V. INSTRUCTIONAL PHASES

Learning Activities
1. ACTIVATE Present this pictures to the class. Ask what do you say about the pictures?
Brainstorm with their responses.
2. ACQUIRE A. Activity Proper:
The teacher will instruct the pupils to go to their assigned groups and perform the given activity. Safety

SCIENCE 4
ACTIVITY 1
“Can You Complete Me?”
I. OBJECTIVE: Describe how light is reflected or refracted?
II. MATERIALS: small mirror per learner, old colored magazines, craft paper or
Coupon bond, crayons, marker, scissors, activity sheets, books.
III. PROCEDURE:
1. Draw or cut magazines pictures that have symmetry. Cut pictures into halves.
2. Put the mirror next to the half and see its reflection in order to complete the picture.
3. Now draw shapes and designs, cut them in halves and repeat #2.
4. Exchange your drawing with a partner and have fun completing each half of the drawing
using mirrors.
5. Next hold up a printed copy of a text from the book or magazine to your mirror.

Questions:
1. What did you observe when you placed the halves of the cut-outs beside the mirror?
____________________________________________________________
2. What did you observe with the halves of the drawings you and your classmates made,
when you placed them beside the mirror?
____________________________________________________________
3. Can you do this with other drawings or cut-outs that are not symmetrical? Explain your
answer?
____________________________________________________________
4. What will happen when you cut the drawings crosswise instead of lengthwise, and place
them beside a mirror? Will you get a full view of the picture?
_____________________________________________________________

5. What is different about printed text in the mirror, can you read it?
_____________________________________________________________

SCIENCE 4
ACTIVITY 2
“Is it really broken?”
I. OBJECTIVE:
1. Describe how light is reflected or refracted.
2. Compare a refracted and reflected light.
II. MATERIALS: transparent glass, pencil, water
III. PROCEDURE:
1. Half fill the glass with water.
2. Place the pencil in the glass of water. View the pencil, first on top, by placing your face
above the mouth of the glass, then view the pencil at the side. Record your observation for
each position in your notebook.
3. Take out the pencil from the water. Look at it. Feel it. Is it straight or bent?

Questions:
1. Describe the appearance of the pencil when you viewed it from the top?
____________________________________________________________
2. Describe the appearance of the pencil change when you took it out of the glass?
____________________________________________________________
3. Did the appearance of the pencil change when you took out of the glass?
___________________________________________________________
4. What do your observations show about the way light travels through different material?
_____________________________________________________________
A. Presentation of Outputs
1. After the activity, the students will present and explain their outputs by group.
2. The teacher will use the rubrics on Presentation of Outputs (See Attachment).
3.APPLY, PRACTICE, A. Pupils work in pairs. Using the VENN Diagram, let pupils compare the properties of light.
