MOLES/LIMITING REACTANT REVISION PRACTICE PROBLEMS GRADE 8

1.

2. Baking powder contains sodium hydrogencarbonate (NaHCO3). A student carried out an

experiment to determine the percentage of sodium hydrogencarbonate in a sample of
baking powder by reacting the sodium hydrogencarbonate with hydrochloric acid in a flask.
3.15 g of the baking powder was reacted with excess acid. The reduction in mass during the
reaction was recorded as being 1.44 g, which was caused by the release of the carbon
dioxide gas produced in the reaction.
a) Write the equation for the reaction occurring.
b) Calculate the number of moles of carbon dioxide produced in the reaction.
c) Calculate the mass of NaHCO3 in the sample and work out the percentage of sodium
hydrogencarbonate in the baking powder.

3. Indigestion tablets, which contain mainly calcium carbonate as the active ingredient, can
also be used as a calcium supplement. To determine the calcium content in a tablet, a
student dissolved one tablet, weighing 0.800 g, in excess hydrochloric acid. The reaction is
shown below.

2 HCl(aq) + CaCO3(s) → CaCl2(aq) + H2O(l) + CO2(g)

She then filtered the resulting mixture and added excess sodium phosphate to the filtrate in
order to produce a precipitate of calcium phosphate. The reaction is shown below. (Any
calcium present in the final precipitate would have been present in the original tablet.)

3 CaCl2(aq) + 2 Na3PO4(aq) → Ca3(PO4)2(s) + 6 NaCl(aq)

The precipitate was dried and found to have a mass of 0.680 g
a) Calculate the number of moles of calcium phosphate in the precipitate.
b) Calculate the mass of calcium in this precipitate.
c) Calculate the percentage by mass of calcium in the tablet.
