    PASSIVE

    TO BE + V3

    Note :
    1. To be present : is, am, are
    2. To be past : was, were
    3. To be continuous : being
    4. To be perfect : been
    5. To be modal : be

    Example:

    I eat the bread today (eat: present)


    The bread is eaten today (by me)

    She wrote a letter yesterday


    A letter was written yesterday (by her)

    The police caught the thieves last night


    The thieves were caught last night by the police

    Bu Nana is teaching English in the classroom


    English is being taught in the classroom by Bu Nana

    The postman will deliver the mail soon


    The mail will be delivered soon by the postman

    The rector has announced the new dean


    The new dean has been announced by the rector

    Exercises:
    Put the transitive verbs into the passive voice. Do not mention the agent unless it seems
    necessary.

    1. They haven’t stamped the letter.

    2. They didn’t pay me for the work.

    3. He escaped when they were moving him from one prison to another.

    4. She didn’t introduce me to her mother.

    5. A frightful crash wakened me at 4 a.m.

    6. they threw away the rubbish.


    7. A Japanese firm makes these television sets.
