TCE: The Age of Innocence

The Age of Innocence is a 1993 American film adaptation of Edith Wharton's 1920 novel
of the same name, the story takes place during the Gilded Age, portraying New York's
high society.

I chose to do the costume evaluation on the main characters in the movie because they
have a lot of scenes; and therefore lots of costume changes.

Countess Ellen Olenska

This was when she finally arrived in her party. She is dressed in
bright scarlet. The bustle is so much visible in her dress. She is
wearing a corset, in which I have observed has some kind of tail,
gathered to add volume in the bustle skirt. Her skirt is delicately
pleated.

In this scene, she is wearing a tailored dress. The corset is still

present and we can see how well it worked to make the waist
smaller. She is wearing hat too, which is a common accessory during
the 19th century. We can also see the bustle, now without gathers but
a more solid one. Maybe there are padded rolls underneath her skirt.

This scene was when Newland Archer went to get her.

Assuming it was winter because it was snowing, we
can observe that she is wearing much thicker clothes.
The fabric of her dress was fabric but it also has fur in
it. The bustle is still present since it was the main trend
during the period. She also has a hat on her.
Newland Archer

This was when he was asked to find Ellen. We can see that he is
wearing something very similar to what men are commonly using in
formal affairs this present time. He is wearing a sack jacket over his
waistcoat and an undershirt. He also has bow tie.

In here, we can see that he is wearing reefers also known as pea

jacket as his overcoat. He also has a pair of gloves, which is a
common unit of clothing during their period. For his headdress, he
has a black top hat in him.

In this scene, Newland Archer is wearing an Inverness coat, a type

of coat with full sleeves reaching to the wrist. Again, he is wearing a
pair of gloves and a top hat.

The costumes, all in all is accurate for the period. The bustle is very evident for all
women for it was the main trend during the period. For men, I have observed that their
clothes were very similar to each other, especially when they are in parties. The
costumes overall were so good that I think I concentrated more on them than the
characters.
