    DESIGN GUIDE FOR BUILDABLE STEEL CONNECTIONS

    Objective

    This circular is to inform the industry on the ‘Design Guide for Buildable Steel
    Connections’, jointly developed by BCA and the Singapore Structural Steel Society (SSSS)
    to provide guidance on buildable bolted and welded connections.

    Background

    2 Steel construction is one of the DfMA1 technologies identified to improve construction


    productivity in the built environment sector. However, one of the areas that may discourage
    the adoption of steel construction to drive productivity is the specification of unproductive and
    costly steel connections. Arising from this feedback, a BCA/SSSS workgroup was formed to
    develop this design guide on buildable steel connections.

    Design Guide for Buildable Steel Connections

    3 The ‘Design Guide for Buildable Steel Connections’ has incorporated inputs from
    industry stakeholders such as consultants, steel fabricators and the academia. The
    connections detailed in this guide are intended to facilitate easy erection of the steel
    structures on site. The guide gives details of welded and bolted connections that cover both

    simple and moment-resisting joints. Design procedures in a guided step-by-step sequence
    are also provided to facilitate the design to Eurocode 3.
