TITLE
The path to law student well being
II. RATIONALE :
Mental Health is the emotional and spiritual resilience which enables us to enjoy life and to
survive pain, suffering and disappointment. It is a positive sense of well-being and an
underlying belief in our own and other’s dignity and worth.
Mental health has a direct impact on academic success and it is important to cultivate practices that
support emotional well-being. When mental health is overlooked, it can have detrimental effects on the
individual and the community. 1 in 4 adults live with a mental health disorder. 1,100 college students die
by suicide each year and regretfully, suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for students.
Law school is also a completely different academic world than undergrad. Law students have to manage
their nerves with the Socratic Method and public speaking, learn a completely different writing style and
manage the pressure to do well on both your finals and the Bar Exam while trying to maintain
relationships with partners, friends and family.
III. Objective:
Raise awareness about the mental health continuum(law students well-being), reduce stigma associated
with mental illness(erase the stigma of mental health issued and many troubled law students keep to
themselves and refuse to seek help out of fear), promote help seeking behaviors and emotional well-
being practices, and prevent suicide through individual education and outreach events.
With mental issues being widespread in the population, it is extremely important to raise awareness and
support those around us who is/are suffering from mental health problem, and to seek help if one feels
that he or she is suffering from this stigma.
Mental illness does not only mean that a person is crazy (baliw) or has schizoprenia. There are types of
mental illness :
With the aforementioned, this proposal aims to help law students to get through the challenges,
hardships and frustrations they encounter in law school. It cannot be denied that everyone is different
on how to respond to unnecessary circumstances in law school, thus, it is but a social responsibility to
help an individual fight this stigma.
