SYNOPSIS

The concept of corporate social responsibility is related to the above-mentioned philosophy.


Corporate Social Responsibility is a new novation of the Companies Act, 2013. The project is
undertaken to do research and analyze the CSR contributions in the state of Gujarat and to
study their implementation in the daily practice.

Moreover, literature has been researched on the origin and evolution of the concept of CSR.
The project tries to dwell into the various facets of the provision and also comparing its
practical application on the ground.

LITRATURE REVIEW
Literature Review:

Literature review has been done for the time period of four years (2014-2018) to get an
overview of the subject and analyze.

Following are literature review of various research papers from reputed national journals,
PhD thesis, etc. which has been studied for covering various areas of CSR.

1) An Empirical Study of CSR practices in India in changing global scenario and its
impact on companies’ profitability1: CSR is a growing and important part of an
organization’s overall strategy. In this research paper CSR practices at national level as well

as at international level, India and CSR i.e. the development of CSR and benefits of CSR are
studied. The study also focuses on the drivers of CSR i.e. pushing the business towards CSR.

2) Corporate Social Responsibility in India: The Need of the Hour2: This research is used
for the reference to know about the marketing companies in India and their compliance to
social responsibility and ethical practices. The paper is also used why successful companies
in India like Infosys, Wipro, Tata failure to comply with the CSR.

3) An analysis of Corporate Social Responsibility in India3: This research paper focuses


on the policies governing CSR in India and also discusses the cases of CSR initiatives in
Indian firms, apart from this the paper also states the challenges facing CSR in India and
solutions to overcome it and how to accelerate the CSR initiatives in India.

4) A Study on CSR activities in selected companies of Gujarat4: This research paper


focuses on the CSR activities of various companies in Oil and Gas sector and Textile sector
in Gujarat.

5) Company Specific CSR Data5 - The website provides the complete data of the CSR
activity in India. The data was used for the analysis as it was authentic data.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES


The research has been aimed to carry out a detailed and analytical study of the CSR
contributions made by the companies in the state of Gujarat. The objectives of this project
are:
1) To study the contributions of companies in Gujarat between FY 2014-15 to FY 2017-
18.
2) To analyze the contribution of CSR funds in various sectors of development.
3) To conduct sector wise, analyze of the companies contributing to CSR.
4) To analyze the trends in spending of these companies in Gujarat.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS
The research data has been accessed from The Ministry Of Corporate Affairs Gov Of India
data which is made available for public access. The analysis of the data has been subject to
the statutory filings made by the companies.

The data on the website is not updated completely, as during the research we found that the
contribution made in the most developed district, Ahmedabad was entered as 0 (zero) and
hence not true to our belief.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
The research methodology used was empirical method, wherein the researchers have
collected data on CSR fundings made in State of Gujarat, the data being secondary in nature
was used to analyse it as per the objectives of the research. The researchers have also focused
on review of literature to study about the origin, evolution and the provisions incorporated in
the Companies Act, 2013.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS
1) What is the total contribution of CSR funding in Gujarat?
2) Which companies spend more than Rs 50,00,000 (fifty lakhs) for CSR in Gujarat?
3) What is the sectorial spending for CSR by the companies in State of Gujarat?
4) What is the company wise spending of CSR contribution in the state of Gujarat?

Chapter:1: Corporate Social Responsibility in India

The researchers seek to discuss about the origin, idea and philosophy behind the concept of
corporate social responsibility in India. They further seek to discuss about the development of
the concept of the concept with changing times in the corporate scenario and the social and
economic changes and their impact in India. The provisions pertaining to CSR, the thresholds
and the penal provisions have been discussed. Researchers have concluded the Indian aspect
on corporate social responsibility with landmark judgments wherein the principles of law on
CSR have been decided by the courts.

Chapter: 2: CSR contributions in Gujarat


The researchers seek to analyse the data of the CSR contributions in Gujarat on various
parameters. The flooring of donation of the contributions has been decided as contributions
more than Rs 50,00,000 (fifty lakhs) in the financial year. The researchers have analyzed the
spending as per the development areas in the sector of the contributing industries. This
analysis has been carried on for the financial years 2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18.

Chapter: 3: Trend Analysis

This chapter the researcher has analysed the trends of contributions made by the company in
the financial years 2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18. This chapter also tries to bring forth
the findings which were brought by the research exercise. The analysis will be done by
graphical representation on various parameters by way of opie chart, bar graph, line graph
and other pictorial representations of data.

Chapter: 4: Conclusion

The researchers seek to conclude the project by way of representation of findings observed by
the researchers by way of analysis and interpretation of the data collected. The researchers
seek to analyse the total contributions made in Gujarat year on year analysis, the companies
making the most contributions, sectors receiving most contributions, sectors in which the
companies making contribution belong.
