General Information
Rwandans are some of the friendliest people you will ever meet! They
are very hospitable, do not hesitate to reach out to anyone in case you
may need help. As long as the person understands the language, we are
quite sure that you will get the help you need.
Rwandans have only one local language KINYARWANDA (make sure
you go home knowing some words like Bite to say Hi and Murakoze
to say thank you! but also most people in Kigali speak either English,
French or Swahili.

Time

The time in Rwanda is Central African Time (GMT+2).

Security

25 years after the tragedy of the 1994 genocide against Tutsi, Rwanda
has against all odds managed to reunite and rebuild its politics, security
and economy. We are to date known as one of the safest countries in Af-
rica and the world. You may see soldiers or police officers walking around
in kigali city but that is nothing you have to worry about, you can even
say hi to them.

Cleanness

Rwanda is among the cleanest countries so please remember:

• You can only dispose waste in designated dustbins.
• If you cannot find one nearby, please keep waste until you find one.
• We understand that most of the time you will be sleeping late, and you
have to wake up early for the sessions but please, don’t forget to keep
your room clean.

Smoking

Rwanda has inaugurated a comprehensive public smoking ban since

2013, meaning that it’s illegal to smoke in public places, namely restau-
rants, hotels, bars, public transport, cinemas and indoor public transport
terminals.

03
There will be a designated smoking area at Golden Tulip La palisse Ho-
tel(our venue). It is absolutely forbidden to smoke anywhere else rather
than the smoking area (Rooms, Session Rooms, Social events etc….)

Note: The use of the following smoking products is strictly prohibited by

the government of Rwanda: Shisha(Hookah), Cannabis, cocaine.

We hope that you will never attempt to bring the above mentioned prod-
ucts in Rwanda otherwise you will end up spending your days in jail in-
stead of the General Assembly.

Alcohol

As long as you are above 18 years, you are allowed to drink alcoholic
beverages. However, being drunk in public places is not acceptable and
it is against Rwandan government laws.

We advise all delegates to make sure that they don’t break anything at
the hotel whether you are drunk or not, you will be charged for the repair.

Both alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks will be available at the hotel.
Don’t forget to test a local beer named “Urwagwa” which is made from
fermented banana juice mixed with roasted sorghum flour.

Health
● It happens that some people don’t feel well when they change their
environment, But don’t worry! We will be having a first aid medical team
at the conference venue. Whenever you feel unwell, please inform any oc
member (They will be wearing OC T-shirts).

● If further care is needed, the OC might help you with transport to

and from the hospital, but the delegate will cover the totality of their care
cost. It is for that reason that we highly recommend you to get travel
health insurance otherwise you will cover the cost at 100%.

● In case of emergency or accident directly call Hotline:

912 or 1112

● Rwanda is in the Malaria endemic area, so we recommend taking

prophylaxis of Malaria to people coming from non-endemic areas.

04
General Information
● Maintain strict hand hygiene. Wash your hands often with soap and
water, especially before eating.

● A delegate can choose to take along a supply of pocket size hand

sanitizers (it should contain at least 60%alcohol).

● Eat and drink safely: Ensure that your food and water are from
trusted sources and fruits are thoroughly washed before eating.

● Comfortable clothing: Although the temperature is projected to be

friendly, the temperatures at the meeting venue may vary between 18oC
and 27oC. Please take along comfortable clothing.

● There are several pharmacies nearby the hotel and open mostly
during day hours, with few others working 24/7 on rotation basis.

● We have three referral hospitals in Kigali. Just in case you need

services, you can reach out to them through:

○ King Faisal Hospital: 3938 or +250 788307561

○ Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Kigali/CHUK: +250 788868240
○ Kanombe Military Hospital: +250 788305703

Rwandan Currency

● The Unit of currency is the Rwandan Franc (RWF) that is divided

into 100 centimes.

● Exchange rates are subject to fluctuation. Currently, 1 USD is ap-

proximately equivalent to 930 RWF. 1 EURO is approximately equivalent
1,020.

● If you are not getting time to get to the city center for changing your
money, you can do it right away at the Airport or better at the hotel itself!

05

Banking hours are from 08:00 to 18:00 on weekdays and from 08:00 to
15:00 on Saturdays. Banking amenities are available at all commercial
banks; local and regional banks hold agreement with a variety of credit
card networks.

Most internationally recognized currencies and travelers’ cheques can be

exchanged at commercial banks, hotels and international airports. Major
credit cards are accepted in most hotels, restaurants and shops.

Emergency Services

In case of emergency, please refer to the telephone numbers listed be-

low.
Fire Brigade (Toll Free): 111 or +250 788 311 224
Ambulance (Toll Free): 912
General Assistance: 997

Business and Shopping Hours

Public Offices open from 07:00 to 17:00 while business open from 8:00 to
18:00, Monday to Friday. Opening times on weekends for business range
between 09:00 to 22:00.

Moving

Vehicles circulate on the right side of the road. There is no strict rule of
direction for the sidewalk, people use whichever side. So, if you are from
a country where there are different regulations, better to pay attention
when crossing streets for your safety. There are multiple zebra cross-
ing along the roads, Many of them do not have traffic lights, in this case
when crossing the road make sure you survey both directions that no
cars are coming before crossing. Some places do not have zebra cross-
ing though, Tip: use the said strategy.

06

moving from floor to floor, there are stairs and space reserved for wheel-
chairs that you can use.

08
Environemental Friendly
Rwanda has taken a strategic decision to pursue a green growth ap-
proach to development. How about stepping into Rwanda’s shoes and
making a green GA? Let’s all be responsible in protecting our environ-
ment and be Green Delegates.

