Origin of Virtue Ethics
It is a philosophy developed by (mainly)
Aristotle and other scholars of ancient Greece.

Also referred to as the aretaic ethics which

came from the Greek word arete which translates as
“excellence” or “virtue”.
ARISTOTLE:
We are what we repeatedly do.
Excellence then is not an act
but a habit.
PLATO:
Virtue is the desire of
things honorable and the
power of attaining them.

ETHICAL
FRAMEWORK
➔ It is described as the quest to understand and live a
life of moral character by following no definite set of
rules and principles.
➔ This character-based approach to morality assumes that we
acquire virtue through practice. By practicing being
honest, brave, just, generous, and so on, a person
develops an honorable and moral character. According to
Aristotle, by honing virtuous habits, people will likely
make the right choice when faced with ethical challenges.
➔ Character is the key to the moral life, for it is from a
virtuous character that a moral conduct and values
naturally arise.
WHAT IS VIRTUE?
● Honesty, courage, compassion, generosity,
fidelity, integrity, fairness, self-control, and
prudence are all examples of virtues.
● Virtues are engrained/habitual dispositions to
act by standards of excellence. Specifically, a
virtue is a positive trait that makes its
possessor a good human being.
● The golden mean between the excess and
deficiency.
ARISTOTLE’S LIST OF MORAL VIRTUES
If we are to follow
Aristotle’s principle,
virtue in itself alone
is not being ethical.
Being virtuous is

● Practical wisdom and virtue should
coexist.

HURSTHOUSE

A virtue such as honesty or generosity is not just

a tendency to do what is honest or generous, nor is
it to be helpfully specified as a “desirable” or
“morally valuable” character trait. It is, indeed a
character trait—that is, a disposition which is
well entrenched in its possessor. It is concerned
with many other actions as well, with emotions and
emotional reactions, choices, values, desires,
perceptions, attitudes, interests, expectations and
sensibilities. To possess a virtue is to be a
certain sort of person with a certain complex
mindset.
