The Istiʿādhah
The Istiʿādhah is the term used to denote the statement in which we seek refuge in Allah
from Shayṭān.
Allah says in the Qurʾā n,
“So when you recite the Qur’an, seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the expelled.” [al-Naḥl: 98]
Istiʿādhah Wordings
There are a number of wordings mentioned in the Sunnah, the most common/famous of
which are three:
General Meaning
In the istiʿādhah, we seek Allah’s refuge, help, protection and safety from Shayṭān the
expelled and accursed, and all his armies and helpers, whether human or jinn.

o The majority of scholars hold it to be recommended whilst some scholars
state that it is obligatory.
Is it only recited at the beginning of a chapter or midway through too?
o It should be recited for both.
Do we need to recite the istiʿādhah in the prayer?
o It is recommended in the opinion of most scholars.
If so, is it just in the irst rakʿah or in every rakʿah?
o Both positions have been mentioned by scholars. It comes back to
whether or not the prayer’s recitation is a single reading or multiple
readings.
Do we recite the istiʿādhah aloud or silently in the prayer and outside of the
prayer?
o Silently in the view of the majority of scholars.
The Basmalah
The basmalah is the term used to denote the statement in which we being something
with Allah’s names.
General Meaning
I begin with Allah’s name, seeking His help and blessings, the One who shows all His
creation mercy, and especially to the believers.
﴾ِ ِ ّ ن و َ ّ ُ ِ ْ ِ ا ّ ِ ا ّ ْ َ ِ ا
َ َ َْ ُ ْ ِ ُ ّ ﴿ إ

“Indeed, it is from Solomon and indeed, it reads, ‘In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful,
the Especially Merciful’.” [al-Naml: 29]
The scholars agree that the basmalah is part of the Qurʾā n in the verse quoted above.
However, they then differ as follows:
1. The basmalah is not a verse of the Qur’an
2. It is a verse of Sūrat al-Fātiḥah only
3. It is a verse of every chapter except Tawbah
4. The basmalah is an independent verse at the beginning of every chapter