Eat green

At the buffet meals, take less to waste less. Did you know that half of buf-
fet foods in hotels worldwide is wasted? We can reduce this at the GA if
everyone fills their plate mindfully, not overestimating their own appetite.

Drink green

the OC will provide reusable bottles to all delegates for the sake of our
ecosystem. Drinkable water dispensers will be available in session rooms
and at the hotel to keep you well hydrated. Buying bottled water will pro-
duce plastic waste and waste your money. Do not drink tap water. You
can use tap water while brushing your teeth, we all do it, but why would
you while you already have safe water in your bottle!

Live green

Consider managing the available water in an integrated and sustainable

manner so as to secure and provide water of adequate quantity and
quality for all social and economic needs of the present and future gener-
ations. Take shorter showers: try to keep it to 5 mins, you will have more
time to enjoy the GA outside your shower, and you will also save 76 liters
of water per every 8 mins reduced from your shower time. Save another
20 liters per day by closing the tap while you brush your teeth. And for
energy’s sake, turn off the lights when you leave a room.

Recycling

Our Venue is one of ecosystem friendly facility. It uses solar panels as

the main source of energy. We urge all delegates that they should have
proper disposal of wastes and we can’t wait to assist you in enhancing
that regulation, there will be a team all around to assist in difficulties.

From the airport, the only stop will be at the venue which is 29km approx-
imately 1hour. The time always depends on the traffic and since that road
is under construction from newly built airport the traffic will be a little bit
congested.

.

15
ON ARRIVAL - Day 0

In case you missed the OC bus.

Rwanda is a safe country and you can travel anywhere at any time.
In case you missed out or don’t feel like waiting for the OC transport, you
can try any of the following options to catch yourself a ride.

on call: 9191

Open your IOS AppStore or Android AppStore and download application

called” VW MOVE” create an account and put the destination and request
a ride, the price ranges from 0.5 Euro per Kilometer. Note this, it only
works within Kigali city center and will not help if you are heading to GA
venue.

options, they can save your life.

Do not be desperate! In case you fill your travel information form, the OC will

17
On Arrival Day 0
REGISTRATION

The information shared in this small section is extremely important to

ensure that everything runs smoothly. We hope that you will use the most
of it.

How registration will go:

1. Registration will open at 11:00 am. There is a storage place for luggage
in the destined building/place at Golden Tulip La Palisse Hotel (main venue
of the GA).

2. All delegates should leave their luggage in the destined place, otherwise
the registration space will be too crowded. If this happens security will
intervene and you will be asking to move your stuff to the destined place,
so just do it right upfront. Our volunteers (in IFMSA MM 2020 OC t-shirts)
will tell you where to put yours.

3. Thus, from the shuttle, you should arrive at the venue and the OC will
show you where to drop your luggage. The luggage will be babysitted by
volunteers very safely. General delegates should hang out in thebackground
yard or tour the venue to see around - but not in the destined place for
luggage.

4. Then, the NMO president or head of delegation (One person per

delegation) should head to the registration site. It is literally in an open
beautiful place so, relax! Moreover, our volunteers will be available to guide
you.

For any details regarding registration, you will surely be helped with lots
of love by Mick, our Head of registration. You can even contact him at

● Debts are to be paid in EUR or RWF. You will have received an

email by Friday February 21st 2020 informing you of the exact and final
amount you need to pay or that we must give you back.

Regional Booth

The NMO representative will then be guided to its REGIONAL BOOTH

where you will receive all your registered delegation name tags. This is
when you will know at which room you are staying.

Post General Assembly
As you plan a Rwanda tour this March to view wildlife and explore the
Rwandan culture.
It is important to consider these tips for your comfort during the Tour.

The PostGA Team has been working tirelessly to prepare a memorable

adventure of your lifetime. Therefore, below we provide you with the
package of essential tips for your Rwanda trip:

An important tip to note is: avoid bright colored clothes for the outdoor
activities and reserve them for the evenings back at the lodge.

Below we have highlighted some of the recommended clothing to

bring on your Rwanda tour:

Long-sleeved tops or comfortable Safari Shirts

In these you will be protected against biting insects especially when on
nature walks in the park. They will also protect you from the thorny tree
branches, piercing vines, as well as nettles.

Trousers
We mainly recommend that you pack jeans especially for hiking or nature
walks considering that their thick layer will protect your legs against pricking
vegetation.

Safari Shorts
We advise that you wear these while back at your lodge or during the day-
time when the sun is up and shining. These however should not be worn
when hiking the volcanoes or taking nature walks considering that your
legs will be exposed. However, remember to apply some insect repellent
when wearing shorts.

Safari Socks
We recommend that you wear either wool or cotton socks as these will
offer great protection for your feet.

A Safari Jacket

A jacket is an essential component on your packing list. Because Rwanda

is generally a cold country, especially in the early morning and evenings.

Post General Assembly
Swimming suits
Majority of the lodges in Rwanda have nice swimming pools so don’t forget
to carry one on your safari in Rwanda

Tour Shoes
Comfortable walking closed shoes are advisable like boots for hiking and
enables you for better navigation in the caves.

Lightweight raincoat
This comes in handy in case because we tend to receive showers of rain,
even during the dry season.

Waterproof Backpack
A backpack is necessary to carry your important documentation to include
passports, because we advise you to carry it with you wherever you go.
It can also be used to carry medication. We recommend a waterproof
backpack or even waist bag in case it rains.
