The BMW ZF6HP21/28/34 and AUDI 6HP28 (2006 &up) transmission is based on the ZF6HP26 that has been in
existence since 2002. These transmissions are often referred to as the “2nd Generation” and are used in low and high
torque capacity vehicle applications.
This Transmission features a Torque Converter with Lock-up Clutch, 3 driving clutches referred to as clutch A, B
and E, 2 brake clutches referred to as clutch C and D, a Lepelletier Planetary Gear Train, and internal Transmission
Control module referred to as a Mechatronic Module.
Mechanically, the six forward speeds and reverse are accomplished through the use of what is known as a
Lepelletier planetary gear train, 3 driving clutches and 2 holding brakes as seen in the application chart displayed in
Figure 1.
Electrically and Hydraulically, this gear box is controlled by what is known as "The Mechatronic Module." This
is a combination of a transmission control module and valve body configured as one unit. In other words, the
computer for the transmission is mounted onto the valve body and is submerged in transmission fluid. As a result of
this Mechatronic Module technology, the pass through case connector from the module to the vehicle harness will
basically contain power, ground and CAN Bus network wiring, as well as inputs from the “Tiptronic” Shifter. The
Mechatronic Module controls shift timing and shift feel based on inputs from the Engine Control Module, ABS, and
the Driver Information Module via the CAN. Shift strategy is controlled by the Mechatronic Module based on
shifter input and engine load information received through the CAN bus.
The following pages provide information on the valve body breakdown including check ball function and valve
function for this family of transmissions. Note: the following information is based on an AUDI 6HP28 valve body
that has a manual valve. Some BMW have “E” shift which does not incorporate a manual valve, which changes the
valve body configuration.

Summary
The EDS 1 Solenoid is a Normally Vented pulse width modulated type. When the solenoid is at
Low duty cycle, which is usually indicated on a scan tool at 50mA, the A Clutch is released. When
the duty cycle is increased, the EDS 1 Solenoid connects DR.RED which is Solenoid Modulating
pressure to HV-A and KV-A, stroking the valves partially for a smooth application of the A Clutch.
The illustration above shows that as EDS 1 duty cycle increases KV-A starts to open to apply the A Clutch
and when EDS 1 duty cycle is low, HV-A makes a connection from A Clutch apply to a
balance circuit near the spring side of KV-A which helps control the apply rate of the A Clutch.

The EDS 1 Solenoid is a Normally Vented pulse width modulated type. When the solenoid is at

The EDS 1 Solenoid connects DR.RED which is Solenoid Modulating
pressure to HV-A and KV-A, stroking the valves for a full application of the A Clutch.
The illustration above shows that the EDS 1 duty cycle is high to KV-A to fully apply the A Clutch.
Also note that at high duty cycle HV-A is stroked which blocks the connection from A Clutch apply to a
balance circuit near the spring side of KV-A.

Summary
The EDS1 is at Low duty cycle when at a stop in Drive with the brake on, this is referred to as
decoupling, which means that the A clutch is partially applied to prevent engine rpm from dropping
to low. Notice also in the schematic that KU-KUE-V is providing return cooler oil to the
A Clutch to prevent the clutches from overheating when signaled by the D1 apply circuit (1st Gear).

Summary
The EDS 7 Solenoid is a Normally Applied pulse width modulated type. This solenoid is modulated
based on engine load and is controlled through a varied duty cycle/amperage, to match line pressure
to engine load.
The EDS 7 Solenoid connects DR.RED which is Solenoid Modulating pressure to the spring
side of SYS. DR.-V which is the Pressure Regulator Valve. Note: When the Torque Converter Clutch
is applied, pressure from EDS 7 is connected to the SCHM-V thru WK-V which is connected to
the cooler/lube circuit as shown in the partial schematic above.
