Carnot cycle : an example

Efficiency of a Carnot cycle : first proposition

It is impossible to construct an engine that operates between

two given reservoirs and is more efficient than a reversible
engine operating between the same two reservoirs.

Second proposition

All engines that operate on the Carnot cycle between two

given constant-temperature reservoirs have the same efficiency.

Thermodynamic temperature scale

Efficiency of a Carnot engine doesn’t depend on working

substance :
η = 1 − (Q2 /Q1 ) ⇒ Q1 /Q2 = f (T1 , T2 )

Q1 ψ(T1 )
∴ =
Q2 ψ(T2 )

where ψ(T ) is any function of temperature.

Measurement of thermodynamics temperature

If you take ψ as a linear function & operate the Carnot engine

between temperatures T and triple point temperature :

Q1 T Q1
= ⇒ T = 274.16 K
QTP TTP QTP

Ideal gas temperature scale

Ideal gas equation : PV = nRT ⇒ T1 /T2 = P1 /P2

Assuming T2 as triple point

temperature (273.16 K) :
P1
T1 = 273.16 K
PTP

You can define ideal gas

temperature as :

P
T = 273.16 K lim
PTP →0 PTP

Equivalence of two scales

Thermodynamics scale of temperature :

Q1
T = 274.16 K
QTP

Ideal gas temperature scale :

P
T = 273.16 K lim
PTP →0 PTP

Aren’t you satisfied? Prove the equivalence by yourselves.

Unattainability of Absolute Zero

You can select the form of ψ(T ) in such a way that :

Q1 T1 Q1
= ⇒ T = 274.16 K
Q2 T2 QTP

If a system undergoes a reversible isothermal process without

transferring heat, that temperature is the absolute zero
temperature. At this temperature isothermal & adiabatic
processes become identical.
The efficiency of a Carnot engine becomes :
T2
η =1−
T1
