Pile Load Test Method Statement (ULT)

This method statement describes the process for conducting a vertical static pile load test on two bored piles (TP1 and TP2) at a construction site in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. It involves applying incremental loads up to 15,000kN using hydraulic jacks and a reaction system of test beams and concrete blocks totaling 18,530kN. Instrumentation such as pressure gauges will monitor the pile response over time intervals as loads are applied and removed in steps. The test will evaluate the pile capacities and settlement behavior to verify the design assumptions.

3. VERTICAL STATIC PILE LOAD TEST TECHNIQUES

3.1. TEST PURPOSE

The vertical static pile load test will be carried out to verify compressive bearing
capacities and settlement curve of axially loaded piles. This test method is according to
Standard JTJ106-2003 “Technical Code for Testing of Building Foundation Piles”

3.2. DETAILS OF TEST PILE

Description TP1 TP2

Diameter 800mm 800mm
Design load (DL) 3750kN 3750kN

Testing Load (TL) 15,000kN 15,000kN

3.3. TEST INSTRUMENTS AND EQUIPMENT

3.3.1. Apparatus for Applying Load

The apparatus for applying load consists of hydraulic jack operated under a hydraulic
pump with pressure gauge. The following apparatus for applying load will be used in

Page 1 of 8
The Garden Residency
Pile Load Test Method Statement for Working bored piles

the test:

 4 Hydraulic jacks, capacity 500 ton;

 1 Hydraulic pump, maximum pressure 70MPa;
 1 Pressure gauge, measuring range 0-60MPa.
Before testing, the inspection and calibration certificates of the hydraulic jacks and
pressure gauge will be submitted to the Owner and Consultant.

3.3.2. Reaction System

The reaction system contains test beams, loading frames, dead weights. The loading
frame is constructed by a system of cross beams. The following reaction system will be
used (the beam capacities are shown in Appendix B):

 2 reinforce beams with size of H=1.600m x W=0.75m x L=12.00m and weigh of

19T=190kN;
 18 secondary reinforce beams with size of H=0.90m x W=0.30m x L=12.00m and
weigh of 3.5T=35kN;
 02 buttress reinforce beams with size H=0.30m x W=0.30m x L=12.00m
 365 concrete blocks for dead weights. Total loading of reaction system will be
365x48kN + 2x190kN + 18x35kN = 18,530kN.

3.4. INSTALLATION OF INSTRUMENTS AND EQUIPMENT

The installation steps of instruments and equipment are as follows:

Vertical Static Pile Load Test: will be carried out after 28 days of concrete curing and
after Sonic Logging Test and Pile Integrity Test and Pile Dynamic Analysis Test (PDA) if
required.

Before testing, the following works should be prepared:

 Preparation for test site: the test site will be smooth

 Preparation for test pile head: the test pile head will be flat and smooth;

 Mobilization of test equipment to test site: by heavy - duty truck and crane;

 Set up the test equipment: by crane as following steps:

 Foundation treatment: aggregate spreading (as shown in Appendix A).

 Beam installation

 Deadweight loading

Page 2 of 8
The Garden Residency
Pile Load Test Method Statement for Working bored piles

 Hydraulic system and monitoring system installation

Sub-grade (soft soil) settlement avoiding:

 Foundation strengthening (prepared by FGV): aggregate spreading (as shown in

Appendix A). A layer of aggregate (size 4x6) with size of 6mx14mx0.5m to obtain
the larger area under the buttress.

 Adding concrete blocks during loading test: For avoiding to the ground settlement,
150%-200% design load of deadweight will be loaded firstly and the test load will
be applied to 150%-200% of designed load. After that, the deadweight will be
loaded more in corresponding to each increment of test load. The detailed reaction
load (deadweight) is shown in Table Loading schedule.

3.5. TEST PROCEDURE

3.5.1. Loading and Data Recording Procedure

Following each application of an increment of load the load shall be held for not less
than the period shown in Table 1 or until the rate of settlement is less than
0.25mm/30minutes. Each load increment and decrement shall be maintained for the
specified time interval as shown in Table 1.

Record test readings taken before and after the application of each load increment or
decrement. During each load interval, provided that the test pile or pile group has not
failed, record additional readings taken at 0, 1, 2, 5, 10 and 15 min following application
of the load increment, and every 15 min thereafter as needed. After applying the total
load, provided that the test pile or pile group has not failed, record additional readings
taken at 0, 1, 2, 5, 10 and 15, then every 15 min up to 1hrs, then every hour from 1 to 6
hrs, and then every 2 hrs from 6 to 12 hrs as needed

The readings are subsequently imported into a spreadsheet for analysis and reporting.

CALCULATION FOR TEST BEAM CAPACITY
The Garden Residency
Pile Load Test Method Statement for Working bored piles

Load bearing capacity calculation for 01 Test beam (1600x750)mm

Working state of the beam is showed in the below figure.
Point A is the most dangerous when applying the maximum load. In this case, the beam
is a cantilever with span of l/2.
The section to bear bending moment is
checked: State 1 q

12 12 2
= (914,667 + 12,500 + 8,437,500) Mmax A

= 9,364,667 (cm4) l

Anti-bending moment is:

J
W  2 * 9,364,667 / 160  117,058cm 3
h/2
Section at point A checked by the condition Mmax/Wyield. So MmaxW*yield
The steel grade is SS 540 according to JIS 3101-1995 with yield≥390MPa (3,900kG/cm2)
Therefore, the maximum bending moment born by the beam is:
Mmax=W*yield=117,058*3,900=4,565 Tm.

CROSS SECTION OF TEST BEAM

Bc = 750
Hc=100

Hb=
1400 Bb=20
H=1600

Uniform load on the beam q is: q = 8Mmax/l2 = 8*4,565/(12)2 = 254 T/m.

Loading capacity of one beam is P= q*l = 254*12 = 3,044 (T)

Section at point A checked by the condition Mmax/Wyield. So MmaxW*yield

CROSS SECTION OF SUB-BEAM

Bc=300 Hc=28

Hc=844
H=900 Bb=17

Therefore, the maximum bending moment beared by the beam is:

M=W*yield=8,992*3,900=351 Tm.
Uniform load on the beam q is: q = 8Mmax/l2 = 8*351/(12)2 = 19.5 T/m.
Loading capacity of one beam is P= q*l = 15.9*12 = 234 (T)

CROSS SECTION OF SUB-BEAM

Bc=300
Hc=20

Hc=560
H=600 Bb=10

The cross section A = 2*30*2.0+56.0*1.0 = 176 cm2

Therefore, the shear stress in beams under loading is:
=F.O.S*ULT/(4*A) = 1.2*2,050/(4*176)= 349MPa.< yield
