The Istiʿādhah & The Basmalah

The Istiʿādhah
The Istiʿādhah is the term used to denote the statement in which we seek refuge in Allah
from Shayṭān.
Allah says in the Qurʾā n,

﴾ ‫نا‬ ‫ا‬ ‫﴿ ذا أت ا ان‬

“So when you recite the Qur’an, seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the expelled.” [al-Naḥl: 98]

Istiʿādhah Wordings
There are a number of wordings mentioned in the Sunnah, the most common/famous of
which are three:

‫من الشيطان الرجيم‬ ‫أعوذ‬ .1


‫السميع العليم من الشيطان الرجيم‬ ‫أعوذ‬ .2
‫السميع العليم من الشيطان الرجيم من ﳘزه ونفخه ونفثه‬ ‫أعوذ‬ .3

Bene its of the Istiʿādhah


o Gain Allah’s protection from evil and harm
o Protection from all devils, human and jinn
o It is an act of worship and part of our belief to seek Allah’s protection
o Acknowledging Allah’s greatness and our own weakness
o Purifying our mouth before embarking on reading Allah’s pure words in
the Qur’an
o Puri ies the heart from Shayṭān’s whispers

General Meaning
In the istiʿādhah, we seek Allah’s refuge, help, protection and safety from Shayṭān the
expelled and accursed, and all his armies and helpers, whether human or jinn.

Other Issues Related to the Istiʿādhah


 Should it be read before or after Qurʾā n reading?
o Both opinions are mentioned, but the majority of scholars state before
recitation.
 Is it obligatory to recite the istiʿādhah before reciting the Qurʾā n?

o The majority of scholars hold it to be recommended whilst some scholars
state that it is obligatory.
 Is it only recited at the beginning of a chapter or midway through too?
o It should be recited for both.
 Do we need to recite the istiʿādhah in the prayer?
o It is recommended in the opinion of most scholars.
 If so, is it just in the irst rakʿah or in every rakʿah?
o Both positions have been mentioned by scholars. It comes back to
whether or not the prayer’s recitation is a single reading or multiple
readings.
 Do we recite the istiʿādhah aloud or silently in the prayer and outside of the
prayer?
o Silently in the view of the majority of scholars.

When Else Should the Istiʿādhah be Read?


 Before reading Qur’an
 When Shayṭān whispers to us or tempts us to do evil
 When Shayṭān distracts us in prayer
 At times of anger
 When seeing a nightmare
 When entering the masjid
 When hearing a donkey braying
 When descending into a place
 When entering the bathroom
 In the mornings and evenings
 When waking up suddenly at night
 Protection for children

The Basmalah
The basmalah is the term used to denote the statement in which we being something
with Allah’s names.

General Meaning
I begin with Allah’s name, seeking His help and blessings, the One who shows all His
creation mercy, and especially to the believers.

Is the basmalah a verse of the Qurʾān?


Allah says in the Qurʾā n,

﴾ِ ِ ّ ‫ن و َ ّ ُ ِ ْ ِ ا ّ ِ ا ّ ْ َ ِ ا‬
َ َ َْ ُ ْ ِ ُ ّ ‫﴿ إ‬

“Indeed, it is from Solomon and indeed, it reads, ‘In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful,
the Especially Merciful’.” [al-Naml: 29]

The scholars agree that the basmalah is part of the Qurʾā n in the verse quoted above.
However, they then differ as follows:
1. The basmalah is not a verse of the Qur’an
2. It is a verse of Sūrat al-Fātiḥah only
3. It is a verse of every chapter except Tawbah
4. The basmalah is an independent verse at the beginning of every chapter

What is the ruling of reading the basmalah?


 It is obligatory in the prayer with Sūrat al-Fātiḥah
 It is recommended in the prayer for every chapter recited except Tawbah
 It should not be read in the obligatory prayers

Should the basmalah be read aloud in prayer?


The scholars differed as follows:
 It should follow the prayer depending on whether it is a loud or silent prayer
 It should always be read silently
 A choice between the two

When should the basmalah be read?


 Before reading the Qurʾā n
 Before writing or studying Islamic knowledge
 Before wuḍūʾ
 When entering or leaving the mosque
 When riding
 Before slaughtering
 Before eating and drinking
 When leaving the house
 In the morning and evening adhkār
 Before sleeping
 When experiencing pain
