AWS solutions worldwide and supporting them in more than 20
AWS regions

Reduce cost
Customers pay for only the infrastructure resources that they need and use. Benefits
include:
• Reduced costs for stable, long-term deployments, like production, that can be
locked in for three years
• Resource consumption on an hourly basis for proof-of-concept environments
• Use of current software licenses on the AWS cloud with no additional licensing
fees

Customers in various industry segments across the world are running their SAP
workloads on AWS. Many companies have realized a spectrum of benefits, such as
simplified infrastructure management, improved time-to-market, and reduced costs.
In most cases, an existing solution has been implemented that can address your
customers’ needs.

AWS creates two-way doors, giving customers the ability to experiment with their
environments through proof-of-concept and performance testing.

SAP systems are generally large monolithic applications, where you don’t see a lot of
dynamic activity happening within these environments. Traditional, on-premises
infrastructure has significant hurdles in accelerating the speed in which SAP
customers can innovate. But when infrastructure is no longer a roadblock, you
remove the barriers for experimentation. Instead of a one-way door with a
prescriptive plan, AWS creates a two-way door with the ability for customers to
experiment with their environments through proof-of-concept and performance
testing.

AWS provides infrastructure to run SAP products in typical customer scenarios that
enables different layers of management.

On-premises/managed cloud

In this scenario, customers have been running purchased SAP products on their on-
premises infrastructure for a number of years. Through a lift-and-shift migration, they
can install their own purchased software on AWS—with their own licenses—and
manage and update the products.

• Customers own and manage SAP accounts.

SAP Cloud Platform (SCP)

SAP offers this platform as a solution (PaaS) so that customers can run the same
products as they do in their on-premises infrastructure, but SAP manages the product

installation and maintenance.

• Customers consume products, but SAP owns and manages the SAP account.

SaaS solutions

SAP offers SaaS-based solutions that can only be run in the cloud. These are
subscription-based services that are purchased from SAP and run on AWS.

• SAP owns the account. Customers consume products and are responsible for
configurations.

AWS offers your customers the experience and innovation to run SAP workloads on
the cloud. AWS accomplishes this by drawing upon its long history of supporting SAP
as a customer, which started in 2008. Since then, SAP has been using AWS
infrastructure to support its workloads. Over time, this relationship grew into a strong
partnership, forming in 2011. As a result, it promotes rapid innovation between AWS
and SAP and enables the two companies to mutually support customers in their cloud
journeys.

AWS is closely partnered with SAP to achieve a faster pace of innovation for SAP on

AWS has continually invested in this relationship in three key areas:

• Infrastructure: AWS was the first public cloud platform certified by SAP to run SAP
workloads, and the two companies continue to work together to certify new
infrastructure.

• Partner programs: AWS has worked to build a network of certified SAP Partners
through the AWS Competency Program. SAP Competency Partners help customers
implement, migrate, and manage SAP applications on the AWS Cloud.

• Extend strategy: The Extend strategy focuses in integrating next-generation


technology, such as AI, machine learning, IoT, data lakes, and DevOps, with SAP on

AWS Regions, giving unparalleled opportunities to build SAP extensions.

Get industry-specific journeys and reference architectures

Deploy SAP S/4 HANA on AWS in less than three hours

Customers can provision the technical layer for SAP S/4HANA in less than three hours,
compared with a manual deployment that can take days or even weeks to complete.

18 TB and 24 TB EC2 high-memory bare metal instances (expected in second half of


2019)
Customers will soon have access to 18 TB and 24 TB high-memory bare metal
Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) instances to support even the largest scale-up
SAP S/4HANA deployments. This complements an already broad range of instances
ranging from 244 GB to 12 TB.

Deploy massive scale-out HANA clusters up to 48 TB


Customers can now deploy massive scale-out HANA clusters up to 48 TB for S/4HANA
workloads and up to 100 TB for BW4/HANA and Datamart scenarios.

AWS and SAP have collaborated to certify the AWS platform. It offers the widest
selection, and largest memory size, of SAP-certified, on-demand infrastructure as a
service (IaaS) for SAP HANA.

AWS is the only hyperscale solution that is certified at such large instances without
co-locating hardware.

With AWS, organizations of all sizes can provision the required infrastructure to run
up to a 14-terabyte, scale-out HANA system in less than one hour, compared to
weeks or months with other infrastructure options.

Most customers who choose to implement an SAP on AWS solution fall into one of
three categories: new implementations, convert and upgrade, or migrate.

New implementation
New implementations include customers who want to control their businesses, have
new subsidiaries or business units, or re-implement SAP solutions.

Customer examples:
• An existing SAP customer who has new subsidiaries or business units and wants to
deploy SAP S/4HANA
• An existing SAP customer who wants to re-implement SAP and has chosen SAP
S/4HANA

Convert and upgrade


Convert and upgrade cases include customers who currently run SAP Business Suite
(SAP ECC) or SAP Business Warehouse on non-SAP databases. These customers are

SAP technically current, while using greater functionality.

AWS has APN funding programs that can accelerate your customer engagements.

HANA on X1 Funding Program


The HANA on X1 Funding Program offers POC or migration credits to customers
running SAP HANA on X1. This program is designed to encourage SAP customers to:

• migrate SAP NON-HANA based solutions to HANA on AWS,


• migrate existing SAP HANA-based solutions (S/4 HANA, BW/4 HANA, Business
Suite on HANA, BW on HANA and others), or
• deploy new SAP HANA-based solutions, to AWS by leveraging the X1 instance type.

Partner Opportunity Acceleration Funding Program


This is a funding program that offers POC or migration cash or credits to customers
working with a preferred APN partner.

