Challenge: Use the seven step design process to design and build a table and chair set.
Your design must meet all of the following design constraints.
Resource materials- Use your materials, the materials in the engineering room (with
instructor approval), the internet, the Integrated Learning Units, and material you can get
from other sources to develop a solution to your project.
If you find that you need other materials, create a Bill of Material (BOM) and submit it to
your instructor. You may also submit a request to your instructor to change one or more
of the design constraints. This is done to allow you the greatest possible flexibility in
your design.
Deliverables: - You are responsible for creating the following items as part of this
project:
• Working prototype
• Design Portfolio
• PowerPoint Presentation
• T-shirt with the company name or logo
Design Constraints:
Table
- Must have either a design on top etched or have an epoxy resin design
- Must have lighting inside the table/under the top
- Has a layer of finish or paint on it
Chairs
- Tuck discretely into the table
- Are wide enough for the average person to sit in one
- Have a compartment in chair
- 2 functioning chairs
- The chairs tuck into the table so that they are not noticeably separate at a glance
The details of the characteristics of the Working Prototype are described in the constraints
section and the 7 Step Design Process Guide contained in this design brief.
You will find further details about what to include in each of the sections of the design
portfolio in the 7-step design process guide, which follows immediately.
4 Step Design Process Guide: Use the following steps as a guide to do your design
project.
PLAN:
Step 1: Problem Identification – State the above task in your own words
Your task is to research and present to a class a written report about tables. Include in
the following information:
Operation and Application:
What are tables?
How are tables used?
What are the different types of tables?
What kinds of material are used in tables?
History/Current events
What is the history of tables?
How have tables changed over the years?
Impacts
What impact does deforestation have on tables?
What impact has mass production had on tables?
How have tables shaped society?
What impact does the cost of wood have on tables?
DO:
Step 3: Create Possible Solutions – Use the knowledge gained from Step 2 to develop 4
or 5 possible solutions. Each team member should supply at least one solution. Make a
rough sketch of each along with a brief description of how it works. Save each of the
sketches and include them in the team portfolio.
Step 4: Chose the Best Solutions – Choose the solution that best meets the design
specifications. Document your reasons for choosing this particular solution in your team.
CHECK:
Step 5: Construct a Prototype – Construct a prototype using design drawing. Make
notes when or where the prototype varies from the design drawing. Create digital
photographs of the prototype and the team members as they create the prototype. Include
them in your team portfolio. During this time the Power Point will also be designed. The
Power Point should include your digital pictures and a summary of all of your research
and design processes.
ACT:
Step 7: Testing and Evaluation – Once assembled, test the operation of the CO2 car. This
will also be the time for your company presentation. Using your Power Point as your
visual aid, your company will give a 10 minute presentation on your research, design
steps, and final design. Any other pertinent information may also be given during this
presentation. Be sure to include your team name and number in the presentation. Your
company shirt must also be worn during the presentation.