This program helps accelerate the sales cycles and customer adoption of the Partner's

validate and demonstrate their AWS expertise to earn trust from their customers.

FAST: SAP Rapid Migration Test Program


This is a migration test program for customers who want to test running SAP HANA or
SAP ASE on AWS with lower risk and cost.

FAST helps customers migrate their SAP Solutions on non-SAP databases (Oracle, MS
SQL, DB2, and others) from on-premises infrastructure, or SAP-hosted provider
infrastructure to SAP Solutions on HANA or SAP ASE on AWS.

This module covers the offerings that SAP provides to your customers, as well as how
licensing works for SAP on AWS.
In this section, you will learn about the offerings that SAP provides to your customers.
Let’s begin by examining the current SAP products.

SAP provides a range of software solutions with different consumption models. These
offerings can be categorized into three general groups: ERP, Related Business
Applications, and Analytics; platform as a service (PaaS) solutions; and software as
a service (SaaS) offerings.
A large number of corporations rely on ERP for day-to-day business. Let's take a look
at how these products have evolved over the years. SAP offers a set of core software
that it continues to develop and evolve:

• SAP ERP solution (ECC or Business Suite) and its next generation, S/4HANA
• SAP Business Warehouse (BW) and its next generation, BW/4HANA

Evolution of SAP products


AWS and SAP have worked closely together to ensure these SAP solutions are fully
supported by SAP for production deployment on the AWS Cloud.

ECC 6.0 (2005)


Many customers have implemented SAP ERP (ECC) to meet their enterprise resource
planning needs. This manifested as Business Suite installations on a variety of
databases, such as Oracle, DB2, or SQL Server (AnyDB). This was a main SAP product
(ERP) for multiple years, and you might encounter a variety of modules still in use
including Financials, Procurement, Manufacturing, and Supply Chain.

HANA (2011)
In 2011, SAP offered an in-memory data platform, SAP HANA, that enables customers
to accelerate business processes, deliver more business intelligence, and simplify
their IT environment. This foundation of services removes the burden of maintaining
separate legacy systems and siloed data. Customers can run live testing and make
better business decisions.

BW on HANA (2012)
SAP released BW on HANA as a simpler, faster, and more flexible data warehouse.
This was the first solution to run on HANA and took advantage of the in-memory
capability to provide faster responses without the need to have pre-defined “cubes.”
However, for the majority of cases, customers don’t consider this Mission Critical.

Suite on HANA (2013)


SAP Suite on HANA gives customers access to a set of fully integrated applications,
such as SAP ERP, SAP CRM, SAP SCM, and SAP SRM, that enable them to run core
business operations more efficiently. Disaster Recovery and High Availability are key
component of the architecture to secure business continuity, which is integral to this
product suite.

S/4HANA (2015)
The SAP Business Suite 4 SAP HANA provides a real-time enterprise resource
management suite for digital business. It is built on the advanced in-memory
platform, SAP HANA, and offers a personalized, consumer-grade user experience with
SAP Fiori.

BW/4HANA (2016)
SAP BW/4HANA was released to provide clients a way to collect and connect to any
data, in real time. This next-generation data warehouse is built entirely on the
advanced in-memory platform, SAP HANA. It offers enhanced data modeling and
governance, high-performance solution development, a modern user experience
(UX), and increased flexibility.

Customers can use platform solutions to leverage the latest cloud-native technologies
and benefit from the AWS infrastructure.
SAP has two PaaS solutions: SAP Cloud Platform (SCP) and HANA Enterprise Cloud
(HEC).
SAP Cloud Platform (SCP)
The SAP Cloud Platform, formerly known as the SAP HANA Cloud Platform, is an in-
memory, PaaS product that allows users to create and test HANA-based cloud
applications. It provides an agile PaaS for digital transformation, with comprehensive
application development services and capabilities to build an integrated and
optimized enterprise.

What is it?

What does it do?
Provides a platform for creating and testing HANA-based cloud applications
How does it help?
Helps businesses achieve agility in building an integrated and optimized enterprise
What are the benefits
Accelerates digital transformation without on-premises infrastructure
HANA Enterprise Cloud, or HEC, is a fully scalable and secure private managed cloud
solution provides the full value of SAP HANA in the cloud while accelerating growth
through innovation, driving digital transformation, and rapidly delivering business
outcomes

It provides production availability that spans the entire application and infrastructure
stack, a full menu of functional and technical services, and the control you’d expect
on premise – in one privately managed environment.

HEC is an adaptable, scalable operating model that requires less time and cost to go
live.
SAP offers a variety of SaaS solutions for all business processes, industries, and
company sizes.
SAP SaaS solutions help customers to:
• Rapidly adopt the latest SAP technologies and solutions
• Integrate with other SaaS and on-premises products
• Extend SAP cloud software with third-party apps
• Reduce costs and simplify IT

AWS and SAP have worked closely together to ensure that the SAP solutions here are fully
supported by SAP for production deployment on the AWS Cloud. Some of these applications
run on AWS, such as SAP SuccessFactors and SAP Concur. AWS continues to collaborate with
SAP to transition more SAP SaaS applications to run on AWS.

examine how SAP licensing is handled for SAP on AWS solutions.

Typically, SAP customers have made significant investments into SAP licenses. So, it naturally
follows that licensing is an important issue for customers. Take a closer look at how SAP on
AWS interacts with existing and new SAP licenses.

Bring-Your-Own Software and License


In general, SAP on AWS uses a bring-your-own software (BYOS) and bring-your-own license
(BYOL) model. SAP customers and partners can use their existing SAP licenses on AWS.
